Wests Tigers have commenced our Back to the Juniors (B2J) program as the team prepares itself for the opening round of the 2023 NRL season.
The B2J program is about building strong, meaningful and sustainable connections with the junior rugby league clubs in Wests Tigers catchment areas, namely Sydney’s Inner-West, Sydney’s South-West, and the and the broader Macarthur region.

The pair played a big part in the NRL’s recent Road to Regions development campaign, rubbing shoulders with hundreds youngsters in Tamworth and Gunnedah.

The Road to Regions program targets regional and remote areas of Australia and New Zealand with an objective of supporting and empowering rugby league communities.

The visits include targeted educational programs at schools, visits to junior rugby league clubs, and participation in local community events.

Matamua, who will play for the Magpies this weekend against the Roosters in the NSW Cup, says it was a privilege to be involved with the regional development program.

“Seeing the next generation coming through and to see how happy they are to play footy is a real honour,” he said.

The NSW U19 State of Origin representative also offered some words of advice to those aspiring to reach the game’s top level.

“Always stay committed, there will be times when you are hit by adversity and have tough times but you just need to be resilient, keep remembering your goals and keep pushing forward,” he said.

Vette-Welsh, who combines her playing duties with her role as Wests Tigers Community Engagement Coordinator, says the road trip was a rewarding experience.

“I love being involved in game development activities like this,” said Vette-Welsh.

“It means a lot to the communities in regional areas, and they really got behind it.”

Wests Tigers is delighted to announce that children can gain free entry to the club’s Round 6 home game against Parramatta Eels at Accor Stadium on Monday 10th April.

This special free ticket offer (conditions apply) is one of several initiatives designed to make Wests Tigers ‘Easter Monday Showstopper’ one of the biggest games of the season.

Also included with all valid tickets for this match, will be free return public transport to Olympic Park.

Full terms and conditions here.

The annual clash between Wests Tigers and Parramatta Eels on Easter Monday is always popular, and this year’s event will be no different.

As well as free tickets and free public transport, the club will be handing out 15,000 Wests Tigers flags, creating a sea of colour at Accor Stadium.

The Round 6 match is crucial to both sides with two valuable competition points on offer. It could have extra significance for Wests Tigers prop David Klemmer, who is on track to make his 200th NRL appearance.

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe wants to make this year’s Easter Monday match, bigger and better than ever.

“A great performance against the Eels is what we all want to see, and we want to create the best possible atmosphere.

“Our free ticket offer for children is just one of many initiatives around this event.

“We’ve been working with Accor Stadium and Transport for NSW for some time now putting this package together, and we want thousands of families to come along and be a part of it.

“The whole precinct will be buzzing with the Easter Show next door, providing us with additional opportunities around this event.

This is our chance to show how strong and passionate the support is for Wests Tigers.

That is a good initiative to create atmosphere.
Unfortunately, it is quite likely both teams will be 0 & 5 leading into this game. Hopefully that doesn’t kill the crowd.

Wests Tigers is proud to team up with Juvenile Arthritis Foundation Australia (JAFA) as our club’s Charity Partner for our Round 4 NRL match against Melbourne Storm.

The timing of this partnership falls in line with Australia's first Juvenile Arthritis Week (March 18-24), when JAFA will be actively raising awareness of the struggles facing so many young Australian children who are suffering with juvenile arthritis and childhood rheumatic diseases.

More specifically, the Juvenile Arthritis Foundation Australia (JAFA) is urgently calling for funding to address the inequality in services for Australian children with arthritis and other rheumatic diseases.

Karla Kimber knows only too well about the struggles and the pain facing children who are afflicted with arthritis. She is a mother of an 11-year-old boy who battles daily with the debilitating condition.

“It is so hard for young children, like my son, who are living with this condition,” she said.

As a family we are so grateful for the support provided by JAFA, and we thank Wests Tigers for helping us raise awareness in this space.
Karla Kimber
The JAFA Board has also welcomed the support of Wests Tigers.

“JAFA is delighted that Wests Tigers are shining a light on Juvenile Arthritis, which affects up to 10,000 Australian children but is virtually unrecognised and dramatically underfunded,” said JAFA director, Tanya Dmitronow.

We are extremely grateful that Wests Tigers is helping to raise awareness about this serious medical issue affecting so many Australian children and their families who deserve a better deal. JAFA Director, Tanya Dmitronow
"Wests Tigers' mission statement is 'to enrich the lives of the community’, and by partnering with us to spread JAFA's message, Wests Tigers are certainly living up to that goal."

