I live in Brizzy and have been supporting the tigers & magpies since mid sixties so when we had to merge I loved it, but one thing that's erked me was the lack if effort to keep our strip traditional, if we kept the big 'V' and big tigers head in black and gold with white thrown in and kept it the same forever then kids growing up following the weststigers would identify themselves with the strip. The Dolphins had a chance to target Redcliffe and an awesome strip but a huge fail for me. Bennett holding up the new Dolphins jersey with KINGS on the front looked like a basketball shirt. I would not connect with that rubbish.
There is enough merchandise to sell without changing playing strips every year too.... Just change the sponsors name in the back shoulders and sleeves. Long live traditions and chivalry!
If i lived in the area and was considering switching allegiance to a new team such as the Dolphins I'd find it tough given that the name holds no regional connection. Surely Moreton Bay Dolphins makes much more sense? Moreton Bay is a huge area that would draw so many fans in if there was a naming connection.
But Redcliffe is still part of Brisbane ......many will be Brisbane fans or if they can't stand the Broncos like a fair few of the ex BRL fans Titans or Cows .....
When Redcliffe goes under ......and they will .....Mr Vlandy's and Abdo will have a lot to answer for
Will they ? I gotta say none of those names exactly scream “exciting new franchise” . They straight up should be called the Brisbane Dolphins . Or north Brisbane , or even SEQ , and have some link to the crushers .
Moreton Bay anything seems like a fad to me .
Isn’t North Lakes akin to what’s going on in Narellan ? It’s not like there’s not a huge region to tap into . I don’t think Moreton Bay is the answer . I understand why they just went with Dolphins .
They could call themselves whatever they want ......they will fail .....
The NRL would have been far better off surrounding Brisbane with sides from Ipswich , Toowoomba and Sunshine Coast ...breaking that Brisbane link and letting the areas attract their own local fans
Fans that are still linked to the old BRL clubs are probably still supporting their post Broncos sides or Titans /Cowboys fans
Most people who were still linked to the BRL clubs post Broncos were or are so appalled by the way the Broncos treated them they hate the Broncos .....2 clubs that were linked as feeder clubs to the Broncos (Wests and Toowoomba ) no longer exist as Qld cup clubs
That’s a fair point . The reality is though , that all 3 bids were tied to existing QRL clubs . It was the only way any of them could secure enough support and funding . I thought Redcliffe were getting 5k plus to thier games even as a feeder team .
It’s really about how well they can engage the northern suburbs , and get people to look past existing links . There’s also a lot of expats from other regions , looking for a local team to raise thier kids on not called the broncos . I think a few on here ditched the tigers for them recently.
The Brisbane bombers entry ceo at the time , made a point about the fact the team had to be in central Brisbane as a viable alternate to the broncos , and any regional based team would just alienate the rest of Brisbane . It seems he may have had a point .
What the broncos did to the crushers is garbage . Really this all should have happened 25 years ago .
But you are asking Brisbane fans to support another Brisbane club ........
Plenty of us in/around Brissie hate the Broncos.
Moreton Bay is a massive area, not a fan of them simply being 'The Dolphins'.
But it is still part of Brisbane ...and a lot of the old time fans from the old BRL won't support Redcliffe .....I think if they called themselves Sunshine Coast ...yeah maybe
Redcliffe / Moreton Bay isn't an incentive /attractive proposition ....
