Conversation about Ways to Improve

Hi guys,
I thought I’d start a thread more aimed at on field observations , maybe about an obvious thing we are/arnt doing , or for the coaches out there tactically where we are falling down .
I’ll start with an obvious one . The amount of 6 agains we are giving away .
Some of which really seemed to be at times where there was no clear disadvantage to the attacking teams. It seems the refs have analysed our defence and found something .
We have lost all our games this year due to poor discipline just after half time .

I've seen a poster share our general game stats and their statistical analysis is always good to read - especially in terms of measuring individual and team performance.
Just wondering if that person can share a summarisation of where we are going right, where we're coming up short and particularly how we've come up against the top teams. I know there's nothing missed from a lot of people on here but I'm genuinely interested if it does reflect any overall development from the boys.

The 6 agains in my opinion is not the referees. It’s the inability of all our players to control the ruck in the middle third.
If you go back and watch all of the games we are still losing the forward battle. Our time in territory and the meters gained / conceded is worse then our opposition, probably all except the Broncos.
In the ruck we are hitting hard at first but we aren’t following through with controlled contact and we concede a lot of post contact metres. Once we get the players down we try all the on ground tactics by holding the players down a bit longer, pushing or twisting after the tackles are made.
I get angry watching the ref call 6 again for us when I see the Warriors get away with a bit more time in a similar tackle and in other games you can see we aren’t the only ones pushing a bit of ruck tactics. The Warriors had quite a few in ruck tactics that slowed our play the ball right down but in most cases and the difference between a 6 again and not was that the players were in complete control of each tackle.
One tactic of theirs was not to allow us on our front (standard) but in doing so what they were done my was holding the player back towards their own goal line, in the air about 6inches to a foot and lower them to the ground once their line was set.
It completely took Grant out of the game in terms of running.

Alternatively we aren’t fighting at all for a play the ball or at least we weren’t in the Warriors game.

The Warriors has everyone of our players except for Mikalee on our backs and alternatively we could not put them on our backs.

Dropping the football after repelling numerous six again's have killed us a number of times..

Pressure under fatigue needs to improve..

Can we improve on our short kickoffs or dropouts

I rarely see one where it is successful in a game for us

I find that sometimes when even we make a good offload it seems to surprise us and we look flat.
Maybe concentrate on always being alive in support; never being flat-footed.
This might also promote more effective second-phase play.

Around the 23 min mark is when it goes pear-shaped, that first sub opportunity with tired props and trying to get the momentum up with the new guys.

It’s meant to be constructive criticism , for everyone to talk about what we are seeing .
I like your ideas let’s focus on them .

Second in set completions only behind Penrith - 83 - us 81 and hence we have less handling errors than every other club bar Penrith. Credit where credit is due.
Our run metres and post contact metres are mid table. Conversions worst in the comp
We are performing pretty well in all the key areas.

Yeah , but we were 23/24 at HT and Madge lost it

Completions only mean something if you can mount real pressure with a good kicking game and field position

I think they are saying "what are strategies we can employ to become a better football side", rather than "list the negatives you wish were fixed".

Something like "defending your errors" isn't a method to improve, it's a goal. What is the mechanism by which you get there?

Urgency in defending our try line, including desperation to save tries. You see it from the storm and roosters. When an opposition player comes close to scoring, multiple players rush to try and hold them up or put them over the sideline. E.g., the roosters against the Titans on the weekend when Joseph Manu never gave up and made a ridiculous try saver.

That' s being very dismissive of a positive. Not sure that any team can be consistent without good completions.

With the exception of the Warriors and Titans games we are playing as well as our roster is.
We are a mid table side at best 8th position at worst 12th. Nothing will change unless the roster changes. I’m not sure there is much more in this squad.

Perhaps not dropping the ball whilst we were attacking the line like Marshall did would also be something to work on. The team were under the pump for the next quarter of an hour or so defending our line and we couldn't get back in the game. Pretty sure they scored a few against us at that point.

Player in support... no one in the top 50.

This is one obvious flaw in our game, never seem to have anyone pushing up with the play.
