Corona impact on NRL...?

I can't stand Cameron Smith but I agree, I wouldn't train unless a pay deal is agreed to. Makes sense. They are professionals, sorting out contract adjustments comes first before starting work . Am I missing something? 🙂 I'm a bit slow =p

I don’t see how this is the players being ‘spoiled brats’. Would you start working a job without knowing your pay? They’re also supporting the Warriors boys who would have to leave their families to come over here and train and they don’t know what they’re getting paid.

The coaches and players have always been in agreement that they won’t start training until the warriors are over here training. If the warriors choose not to fly over here until knowing what they’re being paid that seems fair enough to me

They're spoilt brats because they are thinking only of themselves. Realistically, they will be very lucky if the NRL starts up again this year, and very lucky if they still have jobs and get paid anything. If the games go ahead, tv will coverage it, and they will be paid something, that's a definite.

Refusing to train, and citing solidarity with the Warriors as they are disadvantaged by coming over with no guarantee that they will be paid as an excuse, is an absolute crock by the Australian clubs. Sick to death of these RLPA idiots.

The players, the admin, the tv networks - for all of them it's only about money. The only people involved in rugby league for whom money is not the primary factor is us the fans, and personally I hoped better by the players. It's not a job to play, it's meant to be a privilege.

I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t put my body and career on the line plus go through the intense lockdowns they’ll have to go through without knowing how much of a pay cut I’ll be taking. That seems fair enough to me.

You say it’s not a job but it is their job, and I’m sure most people wouldn’t work without knowing their pay. End of the day it was only a threat to push the NRL into offering them a deal and it’s worked, now they know what cut they’re taking and everyone can move on.

Channel 9 are the ones who caused this by delaying the broadcast deal trying to wiggle out of their contract + pushin the CEO out at the same time. If that doesn’t happen it’s already sorted by now.

Any player that wears our jersey and sees it as a job, does our club a disservice. That jersey with our emblem stands for something, and I'd wager that belief is the only thing keeping any interest in this sport for a lot of people.

And Channel 9 didn't push out the CEO, he made his own bed, and I can't comment further here on the reasons he left because I only know my conjecture and don't want to be slanderous. Why do you think though if he stayed a deal would be made between Channel 9 and the NRL? I haven't read anything else that suggests that.

Think of another sport, say boxing or NFL or something. Do you think they would start without sorting out the money first? NRL are professionals also. The team and badge does mean something to players, but ultimately they are professionals and I am sure want to be treated as such.

All very well, but a salary deal is a cornerstone of any employer/employee relationship.
How could we be told "it's happening" by the NRL Head Office when the players weren't even locked in?

It’s not the 1980’s anymore. Playing football is their job and it’s how they make their money. They have every right to know how much of a pay cut they’re taking before playing regardless of how much they’re earning

Exactly right mate. The NRL and V’landys keep using the word ‘definite’ even though there’s so many things to sort out still. Massive risk

I agree that the money should be sorted, certainly, but think they are going about it all wrong.
The NRL and the players and the tv stations all see it as a business, first and foremost. And in a business it's dog eat dog, there's no loyalty, no trust, no ethics, only rules which they bend and try to get around however they can. The camaraderie in the game is taking another hit, which hurts the game more than any corona virus ever could.
