Should be a stat for not even close enough to attempt a tackle.
There is, it's missed tackles. The forum line of you don't get scored a miss if you don't even attempt is false. If a player runs through the line where you are supposed to be it will be recorded as a missed tackled whether you touch them or not.

He had no choice once Madden came on for Douhie. You can really only afford to replace one back.

It must be the topic about a bad performance from a winger because for some reason your name made me think of Steve Mavin a souths winger that got hooked at the SCG in a finals match.
Struggle at times what I did yesterday but then remembered things from years ago 😂
Got to love getting old.

So if a.left winger tackles an attacker midfield thats made a huge line break and saves the try....is then at marker...the attack then spreads quick hands right to the defenders left wing...left defensive winger cant recover and they score in the corner, that left wingers missed a tackle?
Doesnt seem right.

I doubt its true, if a player splits 2 defenders and runs through untouched how do you know which defender was supposed to make the tackle and therefore missed it. You could also argue that Madden should have been more agressive and shut down some of that shape early however he held back and they ran sideways through the space he should have pushed up into, is that a missed tackle? i believe its only missed if there is an attempt made to tackle, then i guess an ineffective tackle is when they allow an offload?

No but whoever was beaten on the outside, assume left centre in this example, gets a missed tackle recorded against them. Even if there was a 10m overlap and the try scorer goes over untouched. Not saying it is necessarily right as such but it is the way they are recorded.
I will note I can only guarantee this how it is recorded by vapor media that does stats for Fox Sports. I believe it is similar for Opta in that they essentially judge who they believe at fault for an untouched line break but not identical recording to Vapor.

Yes, you do make a valid point and I understand what you are saying.

I suppose it comes back to old, "stats don't always tell the full story," and tackle statistics would be no different.

An example I guess would be someone making an ankle tap that puts an attacking player off balance but as a result the attacking player is slowed down to the point that another defender is able to complete the tackle and save what otherwise would have been a match winning try.

Even though the ankle tap was a match winning moment it would still count as a missed tackle even though it led to the game being saved and resulting in a victory.

I would hate to be responsible for compiling game performance statistics as there would certainly be different interpretations applied just as different referees and bunker officials view certain things differently even though we are supposed to be playing under the same set of rules.

Statistics for a particular game can vary slightly from different sporting bodies due to the interpretation put on them by the statistician or statisticians compiling them.
