Dragons clash at SCG to mark 50th Anniversary of '63 Grand Final
One of the most anticipated blockbuster matches of the 2013 season draw for Wests Tigers will be the Round 6 Heritage clash against St George-Illawarra Dragons.
To be played on Sunday, April 14, at 3pm, it is estimated 37,000 seats will be available for the match despite the current reconstruction of the Sydney Cricket Ground.
It will be the first time Wests Tigers have played their Heritage Round clash against the Dragons at the SCG after playing South Sydney at the historic ground in the past in one of the NRL’s feature rounds.
The match marks the 50th Anniversary of the 1963 Grand Final between Western Suburbs Magpies and St George Dragons.
Although St George won 8-3, the match is well remembered for photographer John O’Gready’s shot of rival captains Norm Provan (Dragons) and Arthur Summons (Magpies) walking off the muddy ground arm in arm.
Known as ‘The Gladiators’ photo, the image has been used by the NRL for the premiership trophy since 1982.
In the book ‘Clouds of Dust, Buckets of Blood’, Summons recalls the moment he embraced Provan after the siren, unaware the photo was being taken.
“It was a fleeting moment. And I wasn’t congratulating him, either. I wasn’t being a good sport,’’ Summons reflected.
“I was pretty dirty about losing. I said something like ‘You got away with that one. You shouldn’t have won it’.”
Wests Tigers advises Members who have taken the Allianz Stadium packages that they will have a reserved seat for the Round 6 Heritage clash against St George-Illawarra. More details on this game will be provided when possible.
