Why live in the past?
I think drawing a division between the "Wests" and the "Tigers" DOES hurt the club. There's a reason that the two clubs merged - they were no longer viable in the environment they inhabit. There's a reason that "Wests" and "Tigers" were selected as the best parts of the two clubs.
"Balmain" is a small suburb, populated heavily with advertising executives who couldn't give a toss about rugby league and whose children are too precious to play.
"Wests" is boundless. When whitey arrived here (in places like Balmain) he headed west to where the fertile plains were and started this modern incarnation of Australia. If you keep heading west you'll eventually circle the world.
"Magpie" is a smallish bird, which despite theories of extreme intelligence, draws neither fear nor inspiration from humanity. They are common and plain. In addition, the Collingwood Magpies are amongst the top ten most profitable sporting teams in the world.
"Tiger" is a sleek, jungle killing beast. It is graceful and ruthlessly predatory. The tiger is on the verge of extinction because it has been hunted down for the beauty of its skin, and the rumour that eating its penis revivifies a flaccid sex drive in men.
Now lets just say you had to create a new team, a business no less, and you wanted to attract the most interest with the view to establishing a dominant sports club and a distinctive and powerful brand. Would you choose "Balmain Magpies" or "Wests Tigers", considering these are the two options??
Now there is a great relevance to preserving some traditions. Tradition for tradition's sake is not good enough. There has to be some advantage to people in the present and future else its a tradition that should have died.
In this case, it is my firm belief that playing a quarter of the home games at Campbelltown, a quarter at Leichhardt, naming the team the Wests Tigers and combining the common colour of black with the white of Wests and the orange of Balmain is perfect. These are all traditions that continue to serve well.
Personally I think they should get rid of that magpie on the jersey. It causes rifts and delusions and it was only put there as a dummy for Magpies supporters, who now spit it when they feel threatened. Sorry but Balmain and the Magpies are dead. Its the Wests Tigers, and we should be celebrating new life rather than mourning death.
Perhaps the karma alluded to is that disharmonious fans deserve a disharmonious team. We should play in the Wests Tigers jersey on heritage round.
Otherwise the teams can split, and Balmain can become the Meriton Tigers and the Magpies can become a feeder club for Easts.
