Coach for 2015

Statement from Grant Mayer regarding Mick Potter

Coach - Mick Potter
Over the past week there has been much speculation about the future of Mick Potter at the Wests Tigers. I’d like to take this opportunity to clarify to our Members and Corporate Partners the Club’s position on this important decision.

First and foremost, I have no desire to enter a public debate on this topic. Opinion and unnamed sources does nothing but jeopardise the team’s focus on making the NRL finals. It's unhelpful and distracting at a time that we all need to be single minded about achieving a well-publicised 2014 goal of making the top eight.

Running concurrent to the push to the finals is the Board’s decision on our coaching structure and Head Coach for 2015\. We’ve had independent input to this process and a number of players and staff have been consulted. The results of this review have highlighted many areas to address and we will do so privately and without public comment. These decisions will not be rushed and will be made with the best interests of Wests Tigers in mind. We understand that people want to know what is happening at the Club but please know that delicate and important decisions like this should not be influenced by any external sources. Our Members and Corporate Partners are most important to us and will continue to receive information from the Club as top priority.

I've never agreed with GM approach, I don't like the way he is open with issues. You don't ever get anything concrete out of him. He usually announces news when the public is to find out, but makes it out as if we're the first to know.
On Potter, reading GM, he's gone, otherwise why would you come out to make a statement if there was nothing to comment about. He hasn't buried speculation, he's just driven the last nail in the coffin. Now that the ball is rolling it will be a lot easier for GM to act faster.
I just hope the next decision is the right one, because GM is slowly becoming bigger than the club. A good CEO is what we really need to turn the place around. Bring Noyce back. GM go away.

Do you think Parramatta is about to chop their coach, we've had similar results in the past to seasons. Our club is becoming a joke. Why would you sack your coach just to sign a no name. The only way they can justify finding and signing another coach is if they sign one of the top 3 or 4 coaches currently in the NRL.

Ok so coach for 2015 options.

1\. Mick Potter…has come in and done all the dirty work, turned the culture upside down and has improved many aspects that have layed a foundation to build on. Lacks people skills and media influence, and appears to struggle gaining players acceptance, but i stress the word "appears". Is he the man to build on his foundation? Does he deserve the chance to finish what he started? I would feel for him if he was sacked considering he did all the hard work while fighting an inherited playing roster, resistance from some players and a horrible injury toll.

2\. Todd Payten....seems to be the players pick and that worries me straight away. Reportably very impressive the way he conducts himself. He would need to be a very strong personality to maintain the tougher culture Potter has created and since he has been around these boys so many years and has come from the Sheens era, i do have doubts he would be tough enough on certain players.

3\. Jason Taylor....this is the interesting one for me. Tactically sound and is itching for another opportunity. Seems to have learnt a lot from some previous personality flaws. Could be a genius coach or could be a nutter.

4.Matt Parish....god no

5.Paul McGregor..one of my all time fave players...but so is Potter. Has done well with Saints, worked under some interesting coaches like David Waite who was very underrated. A gamble but any choice would be a gamble.

6.Kevvie Walters...i have no doubt our attack would improve under Kevvie. Just not sure about the discipline he would bring.

others: Neil Henry, Nathan Brown, Rick Stone.

How can Wests Tigers afford the money which would be needed for a new reputable first grade coach when they are in legal dispute regarding the huge money they currently owe Sheens?

You would think the way he has been treated Potter probable would walk anyway, Payten had a future at the club but could not wait and with his band of white anters has left a real distasteful situation. My call is WHO would want to coach this basket case of little men and there littler agendas.

Maybe the next candidate will coach for the love of the game ????

He was a dead man walking last year remember?

He is a dead man walking this year.

Let us all just settle down and wait and see what happens. The new board will make a difference and a decision on the coach. Not you, me or the media.
