NEW Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter is prepared to pin his faith on a 20-year-old with just five NRL appearances to cure the team's halves conundrum.

Virtually overlooked for first grade despite leading the Tigers NYC feeder team to premiership glory last year, Jacob Miller now has the inside running to partner Benji Marshall in round one.

Having recovered from off-season groin surgery, Miller completed his first full training session yesterday as the Tigers' top-choice scrum base combination was revealed.

One of eight different halves who lined up alongside Marshall last year, Tim Moltzen is set to return to his favoured position of fullback.

After spending most of his career at No.6, experienced recruit Braith Anasta will start at lock.

That leaves Miller with a golden opportunity to prove his wares after the let-down of playing just 40 minutes at NRL level in 2012.

He 's a level-headed kid and he knows he needs to perform," Potter said yesterday.

"He also needs to be allowed to make a few mistakes, because young players will make mistakes. The main thing is that they learn from them and you can cope with that. He'll get a good run."

The coach also indicated Anasta - recently voted into the club's six-man leadership group - would provide direction for Miller, a former Roosters clubmate.

"Braith can provide some guidance for Jacob, his experience around the middle will be great for us," Potter said.

Unable to join ball work at yesterday's first hit-out of 2013 because of a bruised bone in his foot, Anasta agreed the time was ripe for him to shift from the halves.

"I can worry about my own job now and not having to lead the team around," the 30-year-old said.

"I had some success running off Todd Carney in the back row in 2010, and we've got similar players in Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah. They both play off the cuff and that's how I like to play as well.

"In the early and mid part of my career I definitely preferred five-eighth, but all that changed when I moved in 2010\. I would have still been playing back row if Todd (Carney) had stayed at the Roosters. I only went back to five-eighth last year because there was no other option."

Anasta said he was "humbled" to join Aaron Woods, Sean Meaney, Chris Lawrence, Farah and Marshall in the leadership group just three months after his arrival.

The former Roosters skipper conceded his career was in a "comfort zone" at Bondi, where he enjoyed greater control over his training program and workload.

"It's been a bit of a wake-up call for me," Anasta said.

"Without even noticing you take things for granted.

"This is the hardest I've trained in a long, long time.

"Coming here I've had to earn my stripes and the respect of the other players.

"You do what you are told, there's no luxury of picking and choosing."

Sean Meaney in a leadership group?

:wtf

I wonder if its a new development or if he was there last year too. Can't say I could even name the leadership group from 2012.

I actually think its innovative. Having a leadership group across the grades makes sense I reckon.

Tedesco returning through NYC is starting to look more likely if the article is correct. Not necessarily a bad thing, just as long as he isn't overlooked for too long.

Moltzen is a mystery for the future though, just where is he going to fit in to the puzzle once we get Teddy back? He never really showed any promise as a utility or a centre.

Good luck to Milky..looks like Potter is going to give him a real decent go. I could never understand why he was dropped after just one game last year.

Yeah, but Meaney? You have a guy whose played about 10 fg games in 2 or 3 yrs in a leadership group ahead of guys like Galloway, Lote, Fulton and even Ayshford? maybe its because its 2 o'clock in the morning but that makes completely no sense at all

I've got no idea why Meaney is there, I can only imagine that if innovation is the purpose, to have a leadership group across grades, picking Lote/Galloway/Fulton wouldn't make much sense as they aren't going to spend much time in NSW Cup.

The benefit I see is having fringe players accountable to a leadership group of NRL players plus their own NSW Cup captain might just help with unity and discipline right across the club.

I didn't know miller would be starting the year at halfback. To be honest I'm even less clear now about who out of tedesco and machine gun molten will be fullback…

Good luck to the kid this is his big chance to make his mark on the game . Hopefully potter will take millers sheens restraints off him and let him play his own game

I've got this bad feeling Fulton won't be in the starting side ,possibly not even in the starting 17

You going on information Happy, or just a hunch?

Fulton was great for us last year. He lacks size big time, and he can't make metres or bend the line, but he did a stack of work in defense when we needed him. It's one of those strange situations where the better the tigers are going, the less we need him in the team. My assessment therefore is that if he's not in the team, we'll be doing well. Could just be delusional and optimistic thinking

A hunch TBone we can't carry two small forwards and Liam just doesn't seem to be suited playing off the bench

Unless we have unearthed a minder for Benji defensively I just don't know how it will play out

The look for our forward pack just seems unbalanced ,this is the problem with the Anasta signing , we need him but where to play him

We also need Fulton , but we can't play both together at the same time

With Anasta certain to start at lock the best I can see for Fults is a bench spot - The pack would be to small with him in the 2nd row.. BMM /Pettyborne and Blair should be the 2nd rowers with Galloway and Woods in the Engine room. The Bench could look like Fults, BMM/Pettyborne, Bell and one other.

Should never be picked at centre again… People thought Ayshford never got the ball to his outside man, Moltzen was a hundred times worse.

It will be Moltzen & as i've said in another thread the RND 1 squad will not be to much different to the team that played last season barring new signings & players departing of course

Meaney in the leadership is an interesting one. Could have he cemented a wing spot?
