Defence on tries analysis, with a few ref howlers

**Try 1 01:48**
Lead-up: next to nothing to comment about, Eels’ first set.
1-1 – bad line shape, Woods (3) is up, Idris (2) is back, Nofo (1) is too far in-field. Moses (4) was marker and he follows across, but unfortunately he gives up on the play and Ma’u is able to press the line before passing out to Gutherson.
1-2 – Nofo (1) is 12m infield, I have no idea what he thinks he is doing, this is not an open side and there are PLENTY of cover defenders here. In fact with McIlwrick working across it’s still 4-on-4.
1-3 – Nofo (1) adjusts to the pass and tries to hit Gutherson, but he’s not fast enough and the ball gets away to Radradra. Notice how Woods and Idris (2) are standing on top of each other, Woods and MMc are sliding, Idris and Nofo are up-and-in. Bad bad bad bad bad, you have to all do the same thing. But Nofo should not be here, he should be staying on his man. It ends up that (2) is Jennings, he pops through on the other side, Semi runs down the sideline and Jennings is in support.
This is all Nofo’s mistake, the other players are made to try and cover. Nofo gets 2.0 SUUs.

Lead up: Tigers on attack, 5th tackle Moses decides to pass to the wing, Naiqama gets trapped and puts in a grubber against the run, gets a repeat set. On tackle 3 Moses hits Aloiai in a bit of traffic, Aloiai drops it on contact with the defence and it’s his fault. Brown hits Matagi on a fast hit-up, ET makes a great legs tackle but gets penalised because as he rolls away Matagi has already placed the ball down before he even gets to his feet properly (2-0). Fox commentators saying here they don’t know what ET is supposed to have done.
2-1 - Tackle 2, Eels only use one hitup via Jennings before spreading it wide. This is such bad numbering, Lawrence has been drawn to the dummy runner which isn’t the bad part (MMc covering also on his inside), but if you count Lawrence, JLJ, Suli they are looking at 3 Eelsplayers… and there are two more attackers on the far right. That’s a two-man overlap from a set line on Tackle 2.
2-2 – I think the mistake here is Naiqama tries to come in and snuff out the attack, but he’s too far from Gutherson. JLJ, Suli are both sliding, Naiqama tries to force the issue. Again I think it’s a mistake to not slide if your inside cover is sliding too. Ends up Suli has to try and make the covering tackle on Auva’a, which he does not. It was his man though, Suli not totally lacking of blame.
2-3 – really disappointed by this cover, Tedesco and JLJ arrive in plenty of time and Auva’a makes a sort of awkward step, but neither of them get any decent contact on him.
SUU – Naiqama 1.0, Suli 0.5, Lawrence 0.5, JLJ 0.5, Tedesco 0.5\. Team effort.

Lead-up: Tigers had all the ball and momentum, they opted not to take the 2 points 25 out next to the posts, they do get a repeat set but on the following set Tedesco bobbles JLJ’s decent kick that lands 1m out. Eels are really struggling here, they give us the ball back 40m out but we run it 5th and Suli gets caught with the ball (ET to JLJ to Suli). Gutherson takes a good run, Eels shift left and Jennings gets a cut-out, the defence scrambles but he cuts in-field and beats 3 (Nofo, Idris, Liddle).

Notice here without bringing the FB into play Eels have already created an overlap just by running across field and bring our defence in. Naiqama (1) is looking at 3 players. Tak is going to step inside Suli and JLJ is not pushing up hard enough.
3-2 – this is just horrible, what can you say? Suli and JLJ BOTH beaten by Takairangi’s single inside step, when really Tak should have drawn and passed, he’s got 3-on-1 on his outside. MCK is very lazy in pushing across here, Tak is going to run through that hole and put in a kick.
3-3 – Sue is the one that pressures Tak in the end, but he gets a kick away. The Eels outside backs overrun the Tigers. I gotta say Tedesco is out of position here, I know he can only do so much and he’s not going to cover a kick to the corner, but it’s not as if Eels spread it quickly, Jennings jinked across and Tak stepped inside, Tedesco had enough time to move across field to follow the football. Considering it’s Sue that moves on Tak, Tedesco is way out of frame until the last moment.

