Me & my wonderful Mrs. have just purchased our first home….
Waiting on the keys and just picturing a few reno improvements we're going to do.

Any WTF members dabbled in some renovations in the past?

Interested to hear stories ( COST also )

We are blessed to have close friends who are trade qualified and willing to help out with a lot of stuff (Plumbing, electrical, construction, etc)

Mainly keen on re-doing the bathroom and the kitchen.
Has anyone done theirs before?

Congrats Demps

I have renovated in the past and now have a swag of tradies that do most of the heavy lifting.

My advice is dont rush and save the $$ to get the right people doing the important and cosmetic work ie plumbing Tiles…

Painting, Gardening, digging and Hardcore cleaning you should do yourself.

PS - We upgraded to a sweet 6 BR in Picnic Point in Jan. Loving it.

Thanks!
Good advice.

We plan on doing all the demolition, painting, gardening, digging, cleaning, etc all ourselves.

Tiling is what I'm worried about.
Don't want to do it ourselves and don't know anyone.

Expensive?

Dont even try tilingthe house yourself! Haha

Paint it yourself though and tiling is depending on the tile you choose and how big the section is. If you go to a tiles shop near your house they should be able to send someone out for a decent price.

Yeah around $35-40 per square metre Demps

Wouldn't attempt to do it yourself , it takes a bit to get used to cutting tiles

Sometimes the tiles shops have their own tilers and can be a bit cheaper that way

Pays to ask

Beware using family and friends.
Best way to lose family and friends !

Beware using qualified tradesmen.
Best way to get ripped off !

Beware doing it yourself.
Best way to end up with an unfinished job !

Good luck Demps

Yeah that sounds good…
If you mess the tiling up, it'll cost you a lot.
Like water seepage damaging the house, etc.

Needs to be done right, just want it for the right price also.
Really excited about it all to be honest.

Congrats and good luck! You can also contact a builder who will do everything for you for a little extra $$ probably the best way, less headache and safer.

My best mate is a builder…
He's going to be helping out a lot over the weekends and whatnot.

Still need tilers done by a tiler, etc...

Gonna take before and after photos.

Most builders are pretty handy with the tiles Demps …......

Is it a big area or mainly just your wet areas (kitchen ,laundry ,bathroom/s )

Builders rarely tile happy, completely different trades.

Most builders can tile Milky , they just don't want to

You wouldn't get them to do the waterproofing , but everything else

My step father is a retired master builder

Defs just tiling the bathroom at first, maybe the kitchen and laundry at a later time.
Would want a tiler to do it for sure, dunno about builders doing it.

Pre hard job if U haven't done it a few times Im told.
Not willing to take the risk.

Congrats Demps, fun times and heaps to do no doubt.

I run a property service business down here in the Gong, while i agree with you on the tiling dont rule out a general handyman for some of these other jobs.

Do your research and look for reviews and or pictorial evidence of their work but some of them are very good at what they do and can quite often do a job a lot cheaper than someone who specialises in that field.

When it comes time to paint dont skimp on your paint brushes, buy a quality cutting in brush, thatd be my number one painting tip.

If you want a builder .. Buy builders bog (builder in a can)
If you need a carpenter buy no more gaps
( carpenter in a tube )
Im a professional painter & decorator (24 yrs)
As the last trade in on a Reno or a new build all other trades do my head in !

I based my renno around the free DIY courses scheduled at Bunnings for the most part.

Really helpful and worked out well
