Do we need more officials controlling NRL games?

Good God no! The ones we have now can't even get it right. I think the history of the game has shown that the more officials we have, the more mistakes there are made.[/quote

Spot on Flip…

Look I'd like to see something trialled just once

From tryline to tryline I'd like to see a line every metre

No excuses then for offsides , forward passes being missed everything

Sounds like most of it is just an experiment in dumbness.

Back to one Ref for me.

Two video refs ok - as well as try adjudication, I'd like to see them advise the "one Ref" of keeping the defensive team back 10 metres (the offside is killing the attack and the number of tries) - not 6 or 8 but 10 Metres.

After the 2014 season:
Obviously the Ref also needs to be advised on players walking - sometimes 2 metres off the mark (Melbourne and Souffs are a good example). They also need to stop players that are playing the ball pushing and interfering with the marker (Inglis does this every time).

Might even get a good game - more tries and sharp honest defence.

And I can assure you it will only be trialled that one time imagine as a spectator a line every metre….Yuck.

However your idea makes perfect sense other than the cosmetic application so what I would suggest is surely we have the technology now where a replay screen where the lines could be super imposed so that upon review and for the people watching at home on TV we could get that 1 line every metre thing to work for tries off forward passes and for kick tries whether they are onside or offside. The other thing about the forward pass that should change for easier decision making is changing the rule where if it floats forward after initially being passed behind the imaginary line this should also be forward.

It should be judged from point A(passer) to point b(catcher)to make for easier adjudication.for eg if it was passed on the 20 metres out from the oppositions tryline but caught 19 metres out then its obviously 1 metre forward but the current rule where it could of travelled a metre bacward before travelling a metre forward makes it too grey for the decision maker in the booth.

Kind of like the imaginary(but extemely accurate)line the NFL uses for its viewers to work out how many yards to the first down.We should use the little hash marks the yanks use as a marker or a guide to the imaginary line.

Short answer, no. Ten officials means ten interpretations and more stoppages.

If anything needs looking at its the wrestle, the ruck and the need to move away from the unsustainable game that encourages 125kg players running at each other at full speed against set defenses then subbing them off when they fatigue every 10 minutes. The balance is all wrong and injuries are becoming more frequent. The entertainment value of the game has suffered, talent is less rewarded and every set ends in a cross field kick for the winger.

Maybe this belongs in the unpopular opinions thread, but I reckon the refereeing issues are exacerbated by commentators who spend most of their time dwelling on the refs calls. The refereeing was appealing in the 80s and prior. Watch some old games on YouTube and you'll see what I mean. There just wasn't 20 camera angles to scrutinise every call.

i think it might help somewhat.

will lead to LESS stopages, thats exactly why there are more refs. So that they have more eyes and need to go upstairs less often. at least thats why theyre trying this.

but the easiest solution is just have a coaches challenge, puts all the pressure on the coach not the video ref.

they can even have tonnes of people dedicated to watching different live angles to see whether they should challenge or not.

I think this could make the ruck a lot more consistent.

On the try line though, I have my doubts.

No more officials. The game doesn't need more KFC breaks and interruptions. Make decisions stick with them and let the game flow.

you say that now, but wait until one of those decisions is wrong, they dont go to the video ref and we get kicked out of the finals or lose a crucial game in the season.

I like having in goal refs.
I've never liked the 2 referee system.
And having 4 touchies is just ridiculous.
Go back to how it used to be.
1 Main referee.
2 Touchies.
2 In-goal referees.
