Clubs fight over the next Benji

TBH i cant see any other club offering him a walk up start in first grade anyway. I dont think he would be a starting half at any club at the moment, probably not even next year unless he goes to the Titans, and that could be a career killer.

At least at the Tigers he knows he is 1 injury away from getting a start and he knows the players and staff.

He may go elsewhere but he won't be walking into any NRL sides. He still has work to do first, here or elsewhere.[/quote

The only club that gives unproven players a walkup starting position , is us.
If he's stays and shows ability, I hope the club at least give him a couple of runs in first grade, as there is one very important that is missing with the kids we have , and that's competition for their spots. It doesn't matter how long they take , or how many crook games they play, or how many tackles they miss
, they know that they'll be there when the next team is read out.
How this club or Coach, can possibly think that this is a healthy position for ANY Young players to be in, is a complete mystery.
Why should these blokes push themselves to go to that extra effort , or make that extra tackle, they will be kept there anyway
They should have to compete for their spots , like everyone else
At the clubs that continually finish ahead of us , That would be the case

Geo dont leave a teaser like that. Is that based on something you know or just ordinary inability to retain all juniors?

You cant keep them all…happens to all Clubs...I'm sure the Dragons wanted to keep Bird,,,,Rorters ..RTS...Raiders Milford and Dugan and so on....

I have heard that Funaki is as good as gone

Who have we "really" let go…
Who have we "really" missed?
The only ones' I can think of are Kane Evans (Inner west Junior) and Adam Reynolds played with us a year - Only as a ring in.
Ryan Hoffman was a lifetime ago, Folau moved, Hayne was always on Parra's coin....
I can't really think of anyone else we missed.
Manly have invested in Jnrs as well - They're starting to come through...
When you have a junior pool as large as ours, You can't not invest in it.

Our problem always has and will continue to be management, And the corporate dollar.
Mayer was a shining light and did some great things in changing the way we were doing things. We need more business bucks... We'll only get them with success.

Jordan Kahu is probably the best example along the same lines. But I don't think he ever played NYC with us. I think the Broncos stole him even though we had a option in our favour to place in NYC from Keebra.

No he never took up his place in the NYC team. He was contracted to us, he requested to be allowed to break contract to remain in Brisbane for family reasons. He signed with Broncos a few days later.

That's a shame considering he is a Balmain junior.

I hope we resign Martin, but its purely greed. Ball players like that are hard to find and I'd hate to see one slip through our fingers!

As good as he is, I'd rather spend that money on a gun 20s centre/backrower and offer them a first grade opportunity.

1, Teddy
2, Naiqama
3, Simona
4, Moses
5, Nofa
6, Martin
7, Brooks
then we just need some guys that can defend!!!!

Great…so we spend the money and time to develop him and get absolutely nothing for it. No player to replace him and no cash to compensate us for the development. What a joke.

The incentives for developing juniors in the NRL are miniscule. Clubs get no discount for re-signing developed or local players. They get no transfer money for moving a player on to another club and no player of equal talent or lower salary as we would if we traded. I really think we've taken the wrong path heavily investing in kids. By the time they're ready, such as Martin, we won't be able to afford them.

Exactly. Can somebody tell me the point of bringing Martin into NYC getting him ready for first grade if the club always had brooks and Moses in mind. They should of just let some other club take him from highscool right? Is this bad management?

What Management?

Yeah so instead let's just have a hopeless 5/8 in the 20s. No need to have a good half to develop centres. In fact let's just throw our toys out of the cot whilst we are there

Um its call a depth chart. Yep lets go with one half back for the next five years with no real backup. Oops there you go Brooks blows his knee out. Oh well no backup.

I find it hard to believe we're not re-signing Salesi Funaki… he's the sort of player we actually need. Prototype for what the Tigers lack and he's a prodigious talent. The kid is going to be a star. Was playing 20s at 17 iirc.

I agree, i reckon dollar for dollar he would be cheap to resign or it would be a bargin buy for any other nrl club because I don't think he will be asking for a lot of overs, but I suppose the tigers don't see that, if he leaves I hope goes to the Broncos or the Storms because they got the best coaches who gives players opportunities and who can bring the best out of players a.k.a Bennett or Bellamy.

A Courier Mail article mentioned that the Cowboys had attempted to obtain Martin a month ago for this year but were blocked by WTs. Obviously with JT nearing the end of his career and Lui not an option, the Cowboys don't have a succession plan.

Why is there such a shortage of quality halves on the market? Gould wrote about establishing a halves school to address the issue! Will a reduction in interchanges address the issue meaning smaller halves will not have fresh rotations of 110kg forwards running at them.

Maybe? While there is similar interchange in junior reps, their is a clear gap between the structures of juniors and NRL. I'm thinking it's more the pathway where this problem lies?

Or… If you have a look at those who do come thru, a lot are from Qld. Is there a problem with how the NSWRL are managing junior development?