Suli gets 0.5 for being stepped by Tak but frankly he’s also thinking about the 3 guys on his outside. MCK 1.0 for not pushing across and Tedesco 0.5 for not being closer to the kick.

Lead-up: Tigers withstand the expectedly energetic Eels kickoff set, defuse the kick, decent set but Moses kicks on 4th and it’s a real shoddy one, he looks to kick it inside-out but it tracks straight to Gutherson 13 m out, no kick-chase (4-0). Eels make it back to the 50 on tackle 2.
4-1 – Staggered line but Tigers have the numbers here, 5-5\. FB is not involved, so they haven’t brought an extra man in.
4-2 – Oh dear how many times do Tigers fans need to watch this awful defensive shape? Moera draws JLJ (1), Aloiai (2) irons out Tak but Corey Norman has just been put into miles of space. It’s 4th tackle, I get that Naiqama (4) is defending the kick at this moment, but JLJ has been totally suckered by the dummy run and Suli (3) is holding his position; the deep pass gives Norman an eternity to pick his mark.
4-3 – Suli (1) takes Norman, Auva’a steams into the gap. Naiqama (2) has totally ballsed this up, he should have come forward as soon as he realised Suli was getting isolated. Instead he holds his mark on the 20, then actually backs off a few paces. At this stage I don’t care about the possible kick, when you are beaten man-for-man here you have to follow your centre’s decision. The fact that Auva’a beats Naiqama on the inside, draws Tedesco and puts Hoffman over – Naiqama has taken absolutely nobody. And look at (3), Moera is covered by 3 Tigers, JLJ does not need to go in here, then he misses the cover attempt on Auva’a.
This is super-simple stuff, decoy runner with an out-pass, our line was more or less set with man-on-man, but our 3rd-in takes the decoy and the winger does not match the centre = gaps galore. If you can’t defend this you will be beaten every week, because all teams can do it and they will probe your edges all day. Notice how Eels don’t even wait for special circumstance, they attack the edge on any tackle with any numbering, and if not for some poor execution they could have punch through us another 7-8 times in the match with these same plays.
Naiqama gets 2.0 here for bad positioning, JLJ gets 2.0 for the misread and no cover. I can’t really fault Suli here, he does what he can with his defensive support.

Eels half-stuff this, they have us on the ropes but Radradra throws an errant pass from DH, it ends up with Hoffman who gets tackled, then Alvaro takes a hitup and we are almost set. Eels spread right and we easily cover the move, Tak makes the world’s slowest PTB and mouths off at his own team.

So overall 5 tries, 3 left and 2 right. No specific focus, Eels run left or right and we misread. 9 players got SUU here, you can’t even specifically point the finger at one bloke, which is really depressing. JLJ was the worst culprit 3.5, Naiqama 3.0 after multiple errors, Nofo 2.5 (based on the first try horror).

BTW have a look at this, the no-penalty against Matagi 73rd minute. He’s not at marker, he retreats about 5 metres then affects the tackle. Tigers rush the 5th tackle option, Moses inside to ET who juggles, pops it to JLJ who drops it.

Also tell me also how this is ever NOT a penalty. I don’t care if he slid up off Tedesco’s bootlaces, you cannot make neck or head contact in any situation with your arm.

Great analysis. To me, this is the biggest problem with the Tigers at the moment. This is the play that gets us over and over again, on both sides of the field but especially our right side defence.
Even when this doesn't lead to a try against us, the other team always makes big metres before being run down. The momentum kills us. Man up one on one in defence on the edges and I reckon we'll start winning a heap more games.

Great posts. Thanks for the effort put into the analysis.
Thanks again for this stuff, good analysis. Surely the coaching staff work on these things and point out defensive mistakes as above with video reviews etc. I can't for the life of me understand how this stuff still hasn't been fixed, especially with players on the edge rushing up and leaving unmarked men a rails run down the sideline. During Taylor's tenure there was a lot of time to fix these deficiencies but it just never happened, and none of us will ever know why..
Anyway, new coach in and hopefully these things will start to be ironed out fairly quickly.

JT couldn't fix it, time will tell if Cleary can fix it or, if as has been suggested, there needs to be a clean out of players who cannot be coached out of their errors.
