David Shillington

IT now appears all but certain Test prop David Shillington will part ways with the Canberra Raiders in spring after the uneasy relationship between the former club captain and key members of the Raiders' administration and coaching staff collapsed this week

In an odd turn of events, reformed Newcastle forward Willie Mason appears to have been the catalyst for Shillington to make the first decisive move, stepping down as a member of the Raiders' leadership group.

Mason has been outspoken in his criticism of what he describes as the self-centred attitude of some of the game's young stars – mostly referring to former Raider Josh Dugan and his good friend Blake Ferguson.

Speaking ahead of Ferguson's return to club duties next week, Mason suggested questions needed to be asked about the Raiders' culture and leadership.

Mason said it fell to the leaders at the Raiders to explain why the likes of Dugan, Ferguson and previously Todd Carney simply refused to adhere to even the most basic behavioural standards.

Mason singled out Shillington as one of the players who needed to take a tougher line with those players who fail to meet the expectations required.

While Shillington refused to discuss what he described as "in-house matters", it is believed Mason's raw comments stung him. Shillington was reportedly furious his leadership had been brought into question given he had led a group of senior Canberra players into several meetings with coach David Furner and members of the Raiders' front office, demanding sterner action be taken in dealing with the wayward pair.

Friends with Mason since their days as teammates at the Roosters, Shillington is believed to have contacted him, keen to clarify the perception others have of what has been happening in Canberra.

Despite claims to the contrary, The Weekend Australian has learned the Brisbane Broncos are interested in securing Shillington's services next season -- provided he comes at the right price.

Should we be looking at him? Despite what the article says, I think he would be a good leader for the younger props coming through, especially since he has represented at the highest level. A two year deal at a reasonable price would be nice.

No way we could afford him. I think we are getting rid of players to just be able to keep our young guns.

He would have to seek a release if he were to sign with us, where as if he signed with Broncos he would not need a release due to the terms of his contract

Shillo is a good bloke and i dont mind him but i dont think we have the $$$$

Amazes me how teams like Sharks and Doggies can stay under the cap with so many signings and big name players.
Not to mention the Bunnies and we always seem to be broke.
Dont think Benji and Robbie are draining our $$$ that much ..

Shillington is massively overrated IMO. Doesn't seem to have an ounce of mongrel in him at all. Front rowers shouldn't speak like they are from the Royal Family like Shillo does, they need a bit more of the DUH factor in 'em. No thanks.

I was just reading the coke zero rumors about Shillington wanting out, which I was going to make a post about. I say yes, we could do with his no nonsense approach to being a bookend. Will compliment our team quite well with Woods and co. Doesn't seem to be an attention seeker, just a hard worker.

Tick yes from me.

It's actually quite easy when you don't have any dead wood and aren't topping up other club's caps. I reckon if you took that out of our cap we'd have in excess of 1million spare. 1.5 with benji included.

It is all BS

He was just on Grandstand , he spoke to Blake Ferguson and all is sweet

He quit the leadership group with Berrigan to concentrate on playing better a few months ago

Takes it forward pretty well, thats all he needs to do, and really all he does.
I wouldnt mind another prop. but as mentioned I think we cannot afford him and were done for recruiting for '14 anyway

I don't mind him as a player but I think we need to get rid of players rather than be buying more. A beast of a 2nd rower would be a different matter and even then I think we should be careful.

They say hes on $500,000 a year, & hes not worth that.

The Salary Cap in 2014 will be 6.3 Million, 2015 6.55 Million, and 2016 7 million and your saying Shillington, an Australian rep players, isn't worth $500,000…....
If we signed him for $500,000 next year he'd be taking up 8% of our salary cap space....

He's on the downhill slope now. Pass.

Get another decent up and coming front rower with plenty of years in him and a good impact back rower.
