Ivan Cleary’s selection shake-up keeps Wests Tigers players fighting for spots
Nick Campton, The Daily Telegraph
February 22, 2018 1:42pm

THE message from Ivan Cleary is loud and clear — nobody at Wests Tigers is guaranteed a start for Round 1.

Doesn’t matter who you are, how you played last season or anything else — competition, every day on the training paddock, will determine Cleary’s best 17.

Most had all but pencilled Tui Lolohea in as the club’s fullback for the season opener against the Roosters.

Lolohea played some of the best footy of his career since transferring from the Warriors last season and starred for Tonga in the World Cup.

But that doesn’t matter now. The light-stepping 23-year old has been relegated to the reserve grade trial this week behind Corey Thompson.

Similarly, Taane Milne was a revelation for Fiji and was pegged as a definite starter at right centre after joining the club from St George Illawarra.

But instead he’s on the bench, behind Kevin Naiqama and Esan Marsters.

Neither of them are kicking stones and both plan to make it back into the top team, but their demotion illustrates the new ethos Cleary is building at the Tigers.

“Me and Ivan had a good chat and there’s things I need to do, so I get a good chance this week to play reggies,” Lolohea told The Daily Telegraph.

“We don’t really want to make a big deal of it.”

“It’s good to have a lot of pressure around the club. I just want to get an 80 minute performance this week.”

Lolohea had a mixed bag in the trial game against North Queensland last week, making a break with his first touch, but also struggling to field some loose balls, a consequence of his still developing skills as a fullback.

The former Warrior has worked extensively with 2005 premiership winner Brett Hodgson, a new addition to the Tigers coaching staff, in order to improve his mastery of the position.

No spot in the outside backs is certain, especially in the centres, but Milne believes the rivalries will only make the team stronger in the long run.

“Every day at training we’re competing for spots,” Milne said.

Taane Milne scores a try for Wests Tigers during their NRL trial match against the Cowboys.
“Everyone knows it’s going to be a competition and everyone’s working hard.

“Whoever they pick there, we’ve got a lot of confidence in them and we’ve got a lot of depth, so it’s good for the club.”

The Fijian international says a major focus of his pre-season has been adapting to the new defensive systems at the Tigers, particularly with fellow recruit Josh Reynolds.

“It’s a lot different to what I’m used to. I’m improving on that, working together with the coaches and the boys,” he said.

“Getting used to different combinations. We’re a new team and we’re building.”

In other team news, promising hooker Jacob Liddle confirmed he would miss the start of the season as he continued to rehab a shoulder injury.

**Jacob Liddle has been sidelined by a shoulder injury.
While no definite return date has been set, Liddle is confident he’ll be back on the park in the opening stages of the season.\
\
“It’s coming along well, but there’s still a couple of weeks to go. Starting weights on it, haven’t started contact, but it’s feeling really good,” Liddle told The Daily Telegraph.\
\
“It’s a bit grey, but they won’t tell me much. Still have to build it up and make it strong again.”**

We haven't had this much competition for spots in a long time so it's a pleasant change rather than dreading some poor bloke being promoted who you know will struggle.

That can only work in our favour, those he don't perform each week get to play reggies the next week.
We have not had a coach or the players to do this before, so onwards and upwards

Its so good. So refreshing.

Yes people are losing their stuff over it but this has been where i have wanted the club to be since it formed.

Good clubs have depth and options and they dont just pick the same 17 each week regardless of who is busting their gut.

Finally we have a coach rewarding effort.

I was always of the belief that the more successful Clubs use the least amount of players in a season barring injury wit stability in the 17-20 being the key with combinations…the chop and change approach could work..

How tong does a player get..?

Everything looks and feels good before a ball is kicked.

If we get whipped 36-6 in Round 1 thought all these things they are talking about wont mean much.

I hear you about not changing the team, but the good teams dont have to change their team.
I would say 3 weeks is plenty, if Brooks hasn't aimed up after 3 weeks, then back to reggies, same goes for Tui and even Reynolds, or any other player

It's like it was back 30 years ago when you could almost count on one or two changes every week.
I like it - very refreshing.

Great we have depth this year and everyone is accountable.

Cleary appears to be setting himself as a career coach at WT.

Good times ahead

I guess that that will be a combination of a few things like the players form in FG, the form of the backup and who is training well. You see it happen in cricket alot more than league, especially with batsmen.

The pressure will be good and weed out players that cant cope with it and players that think they are entitled to a spot on reputation.

Look at last year we knew who was playing every week if fit, form didn't matter = no pressure. Then look towards the end of the season when some players had pressure on for contracts and they step up.

The closer the season comes the more I think like this.
I don't think we will get pumped, but any type of loss could set off a storm here.

As sick of losing as we are I still think a little bit of patience will go a long way.

True. This is what needs to happen at the Warriors. Drop unperforming players (Half the team) and bring in players willing to give 100%. At least we have started on the road to normality.

There is depth….and then theres the 2nd tier cap

2nd tier cap abolished with squads moving to 30 + Development players..exemptions will still need to be sought if you want to play a player outside your NRL squad..

Each club is required to submit 29 of their official 30-man playing squad to the NRL by March 1\. The final spot in theses rosters can remain free up until June 30.

With Suli departing the squad is at 28, which leaves only a few days to add the 29th player.

When a club is having a successful season and obviously winning games more than losing, coaches will very rarely chop and change a team in form. Hence most clubs who win the premiership only use 22-25 or so in that year, winning is the only thing that breeds stability. If we start the season off well, then the individual positions are the incumbent players' spot to lose, if we lose our first 3 games then change is needed to attempt to stop the rot before our season slips away IMO.

Safe to say we won't see liddle over the opening rounds then..

WT seem to have the slowest-healing humans on Earth. Blokes have returned to footy after quadruple amputations quicker than Liddle has recovered from a crook shoulder…........

And let's not forget Keithy whose sore toe used to sideline him for years at a time.

And Timmy Moltzen who pulled out of games mid-warm up due to getting his monthlies.

WT aka: The Cotton Wool Kids. :deadhorse:

Someone mentioned we can still count siro as we're paying a small part of his wage still.
