Certainly not zero. If there are roadblocks to buying Wests Tigers, Harry might think to establish a new Western club in the proposed comp. Possibly under the Balmain banner.

I could imagine a financially strong team would be appealing to add.

Anyone who sees this as anything other than Rupert throwing his toys out of the cot because Smith wouldn't let him bend him over the barrel need their head read.

I'm not big on celebrating when someone kicks off, but my oh my will it be a happy day in Rugby League when that decrepit old fart is lowered six feet under.

I agree, I am very much looking forward to the day when News Limited is no needed/ required/or longer allowed to supply money to clubs.

Also NRL should call their bluff, and let them know if they are not happy, then don't compete in 2016\. The game will continue, with or without them.
Then see what happens.

The so called revolution won't happen, therefore HT offer won't make any difference. The NRL will have to come to a better deal for all the clubs, which is a good thing.

Telstra has denied it is considering ending a 17-season partnership with the National Rugby League as its naming rights sponsor.

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp Australia reported that the telco was on the verge of giving up its naming rights sponsorship, which it has held since 2001, and would seek to stay on only as a minor sponsor.

But Telstra, which jointly owns pay-television operator Foxtel with News Corp, told The Australian Financial Review on Monday that the reports were false and that it was in dialogue with the NRL regarding an extension to its current deal.

"Reports that Telstra is looking to not renew our NRL naming rights are untrue," a Telstra spokesperson said. "We are proud of what we have built with the NRL to date and are in negotiations to continue our partnership beyond 2017\. We are unable to comment further as negotiations are ongoing."

An NRL spokesperson welcomed the Telstra statement, saying that while the rugby league governing body would not discuss ongoing sponsorship or broadcast rights negotiations, "Telstra is a long-term and valued partner and we naturally look forward to further discussions with them."

The Financial Review reported last week that Telstra was still interested in negotiating NRL broadcast rights, even after signing a big deal with the AFL earlier in the week.

Telstra group managing director of media and marketing Joe Pollard said the telecommunications giant was still keen on the NRL, which it has digital rights for. "We are still talking to the NRL and are still in negotiations," Ms Pollard said. "We are still interested in a range of sports."

It comes as part of a concerted campaign from the media conglomerate to put pressure on the NRL, following the league's apparent snubbing of News Corp when it negotiated the free-to-air and free streaming broadcast rights with Nine Entertainment Co for $925 million and without Foxtel, which is 50 per cent owned by News Corp.

Previously, the pay-TV, free-to-air and digital rights have been negotiated at the same time. However, it is understood that Nine preferred to come to the table without Foxtel.

My Neville Nobody opinion is there is much more to this than meets the eye,something is bubbling along in the background. Although downplayed by Penrith & the NRL the recent saga where Penrith knocked back an NRL loan because they had to commit to the NRL for the life of the loan(10 Years?) makes interesting reading.

Another 15 or 20 yrs and TV will go the way of the dodo bird. Its becoming more and more obsolete every yr. It won't ever be able to compete with the internet.

Well i wasn't aware that you were actually kicked out and fought your way back.

Yep and didn't get any of the recognition or media hype for beating the league hierarchy twice in the courts as the pride of the league got in later years. There was a saying going around at the time that if Wests could have played their games in the court they would have been premiers. The history of Wests is really a story of the perennial underdog - ripped apart when first st George came in to the comp then again later when Canterbury came in and again when parra were accepted - interestingly the only team to vote to allow parra in was Wests who knew they were going to lose out again.
I don't know much about Balmains history but i'm sure it is every bit as colourful and interesting.

Maybe WT should put out a publication about the history of both teams and how they morphed in to WT - it would be a great read.

Balmain FC owe money to the NRL not the Wests Tigers.
The NRL do not control the Wests Tigers - it is an independent board.

Why would we be one of the 4 left out? Don't understand.

Don't want another competition myself but would love to see Smith / Grant / Goldburg? and Richardson dismissed from the NRL - we maybe able to get ahead then.

We are one the teams left out because when the NRL took over Balmains debt part of the deal was a new registration deal - i'm not sure when our NRL registration runs out but I am sure it is after 2017 which is when the 12 sides regos run out.

This is sounding really silly… Obviously some of these clubs have openly stated they won't renew there invitations to compete in the NRL with further threats of starting a breakaway comp, and now they are ducking and weaving in denial. I don't think for a second this was created by News Ltd, they just saw the leverage and used it. Politis and his NSWRL Boys Club have been threatening this since the formation of the ARLC purely because they lost their power.

I feel with no real threat, these faceless fools have now strengthened the NRL position. One thing is for certain, moving forward the NRL will now tighten there grip within the franchise agreements to protect themselves further.

As was the case in 95, it soon become clear the clubs didnt have the power. The only Real Threat to the NRL are the Players. They are the brands the public want!
