TRIPLE M caller Daniel Ginnane has backflipped on his promise to snub halfback Robert Lui in his call of Sunday's match between the Cowboys and Titans after the NRL complained to station management.
The broadcaster had vowed to not refer to Lui by name in protest to the NRL welcoming him back despite pleading guilty to assaulting his girlfriend during 2011 Mad Monday celebrations.
But that changed late yesterday after NRL officials spoke to Triple M management and the Cowboys phoned Ginnane to divulge sensitive details about the assault.
"The Cowboys reached out and called," Ginnane said last night. "They explained some confidential details of the Lui case. There were some details I weren't aware of. I knew it wasn't as clear and a cut-and-dried case.
"But in no way does this excuse Robert Lui. I don't take anything back. Everything I said I stand by. **I will call his name in commentary, but I won't do it with any level of excitement."**
It is understood the decision to call Lui's name was solely Ginnane's decision. Triple M content director Jamie Angel told The Daily Telegraph earlier this week he was backing his stance.
Last night, the NRL refused to directly answer if it had pressured the broadcaster, but it is understood it was angry about Ginnane's proposed ban.
"We raised the issue with Triple M and they told us the matter has been resolved," spokesman John Brady said.
