Completion rates mean nothing in the Modern age

Don’t know if anyone here is familiar with these fellows. Watch it every week for a bit of a laugh and some punting tips. Only just recently have they started their “balls deep” segment where their stat man does a deep dive into something different every week. So I’d implore anyone who is curious to fast forward to about 54 minutes in so they can get an idea what I’m on about. if you can’t be bothered to watch here’s a shortened version.

Basically in the last 5-10 years, every team that has won the competition has been outside the top 6 for completion rates, some even as low as the bottom 4 and only 3 teams that have made the grand final have been in the top 6 that year and they’ve lost the grand final each time (Penrith last season, storm in 2019 & 2016). They eventually get to the fact that unless you are the best defensive team going around, you should move the ball more.

Progress later in the segment to hear the current top 5 for completion rates so far this season. They go on to say do you think any of these teams will make the top 8 and will they even win a final. They are in order.
1. Warriors
2. Newcastle
3. Tigers
4. Bulldogs
5. Dragons

I think that list and their answers pretty much speak for themselves and it’s pretty evident to me so far that in a lot of games, we just try get to the end of our sets and we’re ok with that and yet we are a terrible defensive team.

I think it’s because , being able to defend multiple sets is the real key to winning premierships . The good teams have the edges jump out offside , especially inside 20. Forcing the refs to make a decision . The repeat set thing I’ve noticed is a prior to the last 20 mins .

It doesn't surprise me that we're ranked highly for completion rates because we do nothing with the ball. We should have beat the Dragons by 20.

Interesting.
I would of though it’s more an indication that if you have a solid defensive base you can afford to throw the ball around more.

Only 20?

Tigers don't have a strong enough defence to withstand high turnover rates. It's proven they fall in a heap when attempting to withstand multiple sets back to back. So the safety first approach in attack is deployed and we look boring and flat.

The 2nd half against Cows shows they can light it up if needed however I feel they're probably coached not to unless absolutely necessary.

All of the 5 teams mentioned there have generally average at best attacks. Prob for Tigers isn't getting into good areas, it's getting into good areas and wasting countless tackles on settlers then resorting to a bomb and hope approach.

Agree, any in form team would've put saints away.

Results this year depend on opponents it’s the most lop sided competition in years. If you’ve played Panthers, Eels, Storm, Rabbits, Roosters they are almost all losses. We will win games over the next month due to desperation and quality of the competition.

Players know when they are no hope within a game. If these teams turn up it’s unlikely any other teams win.

And we are not even close to being in form

The focus all week would have been defence as we got lapped by manly the week before. I think the boys responded well
