Des Hasler to join Bulldogs in 2013 Adrian Proszenko
October 7, 2011 - 10:35AM

Canterbury officials have snuck under the guard of their Manly counterparts and secured the services of Des Hasler.

In a stunning twist in the tug of war for Hasler's services, the two-time premiership-winning coach will head to Belmore in 2013 after serving out the final year of his Sea Eagles deal.

Manly officials were convinced they had their man long term after tabling a three-year extension which, with bonuses, was worth more than $1 million per season. However, the Herald has learned that the Bulldogs have responded by upping their initial $750,000 per year offer and that Hasler has agreed to terms. The Bulldogs will call a press conference for tomorrow to announce the news.

Advertisement: Story continues below Following the Sea Eagles' civic reception and parade from Brookvale Oval to the Novotel in Manly yesterday, the team joined sponsors, board members and selected guests for lunch at Le Kiosk at Shelley Beach. The intimate gathering of 60 guests, who paid $1000 for the privilege, got their money's worth when emcee John Gibbs interviewed Hasler about his future plans. Hasler again confirmed he would remain at Brookvale for 2012, but when Gibbs pressed him about his intentions beyond that, the coach channelled Tom Cruise's character from the hit movie Jerry Maguire, declaring: "Show me the money!".

While Manly has done that, so too have Canterbury as Hasler's stocks have risen following Sunday's premiership triumph. Only Wayne Bennett - on a deal reportedly worth as much as $10 million over four years - will be able to command more once Hasler joins the Bulldogs.

I say sucked in Manly. After so many years poaching other players with big money, you lose your coach. Karma man, karma.

This is bizarre. So both Hasler AND Dymock will be lame duck coaches next year?

Suck eggs to Manly, thought they had him with a handshake deal!

Bulldogs will be dangerous under his stewardship.

Who have Manly been poaching on big money??? Lots of their squad have been with Manly, and only Manly, for years.

Back on topic - it's a good pickup by the Bulldogs. Something that Hasler will bring to the club is a long term plan. That's something they've never had. They always seem to play it year by year, buying players here and there, but never having a long-term strategy.

I bet Dymock is feeling a little bit useless right now haha. Will be a weird year for Manly knowing Des will be thinking about 2013…

I'm really surprised Hasler has made this choice. It seemed to me that he was on the way to being one of those coaches who stays with the same team for years and years, like Bennett with the Broncos. He spent most of his playing career with the Sea Eagles so it made sense that he'd do the same as a coach. The man could have ended up being the club's greatest ever coach but it seems he's thrown that away all for a few hundred thousand dollars more.

As for Dymock, he must be feeling as bad as Kevin Moore did right now. They haven't even given him a chance and made it clear that he was NEVER part of their plans for the future.

Ray Brown - Les Boyd - John Dorahy.
I will never forget.

Dymock has a year to prove his worth. The coaching merry-go-round appears move a lot faster now, so a good season with the Dogs won't be in vain.

Regrettable imo.
Link up with his young mate Hodkinson though.

He's a good coach, I reckon he's under rated also.
He's up there with the Bellamys and ( imo over rated ) Wayne Bennet.

See how the dogs go in coming seasons, don't think there'll be any thing impressive.
He'll miss premiership winning Manly.

I wonder how badly this will effect Manly? Apparently, 4-5 players claimed they would leave if the club failed to re-sign Hasler. I wonder if it was just a threat, or whether it will become a reality, I'd happily take on board a few of their players (providing they're not grubs).

On the other hand, this is a huge coup for the Dogs. Once again, Todd Greenberg has been able to snare another a big, off-season signing. Good on him, he's undoubtedly cleaned up the off-field culture at the Dogs and it now seems an attractive club to go to. You can only commend him for what he's achieved for the club.

You really need to build a bridge, Tommy - that was how long ago? Different era, different administration. Besides, Wests did exactly the same thing to Canterbury when they bought Langmack, Gillespie and Thomas all in the one year. During the past decade, heaps of other teams have been poaching players on big money moreso than Manly, including the Tigers!

The players are with Des, and Des is against the board, he hates em for punting Zorba…why he's going.
LOL....they got a few days to celebrate....bahahahaha
Hopoate
Hasler...
...stay tuned, thers more to come

Cherry-Evans maybe? We sure could use a good halfback :stuck_out_tongue:
All this because of Zorba? And here's me thinking no one even took any notice of the bloke! lol

I don't agree with Bennett being overrated. He's definitely a man manager, and gets the best out of his players. I still refuse to rate the 2010 Dragons team as the best side on paper. Bennett picked the right men based on their ability and made a champion team.

I will say Hasler is probably the the best coach based on a recent track record (obviously excluding Bellamy due to salary cap breaches.) He is a fantastic identifier and nurturer of talent and the Dogs will benefit from his experience. It may also see more quality local Dogs juniors graduate into FG, which they're severely lacking of late.

I think Noel Cleal's contributions to Manly are underestimated…he is the one at Manly who had an eye for young talent....I understand Cleal is following Hasler to the Dogs....

After seeing the Magpies on the late 70's and early 80's get torn apart by Manly it is AWESOME to see Karma taking a big bite out of their arse now ( 4 days after they win a premiership) :roll

Im so surprised that hasler has gone to the doggies, spose he has done the business at Manly, 3 GF's and 2 premierships, job done, can improve his rep doing it somewhere else

He's certainly one of the best coaches in the game today, right up there with Wayne and Bellamy. It will be interesting to see who replaces him at Manly and what he can do with the Dogs.

1 guy who I think would appreciate a side like Manly would be Matt Elliott

Yeah, he might FINALLY be able to win a finals game, he's only coached 9 and a half seasons of NRL football, with some pretty talented rosters and hasn't managed to do it.
