Coach Benji 👑

Every coach we have had some with "good "assistants re Ben Gardiner Andrew Webster have never won enough games - doesn't mean that they couldn't coach.
Havnt we learned that yet?
What we should be asking is why Melbourne can identify talent in our nursery and develop it and we can't ?
What is the point of investing in areas when other clubs travel to identify players and then pick the best of them. Who was the last forward that we developed who reached anything other than FG?
A coach can only be successful with the resources they have got to work with and the club is the first barrier for every coach that takes it on
All clubs have ex players running water bottles and assisting at training they are the essence of every club.
No one wants success more for this club than Benji if he fails it won't be because of him or his assistants.
We all have our opinions about assistants or not, but this genuinely intrigues me. If it's not because of Benji, who allegedly has shaped the roster since Sheens started his second stint, picks his coaching staff and is neck deep in recruitment, then who would be responsible? I like that Benji has been able to do all that, when you get everything you want it leaves no room for excuses. Where do you reckon we are at currently as a club?

That is the protocol at most clubs. Maguire was accused of surrounding himself of people that weren't a threat - it's rubbish. Penrith took both of our assistant coaches to better systems and now you get people lamenting them. Same as Todd Payten - gets a pass as an 05 player because he has reached a level of success - at a different club?
We are treading water as a club. We have developed _who_ in the past 7 years that has stayed at the club and reached any level of success? We hear about them and then nothing or they emerge somewhere else.Even St George going through a rough patch have transitioned some young forwards that look great prospects.
What is the point of having this enormous junior nursery when other clubs recruitment teams can pick the eyes out of it - and why?

Clubs provide their coaches with the resources to become successful. Benj will suffer the fate of all unsuccessful coaches at this club and I'm not sure where we go after that. We exist on false hope that the next bloke will do better.

we’re a huge chance to beat the dogs.
Our last 2 games were winnable. Our centres let us down both times. One is leaving for a new club and the other is still a teenager. (That was no time for the tap on pass).
Good onya Benji for recognising we desperately need an experienced try scoring centre with strong defensive ability. Sure some resilience is lacking but that can be changed.
Definitely a better chance with critta out

I'm genuinely interested how people come to the conclusion that Benji needs better coaching staff?

Unless you've been a player or a coach and have observed the existing coaching staff doing their 9-5 job, how on earth could you know?

Vibes? ESP? Hidden cameras? Please explain!
Results will tell you enough , Hodgo and Heighno both had zero experience or near zero , Morris had a solid sharks team to walk into , we started off well at full strength and once we got an injury we regressed , that’s on the coaches

I'm starting to have a bit of a problem with Benji Marshall as our coach. I think he likes to be a friend with the "boys" rather than a coach. I've always thought that he needed an experienced coach around him, once again he seems to prefer to have his old mates from the 2005 GF.... helping out.

I would say give him another season, and if that doesn't work he has to go, we know he loves the club, but that doesn't matter if his tenure is not working.
I think most of us are sick of the excuses !
He proved the "mates with the boys" theory wrong the moment he told Luai to leave early.

A full squad at the start of the season. We’ve jumped out of the blocks a dozen times the last 25 years. It’s nothing remarkable. What separates the men from the boys is when Origin hits and the run home. And we fall off the pace every single year. Without fail. Can anyone remember a season we were cooking on the run home? Even if it was a case where we just came up short? When was the last time we played our best footy at the back end of a season? But we played well between round 1 and 10. BFD.
All fair points Benji aside I believe rosters win games. Very few coaches make that much of a difference. We’ve sucked for a long time. Wishful thinking on my part but I see a decent squad forming

I would say he feels Luai backstabbed him signing with the PNG mob and has lost all respect for him. Remember all the shit Luai had been saying about loyalty etc…
Telling him to go early has more than a tinge of vengeance to it.

Since Luai's camp probably leaked before the game and didn't help our prep for it, have lost any respect left for him, pity he can't bugger off right now.

I watch our games

I watch us in thebred zone apparently on attack...no one knows what everyones doing

I watched us concede 80m one set then 90m the next set in defence.on fri

I watched saints go thru us on the 2nd tackle of the game the week before

It looks to me like poor coaching

Could be. There's also been reference that Jarome will be receiving TPA next year for his PNG next year which probably left a bad taste in a few months.

Results maybe? Are you telling me the best possible candidates for those roles are his 05 teammates. Is it just a coincidence?
I have no idea.

I have never coached at NRL level. I have never set KPIs for staff or even have any inkling what they may be. I have never recruited a coach or staff. Nor have I ever followed a coach around for the week to see what they do.

Maybe I am underestimating the wisdom and knowledge of the forum.

Might as well shut the place down then. Weird take.

Hodgson has been coaching for 13 years.
Yeah I wouldn’t be saying it was a triumph.
His winning percentages have never been in the positive and when he was the Wallabies defensive coach, he helped them exit the last World Cup in the group stage with terrible defensive records.
Certainly more qualified than Marshall, but not necessarily an asset.

Someone would need to validate this but this is what AI tells me his results have been

In 2019 and 2020 hull finished 6th..so they went backwards (there could be other factors I'm not aware of)

I think it’s a bit of a return of serve also.
It’s also acknowledgment that out season was done after the dragons loss - and next year probably won’t be better with Luai.

Gets howled down every time..
We have no shape in attack and don’t do anything at pace.
For the last however long, we’ve been watching Twal take a settler mid set in the red zone - now it’s May.
This settler / reset the attack shit comes from Benjis playing days - we haven’t changed it since back then, but we don’t have a Benji to execute it now.
