Reports on this game have been rather sketchy, it's not surprising considering that the Wests Tigers game was scheduled for the same time slot eliminating this game to a non event, I thought when viewing the NSWRL.com site that I was going to get a radio streaming event through the net thus avoiding what was happening in the NRL.
Fans were informed the following day that there were a few undesirable episodes during the game at North Sydney and we were happy that action(s) were taken against the Bears player, now the National press has take an interest.
For all the good things that Rugby League does out there it takes just 0.01% of players etc to bring us down.
How much publicity is a former National GayFL player caught on cocaine charges recently getting in comparison.

It is unfortunate without doubt.

Upon arriving at the ground the word was already out amongst supporters that the Bears intended to drag the game into a brawl at one point.

Than again this is a side coached by Wayne Lambkin who tried to start a fist fight with Blake Lazarus at half time in their first encounter at T.G. Milner Oval this season. The attitudes of such a low human being surely would have some effect on his playing group

THIS is the explosive photograph that is likely to be used to try to prove North Sydney's Mitchell Stevens bit the ear of an opponent – a charge the Bears winger will defend.

The Herald has obtained the photo of Balmain-Ryde forward Jason Schirnack, taken immediately after the game on Sunday that was marred by the alleged bite, which will be tendered as evidence at Stevens's judiciary hearing.

That hearing has been adjourned for a week, to be held next Wednesday, after a dramatic change of heart by the Bears player yesterday.

Stevens had initially informed the NSWRL that he would plead guilty to the charge, but yesterday he changed his plea to not guilty.

That also led to a change from his club, which had originally sacked Stevens on the grounds that he would plead guilty. Now that he has altered his plea, Bears boss Greg Florimo said yesterday the club would stand by him for the moment, although he had been stood down.

"He's adamant he did not bite him," Florimo said.

Schirnack, who is unable to have plastic surgery because the portion of the ear bitten off was never found, did not wish to comment last night, given the hearing is still to be held, but the photograph clearly shows a bloodied wound on his left ear.

It is understood Stevens had originally planned to plead guilty but claim the bite was accidental. But after legal advice told him he would be unable to do so, he decided to plead not guilty and is set to argue he was wearing a mouthguard at the time of the offence. There were also suggestions that a guilty plea might also open up Stevens to criminal charges, something Schirnack has not yet ruled out pressing ahead with.

NSWRL general manager Geoff Carr said the adjournment was agreed to after talks yesterday between Stevens’s legal representative and the judiciary chairman, Bob Abood, and prosecutor James McLeod, even though Balmain-Ryde’s general manager, Paul Sironen, described the one-week delay as "disappointing".

"There was a plea sent in [on Tuesday] within the [allowed] time," Carr said. "But there was confusion about the plea, through lack of advice, and the players’ naivety about the rules.

"On consideration of the seriousness of the charge, he made an application to revisit the plea."

They've got to start handing out some ridiculous punishments to deter this sort of thing. They're only giving blokes four weeks at the top level…

I got bitten on the arm in a game a few years back. The bastard drew blood and the ref didn't send off or even sin bin him. Needless to say he got some special attention from the boys for rest of the game. I managed to get in a cheap or three to level the playing field.

While I never got bitten, my position was always simple. If the officials didnt do anything about certain incidents, I would settle it myself… I got hit high with an elbow one day and the offending player went back 5m into the line of defence. The tuff bloke couldnt even stand at marker... I looked at the Ref and he did nothing, so I didnt even play the ball, I just threw it down on the ground and walked over to the guy and dropped him... The ref was blowing his whistle before I even got to him saying "dont you do it... dont you do it...". I got 6 weeks for that, but the BRL never liked me that much

You've got to settle it Watto, otherwise they think they get away with it and some other poor bastard cops it.

There was another team in our comp who had a sack grabber, and he got away with it until he was deliberately coat-hangered, had his head taken off and missed 12 weeks via injury.

Its such a weird thing to do to someone…biting that is.

It's surprising how regularly it happens. He should get a couple of years minimum for that, it's doine a lot of damage

EXCLUSIVE

NORTH SYDNEY fullback Mitchell Stevens claims he punched off - rather than bit off - part of the ear of Balmain Ryde forward Jason Schirnack in what is shaping as one of the most heated hearings in years.

The incident, which occurred in a NSW Cup encounter last Sunday, will go before the NSWRL judiciary on Wednesday night after Stevens changed his plea from guilty to not guilty. Schirnack claimed Stevens bit off a chunk of his ear, and his club is set to tender evidence, including photos and a doctor's report, supporting the allegation.

Speaking for the first time about the incident, Stevens denied the claim and said he decided to contest the charge after he was compared with infamous biters Mike Tyson and Newtown forward Frank ''Bumper'' Farrell, a distant relative.