Aims and objectives of JAFA:

  • Raise awareness of juvenile arthritis (JA) among health professionals, politicians and governments, the education sector, the broader community and potential funders.
  • Lobby governments to provide optimal and accessible health care and support for children with JA and their families and carers.
  • Influence and partner with government and private funders to invest in research into the causes, treatment, care and a possible cure for JA.
More about juvenile arthritis:

  • Juvenile arthritis (JA) is a painful, incurable and inflammatory autoimmune condition affecting the joints and eyes. JA is estimated to affect some 6,000 to 10,000 Australian children aged 0-16 years making it similarly prevalent to childhood diabetes and epilepsy.
  • Eighty percent of children with JA experience daily pain and suffer a high burden of permanent disability, time off school and lost educational opportunities, social and physical marginalisation, isolation and mental ill-health.
  • Twenty percent of children with JA will also have uveitis - an inflammatory eye disease that causes visual impairment, cataracts, glaucoma and eventual blindness if not detected early and treated. JA carries a financial burden to families through additional medical and treatment costs and reduced employment.
International comparison:

  • Australia has a 225% shortfall in specialist services compared with optimal resource levels in other developed countries, leaving children with sub-optimal care.
  • Ten months is the average time from the onset of painful symptoms to diagnosis with some children having already developed irreversible joint damage and loss of vision at diagnosis.
  • 43% of children do not have access to essential multidisciplinary care - specialist medical, nursing, physio and occupational therapy.

The club will hold an open training session for members and fans at Mittagong Sportsground at 10am, coinciding with the launch of the new junior league season in Macarthur and Group 6 regions.

Following training the players and coaching staff will take part in a ‘meet and greet’ session, signing autographs and posing for pics.

Wests Tigers official merchandise will also be available for sale through the Roarstore, there’ll be team poster giveaways, a pass-the-ball zone, and a coffee van serving refreshments.

Come along and meet the team in Mittagong and then ‘show your stripes’ at Campbelltown Sports Stadium for our Round 8 clash against the Sea Eagles on Sunday 23rd April.

Community Manager, Keehan Diamond is expecting strong local support for Monday’s event.

“Using previous events in the south-west and southern highlands as a guide, I think this will also be very popular,” said Diamond.

“Our players were swamped in pre-season at Camden Square, and then also very well received at some of the Christmas Toy Drive visits in Campbelltown and Bowral.

The NSWRL and Wests Group Macarthur have today announced the continuation of a funding deal secured via the ClubGRANTS scheme will benefit more than 7000 participants, 500 teams and 23 clubs in the Macarthur Conference Competition for the 2023 season.

Now into its second season, the $330,000 deal is still the largest financial commitment made to a sporting code by Wests Group Macarthur with the Macarthur Conference Competition covering clubs from Wests Tigers Macarthur Junior Rugby League and Group 6 Juniors, and Group 6 Rugby League.

NSWRL chief executive David Trodden, Wests Group Macarthur Chairman Alan Buxton and Chief Executive Officer Daniel Perkiss, Westpac NSW Blues coach Brad Fittler, and Wests Tigers players including captain Apisai Koroisau were today all present for the announcement at Campbelltown Stadium which included a Junior Rugby League clinic, jersey presentation and photos.

Trodden said he was grateful for the continued support from Wests Group Macarthur for one of the fastest-growing areas of Rugby League.
“Macarthur and Group 6 has always been an important catchment area for the NSWRL and has provided many wonderful stars of our game,” Trodden said.
“This partnership is a significant investment in the grassroots of Rugby League and I thank Wests Group Macarthur Chairman Alan Buxton and his board, and Chief Executive Officer Daniel Perkiss, for their ongoing support.”
Buxton said: “Rugby League has been the beating heart of Wests Group Macarthur since inception in 1974.
“Being able to support the past, present, and future of the game within Macarthur is a privilege we take seriously, and we are pleased to see the local conference continue to grow in 2023.”
The funding package is estimated to save families $30 per participant and will benefit the Macarthur region through initiatives including:
• insurance subsidies for every participant
• rebates for shorts and socks
• referees’ fees covered
• player development and volunteer training programs
• marketing and promotion initiatives
• special events including gala days and finals series
Wests Tigers Junior Rugby League Chairman Daniel Draper said: “The renewal of the Wests Group Macarthur funding is a huge win for Rugby League in the region.

“Last season had many positives and 2023 is certainly looking bigger and better once again thanks to Wests Group Macarthur.
“On behalf of all clubs and participants I can’t thank Wests Group Macarthur enough for their continued support of Rugby League.”
Group 6 Junior Rugby League Chairman Mark Dooner said: “The support Wests Group Macarthur is giving Rugby League is evident in the continued rise of playing numbers across the region leading into the 2023 season.
“The partnership with Wests Group Macarthur plays a huge role in providing support for all competitions from our youngest players all the way through to our successful conference competitions.”
The Liverpool, Macarthur and Southern Highland regions are one of the largest Rugby League nurseries in NSW and has produced star players including Westpac NSW Blues captain James Tedesco (Camden Rams), David Nofoaluma (Campbelltown Warriors), and True Blues Anthony Minichiello (East Valley United) and Ryan Hoffman (Campbelltown Collegians).
The Macarthur Conference Competition, which had its inaugural season in 2022 in line with the NSWRL’s ‘One State’ Strategic Plan to improve competition opportunities and create better pathways for development for participants, will kick off on Saturday 15 April.
