St George Illawarra prop Trent Merrin has been released from the NSW Origin squad as Blues coach Ricky Stuart moves towards finalising his line-up for next Wednesday night's series decider in Brisbane.
Merrin will return to the Dragons to prepare for Monday night's match against Canberra, while a decision is expected to be made by Sunday on whether he is joined by teammate Beau Scott.
Scott, who played the first two matches of last year's Origin series, is on standby for injured Manly secondrower Glenn Stewart.
If Stewart succumbs to a knee injury, Scott is expected to start in the second-row, with the NSW bench to comprise Tony Williams, Luke Lewis, Ben Creagh and Anthony Watmough.
