Self indulgent is an apt description. And as someone else mentioned, Australian commentary (in most sports) has been really Americanised the last decade. Very sad.

Test matches don’t need it, they build the drama, but it’s an instant gratification world.

I really doubt McDonald and Bailey judgement as if they really analysed the Perth test they would see Doggett didn't bowl well despite 5 wickets from bouncers .
To omit Lyon with 560 wickets in Brisbane so they could have 4 RH medium pace bowlers all very similar also is just dumb

Nezer 3.06 rpo got 1 wicket
Boland 4.58 rpo got 1 wicket
Green 5.38 rpo got 0 wickets
Doggett 5.43 rpo got 0 wickets

Starc and Boland rpo suffered last 5 overs when England smashing it everywhere yet Green and Doggett contributed nothing but gave up a lot of runs .
