Apparently he required CPR on the edge of the field for 30 minutes and may have even had a heart attack there too.
He's in an induced coma and been or is still with the neurosurgeon.
To say this is concerning is an understatement. Everything's crossed for one of my favourite players who hasn't had the fairest go with the selectors.
Here's hoping young Sean Abbot has a supportive network around him too.
The bouncer is an intimidation tactic. It's bowled to get batsman out of the way off the stumps. I don't know if you can legislate against the ball but. Perhaps a different design on the helmet to further protect the skull.

I never heard of McGrath ever needing to intimidate someone, he used his head to intimidate, its all he needed. Guys like Lee and Johnson, its all they have. Take away the ability to intimidate and they have nothing.

There doesn't seem to be any positive sign from anyone thus far. Very worrying.

You're referencing one great and his talents. How about the all conquering Carribean team before the Aussies got their act together? They had some greats who bowled great full stuff and great short stuff.
None of this matters regardless. Let's just hope Phil pulls through. I haven't heard one positive sign yet. Very very sad.

Peaches, if god forbid this kills him, you'd be high to think that changes to the law won't be made. Regardless of how many times this has happened. This delivery has always been a disaster waiting to happen

I don't know how you could even legislate against the bouncer. Do you call a noball for a ball that goes over chest height to remove all possibility? What happens if the ball spits off a bowler friendly pitch from a good length?
There are so many variations when a ball hits the pitch and to try and legislate against every variety so there is no danger at all when a ball is hurled down at 150 km/hr is just not possible. There is an element of danger to it. That's why we love fast paced bowling. All batsman know they could be hit.
This is just a freak incident and trying to ban a ball no natter the outcome of Phil Hughes health, is not the right way of going about things in my view as a cricket lover and Phil Hughes fan.

Whats so important about having to ''intimidate'' Peaches? If you were such a great bowler you wouldn't have too. You ask how you'd legislate it, perhaps the same way you legislate beamers.

Bowling a bouncer is trying to remove the batsman from jumping on the front foot and protecting the stumps. It's a kin on trying to put a big hit in defense and ruffle the ball loose and accidentally getting them in the head. It's a part of the game.

The bouncer is a legitimate tactic, and the only people that use it with the intent to injure are thugs. It gets the batsman jumping, playing horizontal shots, and off the front foot; there's no way it could be outlawed without replacing bowlers with a bowling machine.
Accidents happen, and this is a frightening one. Best wishes to Phil and his family.

It's a freak accident. Wish Hughes and his family the best of luck.
GNR, bouncers are bowled millions of times and this has almost never happened. When players go out to bat, they're aware of the risks. God forbid, if something even more serious is to happen to Hughes and they change laws for that- it'd merely be a knee jerk reaction.

And how do you think the cricket authorities will react if he loses his life? ''Oh its a tragic accident, but bowling 140-150km balls at batsmen's heads is apart of the game, time to move on''. I don't think so. I wouldn't be surprised if this makes a lot of batsman gun shy now.
And Tig-prmz, its not a freak accident when you aim a ball at that pace at a guys skull.

It was Sean Abbott bowling, so mid-130's max. More needs to be said about the inadequate protection from the helmet than the legitimacy of a bouncer. If the helmet does its job properly then there should not be even the slightest chance of impact causing such severe damage.
Fox were interviewing Brendan Julian and he said he was hit in an almost identical spot yet batted on. It's an accident, it happens, unfortunately to a young man in the prime of his life with plenty ahead of him, but that's all it is.
Again, sympathies to the Hughes family, and also Abbott. Here's hoping we see the two back playing soon.
