Cricket Season Thread

Make Rob Quiney 12th Man IMHO. Watson and Starc should be a no brainer for Pattinson and Quiney.

Has apparently extremely highly regarded in our camp by players and media alike, despite his results - really enthusiastic, and a genuine nice guy - much akin to Beau Ryan during the last couple of years at the Tigers.

Steyn has been a disappointment so far this tour for S.Africa - Very underwhelming, but then again, most of the South African attack has been.

So lads, when do we say "Buh-Bye" to Ponting? It's the great big white elephant in the room at the moment…
 
Yeah I agree it's a no brainer for Watson and Starc to come into the side for the third test.

With Pointing, I hope that he will be man enough to make that call himself and not get the dreaded tap on the shoulder. Obviously if he doesn't get a big score by the end of the Sri Lankan tests it will make that decision easier.

Nothing worse than seeing a champion player struggling but I believe he has earned the right to be given until the end of the Sri Lankan tour.

I've got a feeling they will rest Siddle for Perth, its a short turn around and hes had to do a lot of bowling with Pattinson out. Bird is a big chance to come in, though his record does flatter him a little with majority of his wickets taken at Bellerive oval, a bowlers paradise.

People say Bellerive is a bowler's paradise but Tassie made 2 for over 200 after WA got knocked over so it couldn't have been a total minefield. Back a few years ago people used to talk about how much of a road the wicket was down there.
 
Tubby is making a good point of how a bowler can give himself more variation by using the crease. Bowling nearer or further from the stumps changes the angle and its something a lot of bowlers don't realize.

The South Africans will get out of this with a draw I feel. The pitch hasn't deteriorated enough and they are batting extremely well.

Brilliant debut from Du Plessis, arguably the best debut 100 of all time.

On Australia:

Wade had a shocker with the gloves and wasn't much better with the bat.

The bowlers were pretty poor tbh, Hilfy was pretty much ineffectual just like he was at the Gabba. Siddle bowled with heart but aside from that last spell he wasn't to great. Lyon was pretty poor to, he was economical but to bowl the amount of overs he did today on a day 5 Adelaide pitch with that many men around the bat for such a long time, he really should have done better. My problem with Lyon is he is rather 1 dimensional, particularly when bowling to a set batsmen, he doesn't use the crease much and doesnt have much variety in the balls he bowls, apart from perhaps some variation on speed.

Im expecting Starc to come in for Pattinson, Watson to come in for Quiney, and depending on how Siddle pulls up Hazlewood or Bird to come in for Hilf or Siddle
 
What an effort by the Saffers, not the no 1 side in the world for no reason. Definitely will take the momentum into Perth. Skull would be re-examining his comments on day one when he said Du Plessis was an inferior batsman to Duminy, Taking nothing away from Clarke, but Du Plessis had to be MOM

On the Aussies, i know the last session was edge of the seat stuff, but the commentators did a first class job at turning it around and making it look like the Aussies were the ones up against it, which they were, but they were only up against it due to their own ineptitude. Prattling on about Siddle, when Du Plessis had been at the crease for 9 hrs. You can't compare the two. Siddle could have prevented being out there that long, Faf had no choice. Nothing should be taken away from the Herculian effort by the Saffers

On Perth, SA definitely will take in the momentum. The Aussies will be knackered spending the last day and a half in the hot sun and they'll give anything to win the toss and get them out in the heat again only 3 days later. Who knows what will happen with the Aussies attack. Kallis has to play, he's worth more to them on one leg then any replacement is on two. Philander should come in for Tahir for a 4 pronged-pace attack. They'll be hard to beat, especially if they win the toss. I think Clarke is due to fail soon and Ponting and Quiney are bunnies, so theres something else in SA's favour

Simply not enough NSW players in the side, we have to have Haddin back behind the stumps, he can not only do what a wicket keeper does best but he can also score runs, Quiney has been a disappointment and has to make way for former Blue Usman Kwuaga (sic) and after carrying the drinks Mitchell Starc deserves a go with Pattison injured.
 
interesting to see them name a 14 man squad without quiney but punters there to equal waughs record for most matches. watson being fit obviously will help us which should mean lyon plays as well. other players added were hastings johnson and hazelwood honestly i hope none of those 3 play and they just make straight swaps of starc for pattinson and thats it obviously depends on how siddle and hilfy pulls up after there monster effort

I have a feeling they could play Johnson as well which would be a travesty on so many levels
 
Can I ask why people see anything in Lyons . He can't drift the ball ,he doesn't use enough flight and seems like he isn't thinking too much about what he is doing

I can't remember who (might've of been Chappelli) said that to be an off spinner in Australia you have to have all 3 of the above skills , and its very true and I know he thinks the sun shines out of Malletts behind , but he is the last decent offie we have had

Clarke is a better spinner than Lyons in my opinion and Warner with a lot of work could be a half decent leggie
 
lyon may not be the most gifted spinner but he is relatively consistent. his stats have been impressive as to what he has done taking 50 wickets in 13 tests is no small feat. i think today he was made to look worse than what he is as he did seem to rush at the end and he would of been incredibly tired but if you compare him to yesterday he bowled a lot better then. the key for a good offie is to use flight, bounce and turn to be consistent. he may not have the best flight but i think he does use the bounce and turn to his advantage. he is still only young but easily the best one we have used since warne there was talk of holland pre series but i feel he has done enough to stick around until probably india where that could also lead to us playing two spinners. he is also very green in playing cricket at this level and has a lot to work on but there are good signs for lyon.

Most offies can turn the ball , but then most international batsman can read the spin from the pitch

Agree he is only young , but he is going to need to learn the art of flight and drift in a real hurry as many teams once they face him again will put him to the sword as he will only be one dimensional

I think he should look at some footage of Tim May and Colin Miller. Tim May's major strength was his flight and drop, Collin Miller's was his drift and spin, both were very good off spinners who had success in Australia and overseas.

Lyon I think can be successful at this level but if he isn't going to bowl a doosera, then he needs to learn more about subtle variations like speed, flight, drift and use of the crease more. Maybe he needs to consult Shane Warne more so he can understand the mindset of a batsman more so he can develop some tactics and field placings.
