Dave Smith Quits as NRL CEO

Who'd want the wretched job-alleged TV deal cockups, player misbehaviour etc etc

Phil Rotfool that's who, he has been on his own agenda for the last couple of years denigrating anyone involved with the NRL!, NOWS the time to step up Beetroot head and put all you knowledge on the line along with you 2IC Bourbon Beccy Wilson!…......................

I could handle Gus getting it , but the one I would really like to see back is John Quayle. Has done well since he left league and is both a good business head and just as important knows and loves the game, unlike Smith.

The CEO doesn't need to know anything about the game. He needs to be an 100% administrator, who can surrounds himself with X amount of people who know the game, but have the clout to attract dollars to our game and enter new marketplaces.

RL has been stagnant in the past 15 years, and we need innovators who have the balls to make the tough decisions to see the game become a truly national competition and find ways to stimulate our neighbours in Asia etc.

Those currently involved in the game are not the answer… We need a bloke like Alan Joyce!

Couldn't do any worse that get someone with the brains of Peter Sterling. Also has passion and played the great game.

The ex AFL CEO would be great but has already come out on record he does not want the gig. Our loss.

Someone mentioned John Quayle as a possible replacement for Smith. Excellent administrator and good bloke too by all accounts

I tend to agree,i think its an advantage in the long run to be above the petty politics of any given sport.
I've knocked around Golf Clubs since i was Ten,the best Managers,Secretary/Managers,have been the ones that didn't play Golf.Their job was to run the Club not get involved with the endless pissing comps.,ego arguments, jealousies etc. that sports revolve around.

DAVE Smith has quit after a tumultuous three years as the boss of the National Rugby League.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal he is scheduled to inform staff at League Central headquarters and the game’s key stake holders at 10am today that he would be stepping down from the chief executive officer’s role.

NRL chairman John Grant will take over Smith’s responsibilities as interim CEO.

The independent commission will undertake a world wide recruitment search to identify a new leader before the start of next season.

10 minutes earlier he read the news of John Hopoate becoming the new Manly u/18s coach

Smith probably covered 60% of what was needed, but RL in Australia needs a BIG HITTER to stand up to the likes of Politis; Gould and there merry brigade of "whats in it for me". The person needs to have the balls to tear-up franchise agreements to those who dont want to comply with the direction the game needs to head.

The game has achieved little in the past 15 years, and is continually being dragged down by internal thinking, rather than being a progressive organisation.

Demetriou? He isnt a loss at all IMO. When he decided to pull the pin on the AFL job he was on the nose bigtime- shrouded in innuendo about dodgy dealings and protocol regarding the biggest drug scandal to ever hit Aussie sport. That is why he upped stumps from his multimillionddollar job and has gone to ground since that day and never been heard from. He could arguably be the shonkiest administrator that Aussie sport has ever seen TBH. He was a dab hand at sweeping major issues under the carpet during his tenure though so that personality trait alone would come in handy for the NRL top job.
We need someone that is extremely passionate about the game, not some big business Muppet who just talks spin constantly- we have had a few of those recently and the proof is there that they just don't succeed in growing our great game.

NRL is a very small world. You're either in it or you're not. Those that are not IMO wouldn't have a clue about what's needed- no clue of the demographics or the history. yes, you can hire people who know about this stuff but if you want the top job, you need to know both the game and the business.

New CEO's typically join companies that they know very little about.

But OK put someone in charge from within. There must be someone on your list who doesn't have some sort of bias, an agenda, or a skeleton in the closet.

Greenberg - OMG the list of shame just gets bigger
Richardson - he discloses everything - not
Quayle - ask the clubs that defected in SL war
Gould - loved and hated equally

They will all line up anyway to give the new boss their two bobs worth.

The NRL is big business. Treat it that way.

Agree with your assessment on both Greenburg and Richardson CQTIGER, they are shonky customers who hopefully won't get the gig. As far as Gould goes, whether he is loved or hated, there is no denying he knows the game intimately and is as passionate as they come (he for one would be keen to help out bush footy more than has been happening under previous administrators). He would do a good job IMO but his fondness for both Panthers and the Roosters would be cause for concern.
What did John Quayle do to upset the SL defecting clubs? I would of thought the clubs/players that joined SL did so out of personal greed more than anything. Maybe a better deal for players rights and conditions resulted from the SL 'war' but that was the only positive to come out of SL's almighty 'vision' that they crapped on about relentlessly.
