Khawaja and Hauritz to QLD confirmed. With Hughes, Phil Jaques and Simon Katich, a total of five former test players have now departed. What's going on at the Blues?

Hauritz was lucky to be in the side anyway, i rate O'keefe miles ahead of him. Said to see Usman and Hughes go but with blokes like Kurtis Patterson in the fringes i doubt their lose will be to great

EDIT: Watch Nick Maddinson make a ton of runs this shield season

Yeah agree there's still a heap of talent there, particularly the young batsmen that you mention. The concerning thing for me is that Hughes and Khawaja, two established players that NSW were desperate to keep, chose to leave. Going off the media reports, it doesn't seem as though money was a factor in either decision. Rather, there seems to be issues with the culture, and/or the relationship with the coach.

How about these for bowling figures in a 20/20?

BAW Mendis O 4 M 2 R 8 W 6 Econ 2.00

Yep 6 for 8! I recall a thread about records that could last forever - it'd take a big effort to top that. Poor Zimbos must have thought he was bowling grenades…

Never thought I'd see the day when we seem to be panicing when playing Ireland

Maybe thats the state of Australian cricket

Only 20/20, its for kids and those with short attention spans. Closing your eyes and swinging aint batting….

David Hussey not being in the 20/20 side is a bigger farce than anything we've had here. Ian Chappell summed it up best last night when commentating I thought. He said something along the lines of the Aussie team having shot themselves in the foot a bit by making Bailey the captain, we now are forced to pick him even though hes probably the worst batsmen in the side. They should've made Watson captain the fools.

Still Hussey is a long way ahead of White, Maxwell, Bailey and Christian and not picking him will come back to bite us when we play the top teams

On another note Moses Henriques is having a good time over in Perth for NSW, got runs in the Ryobi cup and the Shield game

Am I the only one that feels Mark Cosgrove should be the next in line for Australia at Test and ODI level? He's been killing it since he moved to Tassie. A couple of more good Shield performances and I can easily see him sneaking into the Test side ahead of Cowan.

Do you blokes want Khawaja back ??

He is junk personified as a batsman

Bring back Stuart Law or Sam Trimble PLEASE

I'd like to see Khawaja back in the test side soon, he's a classy player with a solid technique. The number 3 spot is his for the taking, Watson to open and get rid of Warner. People go on about Hughes not having the technique to hold up in England, Warner's is ten fold worse and he will be eaten alive by Anderson and co over there.

Another who could be an option to open is Rob Quiney, he's made alot of runs over the last few years and if he keeps it up people will start talking.

Theres going to be a number of batting spots coming up for grabs over the next 12-18 months and we really need some young kids to step up and make some runs

Surely there are some cricket fans on the forum?

who do you have in your starting XI for the first test against south africa at the Gabba?

1\. Cowan
2\. Warner
3\. Watson.
4\. Ponting
5\. Clarke
6\. Hussey
7\. Wade
8\. Siddle
9\. Pattinson
10\. Lyon
11\. Hilf

Based on last year's series I think they'll be hard pressed to go past this line up considering how they treated the indians when they were here. Personally I'd have Starc in there if we could because I think he's been so dangerous recently but I think it will take a test or two (or maybe an injury) before he gets a start.

I'm on the fence re: Hughes. I'd love him in there as he scores runs unlike Cowan but I'm just conscious of how he played last time and whether or not he is ready after 3 good games for SA

It's probably one of the most wide open selections for a long time. There are a lot of bowlers in with a chance. I think Cummins will probably be in the 12\. I'm not convinced about Ed Cowan but then again who is really putting their hand up to replace him? Same with Warner who looks out of sorts. I like Watson being moved from opening. 3 possibly isn't a bad slot for him or even 6 if you want to give him a rest.

I'm up in the air about Haddin and Wade. I think they've both got plenty to offer, and I think Haddin is a more consistent batsman than Wade, however, I believe Wade has more to offer behind the stumps. I'd have Cowan over Hughes, as Phil is a bit of a gamble, whilst Cowan proved himself v. India. I'd be tempted to find a place for Forrest in the side, or maybe even give Marsh a second chance if injuries occurred.

On the bowling side, I think last summer's battery did well, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I think that if the selectors go with an all-pace line-up, then Starc should find a place there.

My team would be:

1\. Cowan
2\. Warner
3\. Watson
4\. Ponting
5\. Clarke
6\. Hussey
7\. Wade
8\. Siddle
9\. Pattinson
10\. Starc/Cummins/Lyon (depending on pitch/injuries)
11\. Hilfy
-
12\. Forrest
13\. Hughes

I don't think Forrest is test standard myself. Not convinced Cowan is either but he does a job to blunt the new ball at least. Our bowling looks okay but it would be nice to see someone score some runs regularly. Where are the blokes averaging 45+ in the shield? Poor Dave Hussey can never get a look in but everyone who has a half decent run in the shield gets picked.

Wade for me over Haddin at this stage.

Forrest could have it but again agree biggest issue is no wonder kids coming through grade at the moment.

Might be worth also mentioning callum ferguson in the convo too as he was on the cusp two years ago and if he can regain the confidence he'll be a force.

Warner will be eaten alive by the South African bowlers who are several classes above the Indians or West Indians. Cowan might not be scoring mountains of runs at the moment but atleast hes got a solid technique and for that im willing to stick with him. The problem is there's no one really putting there hand up for batting spots like they are for bowling spots, thats not to say there isn't kids with potential but there not making the runs that warrant selection. Potential batsman to get a cap this summer for me are:

Ferguson
Maddinson
Khawaja
Burns
Doolan
Hughes
Smith

On the bowlers for the Perth and Brisbane tests they have to go with 4 quicks with Pattinson being the only must have for mine. Hilfy while being a good bowler is really only in the side because hes a genuine swing bowler but i think Starc can take over that role with the added advantage of being a left armer

While im at it, the Australia A team is a joke, if there not going to pick the best state players available (Bird, Cutting and Hazelwood) whats the bloody point of the side? Coulter-Nile and Hastings are good state players at best and Mcdonald and Henriques bowling first change against Amla, Kallis and Smith? It'll be murder. And whats this obsession with Glen Maxwell? If they think hes test quality then they may aswell put me in. I accept i've got a bit of NSW bias but why doesn't Steve O'Keefe ever get a mention? Hes got a first class bowling average of 27 and a batting average of 36

Having a batting average 5-10 years ago of 36 and a bowling average of 27 meant something then

It means little now ,Shield cricket is in rapid decline from what I have seen
