The only difference between this and any other flu is there’s no flu shot , so we all just have to rely on our immune systems
Respectfully, that's not correct. This virus is many times more infectious than the flu which is why it has already reached pandemic status.
You only need to see the total country lockdowns, travel bans, America declaring a state of emergency and the global financial markets collapsing to understand this is far more than just a flu.
The predictions of the experts are concerning. Do the maths: 20% of the population will likely get the disease - that's 5 million Australians. 20% of those will need hospital treatment - that's 1 million people (we only have 140,000 hospital beds in Australia). 3% of those 5 million could die - that's 150,000 potential deaths. Our health systems and morgues could not cope.
And that friends, is why you shouldn't go to the football this week and why the government has been recklessly slow in implementing measures to stop the spread. They're only just realising how bad this is and my concern is we've shut the gate after the horse had bolted.
I had a friend who was in Wuhan when this broke. Whilst China were irresponsible in how the handled the initial outbreak, I was staggered by what he said the authoritarian government did when they realised what they were dealing with. Barbed wire around buildings, compulsory masks, forced isolation - that's why they're now reducing numbers.
I’m not debating any other that mate . You’re numbers are exaggerated though , but that’s semantics , and I get it , as it rams your point home .
I’m saying for the most part , stop the panicking , follow what the authorities have said , don’t go to public places , wash your hands etc.
And more than likely you’ll be fine .
People are acting crazy mate . 10 years ago in another life , I spent 9 months in a place most people, will never see . With threats all around you. We followe our due dilligence . Did our check but for the most part , went about our day as normal as we could .
Relaxing is not apathy or complacency. And it actually leads to more coherent and thought about decisions as you’re minimising the amount of emotion is influencing these decisions . That’s all I’m saying. The TP shortage is case in point . It’s embarrassing and honestly frightening, because of how feral everyone gets in a crisis .
The NSW Govt itself is predicting 1.2 -1.5 million NSWmen to get it
On those numbers 5-7 million Australians get it
If people think that 1.2 is all going to happen over a two week period and then all stop in that same 2 week window
How do you get to work .....do you go to the shops ...do your kids go to school ...do you have elderly parents or Grandparents who need help
When was the last time you were at hospital ...how long did you wait under normal conditions ......we could operate off power shedding ..you may lose power for up to 6 hours a day
I'm not worried for myself or my kids ....we will get through it .......but many of us have elderly parents / grandparents /friends etc ...if they get it they may not be lucky
What is happening in Italy could end up happening here ...write it off to your own possibly demise
If you’re not going to read what I wrote don’t reply to me ! None of what you said is at all relevant . I’m merely talking specifically about 1 thing . Panicking! And how it adds nothing and is actually counter intuitive.
Be vigilant , stay safe . But relax . That’s it. You want to quote numbers and statistics to prove your point . That’s fine . I just refuse to live life as glass half empty.
I know how I go in a true crisis . And I go alright . When I’m relaxed . When I’m heightened . I make poor decisions .
If you want to focus on the fact , you or someone you love has a less than 3% chance to die . That’s fine . I’d rather focus on the more likely 97% chance you’ll be fine .
Not relevant to you I guess ...relevant to many others
Not relevant to the point I’m making.
1. Relaxing is not “apathy” ie. not giving a crap or being lazy
2. Panicking and carrying on , actually makes things worse.
3. Follow all processes and protocols and you will , just by statistics , be more than likely fine .
4. If you think you or someone you love is not fine get em to the hospital .
Otherwise chill out and stop perpetuating drama . And that’s world wide. Be vigilant . Stay safe . Get on with it .
My point is you will probably be OK and so will I probably
How many elderly family members do you have if they get it are far greater risk
I know how many I have and if everyone rushes those family members to their local hospitals (as you suggested ) the hospital system will crash it barely copes day to day without any problems
And when the Hospital crash all the other problems will increase ....staph infections etc ....last June we ran out the tablets taken for staph infections nation wide .. so what happened ..our hospitals had to take those who didn't have access to tablets on to keep them on IV meds
So how does panicking solve that scenario ? Also you’re acting like it’s the Black Plague? As in like everyone is going to require ER ? So people have to share bedrooms . They have to sleep on stretchers . Defence force doctors are called in to cope with demand . What’s the problem ? You might have to limit your tv time . Maybe you’ll have to go for a drive to another hospital . At no point is that a time for panic .
