Apart from the lockdowns, tomorrow covid will have the most influence on my life thus far as we won't be able to say goodbye in person to a relative and friend who passed at the grand age of 99 last week.

Still, I suppose that we are lucky to live in an age where we can at least join in on a digital platform. For a bit of levity at this sad time and @Snake, the guy we will be farewelling is Joe Blake.

I havent seen my wife since covid started and am very unlikely to see her again it is destroying us both but there is nothing i can do to fix it as she cant get a vaccination in the phillipines to come home.

Feel for both you guys.... I sorta know what you're going thru, my
Missus lost her mum a few months back in Samar... heartbreaking seeing her pain so far from her family.
I'm glad my parents never knew life as we know it now

My wife comes from Northern Samar from one of the smaller islands there.I feel sorry for your wife and yourself as Filipinos are very family oriented and it would have been devastating for both of you

Can you imagine the looney lefts reaction ,if the lockdown goes even harder. The ABC and Channel 10 will blow a fuse.

You do realise the most inept governments with covid have been right wing,Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon Johnson Bolsanaro and Duterte could give lessons on how to stuff things up.Scammo is following suit with the vaccine rollout(worst in developed nations).

I feel sorry for all my friends in Sydney. Lockdown can be tough - tougher for some than for others. At the moment I suspect that many people in Sydney aren't seeing any light at the end of the tunnel.

I think the NSW government has mishandled this wave, and the ensuing lockdown(s), to the extent that many people may have lost faith in the lockdown as being a way out. But standing on the side line and throwing rocks at them (the government) probably isn't going to help, (as tempting as it is).

I hope that you all get sufficient financial support so that you're able to hang in there, because, in the absence of widespread vaccination, lockdown appears to be the only mechanism that will give contract tracers a chance to get ahead of the spread.

For all the tough talk about bringing in the military..... the government using the forces for non-defence purposes is 100% illegal.

So when they help during natural disasters that's illegal too?

Depends on whether they're protecting a Commonwealth interest.

Martial Law?

There's no legal framework for Martial Law in Australia. it would be classified as a military coup.

Jadtiger, you clearly live in a parallel universe. "Most inept Goverments with COVID are right wing" . WRONG !!!
CHINA...Most of South America.... Sweden.... Italy....Greece.....New Zealand !!!!!! etc etc etc

China certainly did a poor job in regards to covid, how NZ gets mentioned in your list of incompetents is absolutely incredible. You didnt even try to defend the the right wing crazy governments that have failed badly and i would also put the pseudo dictatorship of Russia in the same category as you will never get a true figure from them either.

Defence are often called in to help with Bushfires and floods. They are allowed to be used when a state or national emergency is called.

I don't think it should be a right wing vs left wing debate. It should be a pro-science vs conspiracy theorist debate.

The conspiracy theorists have stuffed up big time. Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon is the best example. I don't believe that you can dispute that.

The poor countries have suffered and not because they are right or left wing but because they can't afford lockdowns and they don't have enough vaccines.

Lockdowns work in stopping the virus but they hurt the economy big time. They are way too blunt a tool but at the same time it's the only tool available once you have a significant breakout. It may even be with this delta variant there is no other option.

I think vaccines are the best way out of this situation. If you get vaccinated you should be safe. The conspiracy theorists don't like science though so they are anti-vaccines.

The top four countries that have been hit with the virus are right wing countries. USA, India, Brazil and Russia. France is fifth and their governing party is considered centre to centre right. UK is sixth and run by Tories, Turkey is seventh and they are right wing. After that you have Peru, Argentina and Spain which all have centre-left to left wing governments.

Really. How do we know this.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

My assumption is that if you filter the data by deaths per 1 million people you get to see the worst performing to best performing countries. The issue is much more complex than this because comparing say Australia to Indonesia or India is a bit unfair because Australia is much wealthier.

China comes in at number 201 with 3 deaths/million population.
New Zealand in at number 200 with 5 deaths/million population.
Australia in at number 166 with 36 deaths/million population.
Sweden in at number 39 with 1438 deaths/million population.
USA in at number 21 with 1883 deaths/million population.

Firstly personally I don't trust the numbers in China but this is the best that we have.

Interestingly Sweden and the USA have performed terribly compared to us.

177 cases for NSW ......4 more weeks of lockdown

Sorry for the bad news ladies and gents ...

The silence of the bashing of particular Premiers of other's states is deafening here in NSW now, including the ACT within. Oddly enough, those that have similarly managed and lead their sates of SA and Tasmania well respectively were almost immune from it.

Thanks Annastacia for protecting your state and allowing us WT supporters to have a match to watch each week.

Floods and bushfires can be justified as defending Commonwealth interests.

Enforcing a state public health order is 100% different.

Sydney generates majority of the country’s income, has majority of the population & international borders are closing from other countries - as such if COVID continues to blow out of control in Sydney it creates a large commonwealth risk hence can be called upon as it puts the rest of the country at risk.

Should also add the large debt that will continue to rise due to government financial support (not state financial assistance.

This is the attitude and isn't it great that we are now seeing more reasonable measures being put into place. Better late than never.

Still not quite enough to catch some of those living hand to mouth prior to this lockdown that have lost, but I congratulate those voices within our federal government that have overcome the philosophical ones bereft of compassion amongst them.

I am only catching up now having attended the funeral online and catching up afterwards.

Weekly $600 now up to the old Jobkeeper rate of $750, an additional $200 a fortnight? for those getting some form of benefit prior if they have lost 8? hours and extended business thresholds.

Sure on the first point, but don't quote me on the others. Seems to catch a few more of the needy and the extra $150 will be spent by nearly all that receive it. Good news.
