Cleary's - "back to the future" prediction ?!

I was interested listening to Pascoe and Cleary's Christmas Message when Cleary told the really tragic Tigers fans to look out for a bit of "back to the future" . He said he couldn't give too much away but he left it at that.

I assume he was talking about game style given the question was surrounding style of play and structures a little bit. This got me thinking was he referring to the 2005 type football of throwing caution to the wind and moving the ball around a lot more? I personally don't think so as I don't think we have the speed or skill in our side this year to pull off that sort of style?!

Maybe we was talking about right back at the start of the merger in 2000, then we had made a heap of new signings, many very experienced heads like we have done this time. We played a hard nosed brand of football and were not turned over by anyone until it all went pear shaped late in the season. This seemed more likely to me although it would be strange to hap back to a season that was ultimately unsuccessful?!

Thats why I thought of 2005 first.

Does anyone have any clues what he was talking about with this "back to the future prediction"

Cleary was referring to the tough as guts Wests sides of the 70's early 80's and the Balmain sides early 90's…most of those sides didn't have the greatest talents but you knew you were in a game when you played them...they played for each other..

Mental toughnes to play the game to the death for 80 regardless of the scoreboard... I feel we started to see that in the backend of last year...
 
I hope it means that the uncompromising style of both Balmain and the magpies will be on show.If we lose a game make the other mob limp of the field sick and sore and never give up.That attitude will win us more matches than we lose,if you look at the make up of the team that style should suit the players we have
 
The ad lib style we play is dead. If you look at our spine, its not one that is going to throw the ball around. Its about time we left that style behind and grow up.

Eddie, looking at our roster there is only one way they can go and that is the old rip and tare. With a real lack of speed and short on the X factor, they have very little choice. Also with so many new faces, it will be all about keeping it simple.

My worry will that style of football work in 2018\. Souths were the last team to win a comp based on muscles and brawn
 
As Geo suggested, a tough-as-nails approach perhaps. We're all aware that Cleary hasn't bought superstars but he has bought some talent and players who compete for the 80 minutes. I think his primary focus is to get the players to buy-in that it's all about the team effort rather than the individual brilliance we have been known for, such as what Marshall and Farah used to bring, and then the likes of Brooks/Moses/Tedesco. Can't pin your hopes on one player to win the game for you…

Thats is about all we can ask for in 2018

Beyond that we need to sign some talent in the needed positions and play with the 2018 intensity

How long till someone tags it Clearyball? Next year will be that up the middle, kick long, mistake free footy. It's what we have to do but some fans won't like it if we arnt winning much.

I think the difference is we have the personnel more suited to play that type of footy

But you are correct if things go pear shaped some will blame Cleary

Yes. Definitely a more rounded side than we've had previously. I look forward to the tough style. And the coach being in control.

Cleary structures will be nothing like Taylor ball.

The problem is it's hard to win games playing that footy and we need to win games. I assume Cleary realises this and we will play some attacking footy as well. I just think it won't be pretty plays but rather hard running with forwards offloading.

I don’t believe in miracles but do think that with improved fitness levels and depth this side has potential to improve on last year results.
We are short of 2-3 classy players …. so losing Woods and Teddy will hurt and slow down our progress.
I am optimistic ...... however the first 5 rounds will really test the team and some on the forum who may have high expectations.

But yes .... going back to the solid hard nailed style that past Balmain/Magpies sides had during their successful seasons ..... should be the approach to take.
 
Interesting post…..it would seem that Cleary has gone for brawn. Especially in our backline so an up the guts style play does seem possible with that cattle.....

but from memory both the sides Cleary coached liked to throw the ball around.
