Cricket Season Thread

I was wondering why Hot Spor wasn’t used the other day.
This is why.

Hot Spot is not in use this summer because broadcast partners Fox Sports opted to ditch it.

Poms being the compass of moral judgement, this should end all debate.
Well said Vaughan and BF
Been half out of action last few days not feeing great and wake up to a text sent late night 31/12 saying I'm positive to Covid 19
Great way to welcome in 2025 .My first time and at 77 I noticed something
Looking forward to Friday a test we simply can't lose so I hope the selectors are careful

Get better champion @Stevec - looks like you've got 2 tests in front of you. 😉
All the best mate.

Bummer.
Take it easy.

It seems the Aussie 11 are sticking by their mates and Marsh will probably survive .Starc will also survive unless scans reveal rib cartilage tear !
Note his 1st spell on day 5 was fantastic most balls over 140 k a day getting swing .He got Kohli but Jaiswal again had many plays and misses early on
Makes me laugh with Bumrahs loud comment to Labuschagne as being the luckiest player he has seen ever
To a lesser extent the same comment could be made to Jaiswal

If any changes im a bit cold on Beau Webster as I don't think he is getting wickets
If Starc is out id probably go for Sean Abbott who has decent pace and can also bat a bit
Even if Starc is in I'd be inclined to give Abbott a go in lieu of Marsh
Re Jhye Richardson I'd be terrified he might break down half way thru India's 1st innings
All this bowling 4 overs in BBL proves nothing
Its also Abbotts home ground
I've got fingers crossed for Starc

I think all this BBL right in the middle of our International cricket season is depleting our test fast bowling stocks
We have Jhye Richardson , Spenser Johnson ,Xavier Bartlett ,Michael Neser
All very good bowlers who play game after game bowling 4 overs Max
It means we rely game after game with our same attack
I hope they don't run out of gas as it has happened before

I’m thinking if Marsh gets dropped it’s highly likely he will be replaced an all-rounder or bowling all-rounder (someone like neser if he wasn’t injured) because it’s a fairly short turnaround into the last test of a 5 test series so I’m sure Starc and Cummins might be feeling it a bit and it would be good to have some extra batting coverage as well given the fragility and inconsistency of our batting order.

Looking at the potential all-rounders that could come into the team and there shield stats.
Beau Webster. Can bowl both medium pace and off-spin and I haven't been watching shield so I don't know what he's been doing but it provides some versatility depending on how the pitch acts in Sydney.
Shield Stats: 4 Matches, 6 innings, 303 runs @ 50.50 and SR of 62.11 with a HS of 113. 96.5 overs for 9 wickets at 37.88 with an economy of 3.52.
Aus A stats: 2 Matches, 4 innings 145 runs @ 72.50 (50 more runs than Konstas, only 16 less than McSweeney), SR 59.67. 48 overs, 7 wickets @19.57, econ. 2.85.

Jack Edwards. Currently 3rd in wickets in Shield, bowls medium pace. Been playing well in Big Bash with good cricket shots when I've seen him (i.e not playing like JFM).
Stats: 5 Matches, 7 innings, 215 runs @35.83, SR 52.56. 155.2overs with 20 wickets @21.6, economy of 2.78.

Sean Abbott. 2 matches, 4 innings, 75 runs @ 25, SR 56.81. 82.2 overs 13 wickets @19.84, economy of 3.13. He's been in the team as a substitute for a decent portion of the series so I feel there is a good chance he will get a go, although I'd guess most likely as a replacement for Starc than Marsh.

I don't think there really is anyone else pushing for selection as an all-rounder in Shield other than these guys so my pick would probably be Webster as his batting average is reasonably high (particularly in comparison to the others) and he does have good versatility with the ball. Bowling wise his stats aren't as good as Edwards and Abbott this year (in terms of avg.) but it's better than Marsh's test average and in the Aus vs India A he got Nitish Reddy out 3/4 times which could be a good matchup given Nitish has scored their 2nd most amount of runs and has been really consistent.
Additionally Webster topped the run charts last year with 938 runs @58.62 in 19 innings, 160 runs ahead of 2nd (Bancroft). He also was the 11th highest wickettaker with 30 @29.30. This made him the second player in history to score 900+ runs and take 30+ wickets in a Sheffield Shield season since Sir Garfield Sobers.

Additionally there are some doubts over Starc and who his replacements could be. I haven't watched too much shield so don't know how some of these people bowl (ideally you want some variance in your bowlers styles like we currently have).

In Shield Jack Bird and Fergus O'Neill are currently the leading wicket-takers but Bird is 38 and that would be pretty pointless given he might not even be playing cricket professionally within the next 18 months. I've been a fan of O'Neill for a while as I've always checked how Scotty's been doing in Shield and Fergus is usually doing just as well. He's averaging 19.31 with the ball this season and 23.37 with the bat (career first class average of 21.50, Starc's is 21.28) so would be similar to Starc given he's handy with the bat. His profiles say he's a fast bowler so he must have some pace but he is right handed so if we were looking for a left-hand replacement he wouldn't fit (which turns out to be pointless upon further research).

Sean Abbott has already been mentioned earlier so won't drone on. There is Jhye Richardson but I would not risk it at all. Test cricket is completely different to the BBL which is all he has played apart from one shield game and a few one dayers over a month ago.

Highest left-handed bowler is Joel Paris with 15 wickets @12.8 with an economy of 1.87 but I don't see him being selected and it looks like he might have got injured, only playing 3 games and has a history of soft-tissue injuries. Though these are impressive stats. There are no other lefties I would bother entertaining in shield (unless I missed someone).

I think it's a race between Abbott and O'Neill but based on the comments of McDonald it will probably be Abbott or Richardson as those were the names he mentioned when asked about Starc. I would really like to see O'Neill though, career shield bowling average of 19.91 while Abbott has a first class average of 30.38.

My Sydney line-up
Khawaja, Konstas, Labuschagne, Smith, Head, Webster, Carey, Cummins (c), Starc/O'Neill, Lyon, Boland.
