All my life I have looked at New South Welshmen footballers with scorn. I have always looked upon their big mouths and lack of talent with a wry smile. Whenever I played against them all I saw was 17 men v 17 pasty faced, skinny legged dweebs….and so it has been in SOO for many a year. However that is starting to change.

FINALLY, finally NSW have prepared a side that is attempting to break the mould. Their defence tonight made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Outgunned in most positions, they held their line and won. Its been a long time since I have said QLD didnt lose that, NSW won it. Its been a long time since my state lost and I felt happy. NSW seem to have finally learnt what playing for your mate is all about. I personally believe we were never in that game tonight, not through lack of trying, but because our best kept hitting brick walls.

Can they keep that up for game 2? I see no reason why not. QLD must lift because if the blues play like that again this series is theirs. Game 2 will show the RL world either just how magnificent this QLD side is, or just how improved this NSW mentality is.

I cant wait.

The Qld side looks unbalanced

We looked short a prop imo and we got flogged in the yardage department every set until the last 15-20 minutes

That was superb defense by the Blues. We jacked some direction in that second half but we weathered that storm very well. I'm very relieved and very impressed.

Have not seen now defend like that in a long time. You could see how stuffed they were at the end but they kept turning up all night. Looks like both sides will have some changes for game 2.

Yep super defense. I think QLDs long standing advantage if having a consistent side is starting to catch up. They looked slow from slater to smith. They did play a man down all night though.

Our passing in a lot of those late moments was bad and the communication between blokes that have played 15-20 SOO games together

If the pass to Boyd hits him on the chest he scores

Inglis was flat footed all night , Parker was very quiet and Smith didn't run from dummy half once (obvious reasons in the 2nd half )

Read lots of stories how the Qld players voted on what they were going to do during their SOO build up

Mal needs to take control ,because we lacked the discipline we have shown in SOO's past

The only really strange call from a Qld POV was how Morris wasn't penalized for being off side when he ran back on after injuring his knee and ran down Inglis

He would of been required to retire the 10 before coming back on ( or at least got onside at some stage )

But as many said we got a couple of weird calls late in the game go our way

Shayne Hayne isn't up to NRL standard let alone SOO standard

And people can't understand why I call him Hometown Hayne

Yeh my initial thought was that Morris was offside

Same here ….. But how Qld got the scrum feed with 30 seconds on the clock I will never know ..... Vintage Shayne Hayne.

The way we tackled with Hometown Hayne getting the Q's on the front foot was just magnificent…..

Reminded me of the last few mins of the Parra v Dogs GF in 86.....just pure determination and will.....everyone out on there feet but just giving and giving,

I must admit i was skeptical about Beau Scott but man he pulled of some absolute pearlers in the last ten that HAD to be made.

Cant wait for round two....although both teams mat be vastly different with all the injuries.

also missed several crucial tackles that led to linebreaks but luckily didnt result in tries.

i've watched about 3 games since super league.the last time was when farah was first selected.
was a rainy day,so decided to watch woods and farah and wow, what a game.
that was a game you could market to the world.
and the job farah did after the inglis break to hold up his play the ball and get everyone back onside was that of a jedi hooker.
might just watch the next one.

Agreed… NSW defended there arses off in that final 15min and this is something that could see them build a series victory from.

It was spectacular considering Qld was belting them everytime they had the ball... They just kept getting themselves up and defended superbly!

One more thing... I'm not sure the NRL has a Referee capable of adjudicating this game anymore. The last 2 years has been appalling!

Good old QLD condescension.

Love hearing about NSW arrogance and how QLD are so far above us in every aspect. The irony is astounding.

Dont be ungrateful LaT…theyre giving us a ''rap''

We are _nearly_ there...I have a slight spring in my step now, my chest is puffed out a bit more

As well as NSW played the toads were always just a bit of magic away from getting the bacon. Cronk leaves the field early in proceedings, some big guns for QLD playing like normal players for a change and they are still in it till the last second of the game shows me that NSW will have to lift the bar even higher next time.

I lost my passion for SOO a few years ago, thought the product had lost it magic and was a over hyped game, last night has won me back. No player had anything in the tank at full time. NSW as at long last is starting to build that same sort of spirit that has got the toads over the line so often. Gallen and Farah are the leaders

thought luke lewis was massive when he came on. a couple of runs coming out of our end were amazing. tbh he seemed more of a leader than farah or even gal. am i right in saying that lewis is the only one in the current team to have won a series?

Losing Cronk so early really threw Qld for a loop. They lacked organisation for most of the game afterwards, but the way they were able to re-group and produce the onslaught late in the second half, after looking so lost, spells danger for NSW in the next game, imo. NSW played awesome last night and this will certainly bode well for them going into Game 2, but they will need to forget about last night's victory, immediately and move forward. We've managed to win 1 game during the past 2 series - this ain't over yet.
