I was just reading an article that in the USA over 100 thousand people are hospitalised with Covid-19 at the moment(BBC).I hate to think how many more have it and cant afford to be hospitalised. They are only 3 days into winter and on Wednesday another 195k were diagnosed with it

Yeah, the Emperor fiddles whilst the city burns, or in this case, the President espouses conspiracy theories in between games of golf as his people die. So often they cannot get tested because of the lack of them, let alone coverage to pay, yet there were still more than eight hundred thousand positives in the last four days alone. A period in which more than eleven thousand of his constituents have also officially died from Covid and going off the much greater overall national death figures, no doubt thousands more unofficially, just as they were similarly lost when it first hit the country and services were swamped.

After all this time we had a week when we were informed that staff in NSW quarantine hotels were still concurrently working at other locations. Now quite unbelievably, 2 international arrivals were allowed to transit through Sydney's airport onto a domestic flight to Melbourne.

At least they were picked up in Melbourne, as this failure could have destroyed the opening up around the country.

Evolution will take care of them. There will be less to vote for him in 2024.

Yes a major breach in security there. Considering they are escorted to buses to take them to hotel quarantine an investigation is needed to find out how this happened.

Not just those who can't afford it. Those who can afford it will also be turned away too because there are not enough beds.

As another day draws to a close, our world sees it's first 700k plus cases in 24 hours as the US that drives so much of these terrible numbers also hits a record. Whilst the country is on its way to 4k and quite likely even 5k official deaths a day, it is now regularly into the three thousands as it's leader still holds maskless rallies in ignoring the virus and worldwide numbers exceed 12k a day.

Of course the true numbers are much much greater, so let us all hope that the emerging vaccines are made available to all the vulnerable around the globe with haste.

I saw a news article the other day saying that the death count, occurring on a daily basis in the USA from Covid 19, was now greater than the death count from the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

My first reaction to that statement was that it was simply journalistic sensationalism without any regard for relevance. It probably was, because the journalist then said nothing to draw out any relevance.

But when I thought about it my reaction changed. The USA (ably supported by us) were willing to endure a ten year war as a response to the 9/11 deaths, but aren't willing to mandate the use of masks to help reduce a death count, just as large, occurring on a daily basis.

Strange priorities. Strange values.

?

It's okay Col, one day you will get past this and maybe even wake up to the fact that you were only one of the millions tricked by your idol, but you can always keep watching Sky after dark or listen to Alex Jones and co to make you feel better in the meantime.

Then again, you could just look at the utter failure shown in the horrendous graph below and make a reasonable decision right now.

With a lot of hard work and sacrifice Australia has been fairly successful in suppressing the local transmission of Covid19.

Ruby Princess aside, the outbreaks that we have seen have been related to hotel quarantine. In the case of Victoria there appears to have been a breakdown in infection control protocols. The precise cause of the outbreak in SA is not yet determined but the source has been identified as being related to the hotel quarantine process.

I think it's fair enough to say that an alternative to hotel quarantine is now required. Our governments needs to address this. The outbreaks in both Vic and SA have provided ample warning that this form of quarantine is not fully effective.

**I agree and it is ridiculous after all this time to still have staff working across multiple facilities.**

Was just listening to a report from SA that unlike Victoria, they "got lucky", in that the initial case was discovered because of persistence in getting that person to get a test despite negligible symptoms.

It’s the casualisation of work force across Australia that is the issue. These poor souls have to work across several work places just to make ends meet. Often they only get one or two shifts a week at each work place. Anything from 3hrs to 7hrs each shift.

As a society we really need to rethink this approach to workplace employment but I feel this will be just considered as part of the noise and nothing will change.

Couldn't agree more and a look back over this thread will show a good few expressing their concern over these issues as and possibly prior to the virus exposing these failings, with even to those that hadn't considered it realising the significance.

Sadly, as the dust settles it seems that many people are willing to forget those lessons and even allow an expansion of outsourcing to create further insecure workplaces that continue for others into the future.

Just thought I'd also let you know a bit more about the failures as you probably don't see much of actuality in your media choices, so here are just a couple of the thousands of examples of food lines across your mates constituency with these ones from Texas and Utah where you might want to note those parked and waiting in the background. Also that these people are so often waiting in lines more than a few kilometres long, having had to line up in the darkness of night to have any chance of getting something to feed their families.

this is something my sector of the public service is pushing....they hire hundreds and hundreds of casuals when there are full time jobs going, they hamstring the current fulltime staff as to what they can work as and where outside their main employment, and they have full time private people doing casual shifts here, not only taking away the permanents ability to pick up an extra shift or two, but especially cruels the casuals from getting their maximum number of shifts.
Example....there is one casual who works full time as a firey, comes in on his days off, and the person who only has this as a job has to scrape by....
just my rant, and might not be in quite the context of the conversation, but it is modern day work practices at its finest.
