Daine Laurie #237

He's a talent. Played a strong game last night, particularly in defense which was pleasing to see.
I was also enjoying him chirping away at the Penrith players all night, he was getting under the skin of a few as well.

Yeah. Always love the mouthing off

The one thing I don't like about him is that he always takes the tough carries. It's awesome that he does the tough stuff but sometimes let someone else take that tough carry.

He has been awesome for us.

Loving Daine, but there is something not right when he "chimes in" in that block play role, second pass out the back. Something is not working whether its timing, not running hard/fast enough but when he gets that pass he always seems to get swallowed by the defence easily.

I was a (low level) fullback, but I cant put my finger on what the problem is, if I hard to guess, he isnt moving fast enough at that moment.

It's getting better but it just seems like it's timing really. He is gelling more and more with our halves and getting more involved with the attack, starting to score regularly

Yeah I know exactly what you mean. Noticed it a few times too but not sure what’s causing it. Maybe he’s running the wrong line or simply off timing?

I’d say Daine is still learning the ropes of fullback as far as structural play goes.
He has instinct in spades and most of these types of players make a name for themselves off the back of that instinct and talent. He really hasn’t had a lot of recent game time at Fullback. A full game final year last year with Penrith in first grade and before that played the first game of the season for the reserves at Fullback.
Prior to that in 2019 Daine would be called up from the Flegg team to play 5/8 for the Panthers but with Caleb Aitkens at the back he didn’t play much fullback in senior grade.
His getting better every game.

Block plays are so 2019. They’re clunky and predictable if the halves don’t dig into the line. Defenders are just sliding off onto Laurie and he runs into a dead end.

Just cut out the staying down to milk a penalty.

If other teams are doing it then we're playing at a disadvantage not doing it ourselves

Still soft and I don't like it.

Agree, but if Momorovski is going to claim a crusher when nobody was near is neck and gains a penalty, then I can cop Laurie staying down when actual contact above the shoulders is made.

Absolutely, if the other team goes down that path you gotta follow.

I actually loved it, if the current rules are there to be taken advantage of, then do it imo. I really enjoyed Laurie having a laugh after he got the penalty. Smart play.

Opinion-based thing though of course.

I'm a bit torn too but it's not amateur sport. You cop a whack in the chops in dying stages of a game and a penalty will win you the game.. you don't stay down?
With 17000 red headed Leichhardtians demanding you do?

I'd prefer the Governing body to fix it so it is not happening.

I agree ...but if Douehi can find touch it is an easy way of getting out of our red one ...

If we were the most hated side in the NRL and won heaps of footy games I'd be over the moon

Not really, if you are unable to get up from a head knock you need a HIA off field.
