Because the parts of Sydney / NSW that need tougher restrictions have got them. The parts that don't have got less restrictions. That's entirely as it should be. For Tony Burke to insinuate otherwise is just blatant politicking and playing to his constituency. This should be above politics.

You are right. I live in a locked down suburb as well. It's just based on case numbers. What sucks is it gets made out to be a rich vs poor or white vs migrant issue. It shouldn't be like that.

If I was in a state like WA, SA or Queensland, I would be very hesitant about being pushed to open up to NSW travellers, even with increased vaccination rates.

WA/SA & Qld are in the enviable position of contributing 3/5ths of bugger all to the national GDP and therefore they can sit back whilst NSW and Sydney have to reopen to drive the nations economy. Should be reflected in the GST handbacks though.

Like other states, NSW could easily have jacked up and said no we can't accept so many people, and the feds would have been forced to reduce arrivals. But NSW wanted to portray an image of being an 'open for business, can do' state. I disagree that the other states aren't controlling it. Vic struglling, but most other states are doing fine.

That is the trope, perpetuated by WA, but simply not true. They are responsible for 15% of national GDP.

EDIT: For clarification, WA is responsible for the lions share of exports 36.5% and this is what the trope is based on however GDP isnt simply exports/imports (that is balance of trade) and Sydney is responsible for 80% of Aus financial income.

All States are taking returned travelers, although Tasmania were taking o/seas students.

Google Indooroopilly and the outbreak Qld has controlled.

And advocates for opening up, how about children under 12? The trials in the US are not expected to be completed until next year.

WA provide far more than its fare share of GST. If GST was retained, WA would be in a very strong position.
