Apparently Dragons, Eels and GC after him...

If he goes Dragons we should nab Frizell...
Eels..Gutho
GC..Brimson/Arrow

The biggest issue with us getting a big name is that they will already be on big dollars. Mattersons on $350-$400k. Frizzell is probably on $700k, a 'swap' wont work unless we throw in the extra dollars which I doubt we can afford. Plus why would we get rid of a fringe Origin player, then pay an extra $350k for a guy on the same level?

GC is the best bet as Arrow and Brimson would still be on less then market value

Frizzel was never leaving,. This story again debunked in one of the papers. Gutherson is a very slow and average footballer so no thanks to him, From the Eells, Ethan Parry and Sivo,

G'day @WT2K: how do you know what you are saying "but won't tell Maguire to his face" to be true?

He was our equal best player along with Luke Brooks. We/I thought of him as Captain material next year... and he certainly didn't put up a disgusting non-display like Moses did before he was basically...sacked.

If a player is 'genuinely' unhappy playing for us, what is the point in keeping him?

Is Maguire the reason he wants out?... Cleary was the coach he came to play under, so maybe there is a personality clash between Matterson and Maguire?

Is $$$ the reason he wants out?...IMO Matterson is worth more than we are reported to be paying him... so maybe Wests Tigers aren't smart enough or professional enough to work out a deal to keep him at our club?

Quite honestly...I can't believe the amount of rubbish that so many of our forumers are saying about him.

Maybe this sort of attitude has spread further than our forum into other parts of the club...and is the reason he doesn't want to be here any longer'?

Let the bloke go in peace...with his dignity intact and Wests Tigers dignity intact as well. That way he may be able to go to his next club and say 'I wasn't happy there, but Yuh know what..."Wests Tigers are a good club".

We all win that way...don't we?

I heard from a Parra supporter that Gutherson is carrying a long term debilatating injury which has slowed his pace significantly. No more expensive crocks for Wests Tigers thank you

@MAGPIES1963 Maybe Wests Tigers aren't smart enough or professional enough to make a deal? Wow. And I can tell you one thing, if Matterson leaves this club before next season, which is looking more and more likely, there is no way no matter what we do that he will be saying to the other players of his new club "Yeah Wests Tigers was a good club". If it was so good, why did he leave? Because of issues with him? There's no way a person in that position would say that.

I am more concerned that when we seem to fall out with players, we seem to leak all their dirty laundry to the press. Suli sleeping in the car instead of training for example. I don't think that strategy helps us.

Or maybe his manager wasn't smart or professional enough to get him a deal that matches his worth?

How do we win if he leaves? That is a loss for us!

@MAGPIES1963 And what message does that send to the next player who decides since the WTs provided him the opportunity and how his manager believes he is worth more? To me it is open season to renege on your contract. The only sensible and logical outcome is for him to find a new club but for his manager to provide the player/s we want in return.

I thought it would just be a case of; he and his manager could go out and find a deal at a club they were interested in but that club would then have to be prepared to deal with Maguire on terms to his satisfaction. No deal, he stays and plays.

What I'd like to know is why we've never scoured the SL again after signing Ellis. Canberra are showing what a goldmine that competition can be. You've just got to look.

Yea it's a bit strange. I'd be putting Gareth on as a scout or something along those lines to keep an eye on the SL talent.

I'd be going after Luke Thompson from St Helens - 24 yrs old - back rower with a good step and plenty of pace. Off contract end of 2020 so can be approached mid season next year.

It sounds complicated doesn't it. I wander if Matterson is doing himself any favors here. If stories of the players asking him what he was doing at Mad Monday are true as well it doesn't sound good.

Yes I think what you say is correct. We should not just let these players break their contracts, we are surely doormats if we or NRL allow this to continue:tired_face:

No - we lose a very good player who was signed for another two years.

Therefore - player wins, new club wins - we lose.

Compensation is an absolute must.

Probably a ton of deals all depending on Ben being medically retired or not...

If Ben is, we will have Matterson's contract AND Ben's salary cap room to absorb a few new players.

Tons riding on the decision I'd imagine...

@Russell my thoughts and I'm assuming many others on this forums thoughts on this issue.

@Russell The club was right to let him negotiate. Give him and his boofhead manager a false sense of hope. Let them do the rounds and find a deal and then play hard ball on compensation. Frustrate the shit out of them so their dream deal is slipping away. He gets nervous and back tracks. Back in training by December 1. BOOM

Just release him if it's to a weaker club. Titans, warriors or NQ.
Anyone else and he stays. Why strengthen the strong?

But @tigeress if the guy really doesn't want to be here for 'whatever' the reason is, forcing him to stay and play Reggies as some have suggested ain't gonna do anyone any good.

We let an un-happy player go and replace him with someone that wants to play for Madge and knows full well all the other conditions re $$$ etc etc etc. results in a much happier player than Matterson will apparently ever be here and a much happier/settled club and Forum :fa-smile-o:

A win-win situation all round

Get off the grass. It's not Hippyville. Business is business and this is a big deal. This bloke is pushing the envelope and deserves nothing but a painful, difficult transition.

No one wants to be paying someone to play reserve grade, but this is about something bigger. It's about accountability of players when they sign with us, it's about starting a stronger culture, it's about a reputation of not being the laughing stock of the NRL. I could go on and on. We need to toughen up rather than giving in all the time. The only way Matterson goes, is if we get someone of equal or better value, otherwise enjoy reserve grade you sook.

Of course you're entitled to your opinion Maggie, but this bloke is dragging us through the mud to get his way, and he's not the first.

The club needs to start being ruthless on these types of players.

If we cannot get a net positive result out of Matterson leaving, I hope Madge says to him that he will play him in reserve grade for the next two years if he is not prepared to play FG for us to the best of his ability and we will torpedo his chances of representative honours and maximising his earnings on his next contract.
