Cricket Season

I thought I'd start the old cricket season thread again now that Summer is approaching

Firstly, a great series win by the guys in India, to win the series in India's backyard after being 2-1 down, with 9 players missing through injury is a big big achievement!
The bowlers stood up a different times, Watson was great after a bad start with the ball, Hauritz has been economical, and Bollinger was outstanding.
With the bat, Hussey has been a standout (Still not sure if he should be in the Test team), Watson has been aggressive, and Marsh and White have been good too.

Looking forward to the Summer, there's going to be plenty of competition for the Test spots, some wont agree but I would go:

1\. S Katich
2\. P Hughes
3\. R Ponting
4\. M Clarke (If still injured, then M Hussey to bat at number 5 or 6)
5\. M North
6\. S Watson
7\. B Haddin
8\. M Johnson
9\. N Hauritz
10\. P Siddle
11\. D Bollinger

12th man: J Krejza

 Nice one jazza…..it's been a great one day series in India and I agree a great achievement by Ricky and the Australian team.....his captaincy hasn't been to bad either....

Can't wait for the Summer of Cricket to begin.....flying to Brisbane with my brother in law for Day 2 of the Test then flying back that night....never done it before but traditions gotta start somewhere.... :sunglasses:

First Test Team

S Katich
S Watson
R Ponting
M Clarke
M North
B Haddin
M Johnson
B Lee
P Siddle
D Bollinger
J Krejza

12th B Hilfinhaus....

Not a fan of Clarke at 4, his last stint at 4 ended in tears, plus he is doing a great job at 5, why move him. I do think it's time for Hussey to move on from Test Cricket though, although his ODI form is sublime.

My team for the Windies series is:
Katich
Hughes
Ponting
North
Clarke
Watson
Haddin
Johnson
Hauritz
Hilfenhaus
Clark

I would give Siddle the series off, give him a few solid weeks to recover, we should be fine without him. If Clarke is still out then leave Huss in the side, and bat North to 5.

katich
hughes
ponting
Clarke

Watson
Haddin
Johnson
Bollinger
Clark
Sidde
Hauritz twelfth man I think theres a smokey we should try this year and thats throw STEVE SMITH FROM NSW
in he can turn it a mile and is a good batsmen hes our most exciting leggie since warne and I beieve hes only
20 or 21

He looks like a great future player, but I would wait a year or so and just give him as much Shield experience as possible and get Thornley/Katich to bowl him as much as possible so he learns how to bowl on a last day pitch They only play 10 Shield matches per summer so it takes a long time to build up some experience so he needs to play as many Shield matches as he can. I'd also have Warney helping him out as much as possible.

Still, the Windies and Pakistan generally play leg spin very bad so if they want to throw him in, it wouldnt be such a bad time to do it.

I can't believe the hype around Steve Smith. I see him as a good batting all-rounder. If he's ever in the Australian side it should be at 6 (ie as a Batsman not a bowler). Last time we played a batsman who can bowl some spin as our specialist spinner it was a disaster (Cameron White).

Yeh i think its to early for him to play, but he does turn the ball so if can continue to work on his bowling and not bowl the odd half tracker then he'll go well, he doesnt need all these different variations like the flipper, etc. If develops a good leg spinning stock ball that he can control then he'll go good in the future.
I think we've got enough batting allrounders, and we've got good depth in our batting anyway so if I was Cricket Australia or NSW Cricket I'd tell him not to worry about his batting, just focus on his bowling, his bowling would be a greater benefit for Aus then his batting I think.

The White thing was doomed before it started, I still cant believe they selected him for 4 Test matches! If they were going to play him they shouldve picked him to bat at 6, bowl a bit and have 4 bowlers including Krezja on that tour :brick:

Lee = Gone from Sheffield Shield match which = Gone from the first test.

Elbow injury has flared up again.

I noticed smith scored 81 off 59 balls against tasmania the other day.The way he handled himself in the final of the t20 champions league final was superb with poise beyond his years. If he can continue to improve his bowling I think he can be a champion.

I can't say I'm too excited about the West Indies coming out. No doubt I'll watch as much as I can but West Indian cricket is an absolute shambles. I'd prefer to see us play Bangladesh, Zimababwe or Kenya - they might be easy beats but they'd play with all the heart in the world.

It strikes me as being one of the most unexciting Aussie summers of cricket for some time and the fact that it'll be Richie's last behind the mic is quite sad.

For special comments…......not commentary which is even better....It will be ALL GOLD.......

Now Lee's out In Hilfy.......Clark S 12th man......

I cannot understand why Stuart Clark is not the first bowler picked by the selectors for every test match. Just look at his career numbers:

Match 24 Inns 48 Balls 5146 Runs 2243 Wkts 94 BBI 5/32 BBM 9/89 Ave 23.86 Econ 2.61

The way he's been treated by the selectors throughout his test career is a disgrace.

I couldnt agree more clark in the test arena has been mcgrath like with his line and length. :righton:

Well I think the problem with Clark is that his pace has dropped off a fair bit, on the weekend he was bowling basically medium pace around 125km.
And I think the selectors feel that going into the future the core group will be Siddle, Johnson, Hilfy, Bollinger, Krezja and Hauritz.
His stats are great, but in saying that, in his first 18 months he was averaging 19 odd, now its 24 so Im guessing that in the last 2 years, his average has been around 30 with the ball which is about the same as Johnson and Co anyway.
Theyre the only reasons why I think the selectors have not picked him.
In saying that i wouldnt mind seeing Clark in there ahead of Hilfenhaus if it comes down to those 2 bowlers.

Well, the 12 man squad has been announced, just the one change and thats Bollinger coming in. There's no room for Clark, Krezja, or Hughes.

Hussey hangs onto his spot and Watson will still open. Personally if they're gonna play Hussey then id like to see him open with Watson in the middle order, I think Mr Cricket builds up to much nervous energy waiting to come in, plus he opens at first class level and i think it unbalances the side seeing Watson open in Tests.

Also I read that Clark wasnt selected because the selectors are looking ahead to next years Ashes series, if thats the case then why is Hussey there, they're about the same age and Hussey's record the last 18 months in Tests has been terrible.

Why would their be any room for Krejza?

Siddle, Hilfenhaus and Johnson do a good enough job going for 4 an over, do we really need another bowler pulling out figures of 1/135?

Fact is Hauritz is just as likely to take wickets as Krejza, but he doesn't go for 6 an over doing so.

Well I dont know if you've watched him in the Ford Ranger Cup this season or even seen some of the Shield scores but Krezja has really improved his control this season. One example was last weekend at North Sydney Oval (Which is one of the smallest grounds in the world) where he opened the bowling on a flat deck with Hughes and Warner facing, yet he only went for 12 runs in 5 overs.

He had a good Aus A tour and his stats so far this season are pretty impressive when you consider Hobart favours the seamers:

Shield matches:
3 Matches
96.1 overs
306 runs
8 wickets
Average - 38.25
Economy - 3.18

Ford Ranger Cup:
4 Matches
35 overs
134 runs
2 wickets
Average - 67
Economy - 3.82

I think his tight bowling has lead to the other spinner Xavier Doherty picking up wickets in the Ford Ranger Cup.
