Did the NRL Board see the 40,388?

I have been lambasted by many on this Forum for my claim that the NRL and Wests Tigers need to learn the importance of good marketing to the success of any business.

In the so-called rugby league heartland of western Sydney, the NRL top brass needs to come down from their lofty high horse and see what is really going on out in the real world. The A-League has been putting in a big effort with the school-children, the prospective adult fans and families by involving them in the football club's workings. The crowd at the Sydney local derby, which is the biggest club football crowd other than the SOO game and the NRL Grand Final shows they are doing something right. This follows a similar crowd at the Melbourne local derby.

The Western Sydney Wanderers have outgrown Parramatta Stadium before their second season started, because they have sold out all of their home games for the current season and need a bigger stadium to maintain their growth.

I am sure Wests tigers would like to be in a similar position!

I am sure they would too…but until they(WT and the NRL) revamp their approach to engaging fans and members they will see the A-League bullet train fly past them before they know it...and Shinji Ono will be at the wheel!

Really? You were honestly "lambasted" for saying the NRL and WT need to learn the importance of good marketing to be successful?

I'd really love to see where anybody specifically refutes that claim.

If there was only 2 Sydney NRL clubs they'd easily fill ANZ stadium when they play each other.

Don't forget this is a summer sport - fans of NRL and AFL and all Sydney teams combined like these teams. There's much more unity when there's only one comp at a time

Agreed, no big deal. Me and my family are the same - we follow FC but would never go to a soccer game in preference to a WT game if the seasons coincided - most of our friends the same.

Rugby League had its chance to be Super… 18years on and there is still 7 Teams playing against each other in Sydney?!

But there is always the Western Corridor...

Bahahaha

I would put it more down to the biggest junior sport in the country getting it's crap together after 40 odd years of dismal failings. That and only two teams in Sydney.

Eith way it's soccer so I just don't care tbh

Until the A-League has 7 teams in the Sydney basin and plays during the winter, there is no basis for comparison, and I'm pretty sure I can speculate reasonably correctly the NRL would have the A-League covered.

I look forward to 40k crowds each week…..and TV ratings similar to NRL....until then...pfft

Agree , lets see what crowds they draw when the Wanderers aren't on top of the table

Went to this game as my son carried the Hyundai banner onto the field at half time, what an atmosphere? Great game as well. The family did not attend an NRL game this year, although we did attend 2 Tah games that were fantastic. The problem with league, is it can be boring. By this, I mean hit it up for 4 and kick. Our family miss Tim Sheens and everything he brought to NRL and the Weststigers. Go Weststigers!

I don't understand how you can find League boring but think the Waratahs are good to watch. Each to their own I guess.
Still can't bring myself to follow Football with any kind of passion. It's alright to play but waiting for a goal or 2 in 90 minutes is a pretty average use of time. Must just be the atmosphere

Without getting into a slanging match, I've been reading and contributing to this forum for 10 years. Union, afl, football, league, nfl and even international rules are all good games. I will leave you youngsters with this thought, I have never witnessed a bad sport, only a sport I don't understand. Go Weststigers!

I can imagine the outrage from the Telecrap pundits (the guys whose company has a massive stake in the A League) if the NRL pulled 16k for the only live sport in the State on a beautiful Friday night

I think it's high time the NRL realise that having 8 teams in Sydney isn't a feasible way to take the game forward. I'd go as far as to say 2, maybe 3 teams in Sydney is all that's required. Look at the NFL and NBA. Huge cities like New York only have two teams.

To do it, I'd rebrand the lot of them. Give some set entities an opportunity to take up the franchises in other places (Perth, Adelaide, NZ2, Bris2, Central QLD, Central Coast). Hell there is enough clubs right now to do it.

Cowboys
Broncos
Titans
Manly > Central Coast
Sydney to remain as Sydney
Panthers/Tigers merger > West Sydney Wildcats? Whatever…
Sharks > Adelaide
Souths > Perth
NZ2 new entity
Dragons > Bris2
Bulldogs > Central QLD
Parramatta > fold?

Either way it's not feasible if they want to move forward. We can keep the historic teams in the NSW cup and hell even bring back the really historic sides for it if you want. Newtown, Glebe and what have you. Balmain, Maggies, Bears, Illawarra... all of em.

If they don't want to do it. Tough.

If that's the attitude you take, 1 city teams like the NFL then why are you simultaneously pushing for a second brisbane team?

Also, why the Tigers Panthers merger? we have enough problems already. Do a parra penrith merger if you're so keen.

Problem is it's hard to enact, very little incentive to merge or move. NRL can't just sit around throwing 10 20 million at every club to do something.