''There is no doubt in my mind that I didn't bite him, I'd know if I bit someone's ear,'' Stevens told The Sun-Herald. ''My mouthguard was in all the time, you don't see my mouthguard come out at all. I had no blood around my mouth whatsoever.''

Stevens claimed the damage to Schirnak's ear was the result of a blow.

''People heard the punch throughout the entire ground, it was a solid blow,'' he said. ''When I saw the chunk out of his ear, I was like 'can you punch a piece of ear off?'''

Stevens said he was ''shocked'' by the biting allegation and claimed Schirnack was the aggressor in their stoush.

''He lashed out, maybe twice, and he hit me on the jaw,'' Stevens said. ''He gets up and plays the ball and we stood face to face. I'm not sure what happens in between there, but he grabs me by the jumper.

''I thought 'there's a fight here', so I punched him in the ear. He's sort of gone back a little bit. I've grabbed him, lifted his leg and tackled him onto the ground. When I was on the ground there was a whole bunch of players jumping on top of me.

''To protect myself I put a wrestling grappling move on him that you learn at footy training … When the fight was all over and I just got pulled up, I walked back and looked down on my arm. I had blood all down my right forearm from his left ear, from clenching [him]. The [referee] called us over. I heard people across from me saying 'look at your ear, he's bit ya!' He realised there was blood there and gone to the ref 'he's bitten me' … I was shocked that I was getting a biting call. I'd know if I bit someone.

''He didn't scream or struggle. If someone was getting bit on the ear - if it was me - I'd be trying to get away. At no stage was I close enough to the left side of his face to do a bite.''

The Sun-Herald has witnessed footage of the incident and obtained a letter from Tigers doctor Scott Burne, which concluded: ''It is my professional opinion that there is only one explanation for this wound … that his ear wound was caused by the opponent biting his ear …''

Stevens cited legal expenses, club advice and the opportunity to earn a 25 per cent reduction for an early guilty plea as reasons for not immediately contesting the charge. However, the 21-year-old changed his mind when the weight of the allegations hit home, fearing the stigma of being labelled a biter would forever tarnish his name.

''They started comparing me to Mike Tyson and 'Bumper' Farrell, who was actually my grandfather's godfather, so there's a slight relation there,'' Stevens explained. ''But I don't look like those blokes and carry myself like those blokes. I was pretty angry when I heard the Tigers staff and coach label me a disgrace. I'm hearing on the radio that I should be banned for life. I didn't think it was going to blow up this big.''

The game threatened to explode following the incident, Stevens claiming that Tigers players wanted retribution for the alleged bite. He said he was stunned that Schirnack wasn't cited for breaking the nose of Bears halfback Jarryd Hogan in an alleged high tackle. Asked if he tried to speak to Schirnack after the game, Stevens said: ''In the line I went to shake his hand and he said 'I'm not shaking your hand … Enjoy your suspension'.

''I basically told him to f–- off and walked away.''

However, it wasn't the end of the matter. Stevens claimed he bumped into several Tigers players at a nightclub in Cronulla on Friday night.

''Three of them approached me, individually, throughout the night, basically saying the same thing: 'We never take anything off the field, but your a dead c---, you better watch your back','' Stevens said. ''They said it wasn't the end of it because they were under the impression I bit him. All I can say is that I didn't.''

Bwahaha i will stand in for witness if need be.
When you know what was said and actually done, that entire article is a load of BS and Stevens is full of it. He is not the full quid.
The grub was running around on the field growling like a dog… and he had blood all over his mouth after the incident...
Seriously...what a nutjob!!

Did anyone see what happened there?

It was a high tackle.

The judiciary let him off without charge. The send off was harsh on the day.

I think Shaggy Suttor was realising he lost control from the moment the muppet biter wasn't sent

**Stevens fights to beat biting charge**
AAP Tue, 31 Aug 2010 19:47:45

North Sydney lower grader Mitchell Stevens will fight to clear his name of a biting charge at the NSWRL judiciary on Wednesday night.

Stevens, a fullback with the Bears in the NSW Cup competition, is alleged to have bitten off part of the ear of Balmain Ryde forward Jason Schirnack during an ugly brawl just over a week ago.

After initially pleading guilty as he prepared to throw himself at the mercy of the judiciary panel, Stevens will now fight the charge claiming the damage done to Schirnack's ear was the result of a punch and not a bite.

The Tigers will tender photos and a doctor's report as part of their submission, with Stevens facing a lengthy suspension - and even the possibility of a life ban - if found guilty.

In a newspaper report Stevens claimed he could not have bitten Schirnack as he was wearing a mouthguard throughout the incident.

Norths player Mitchell Stevens suspended for 10 weeks for biting rivals' ear
By Christian Nicolussi From: The Daily Telegraph September 02, 2010 12:00AM

NORTH Sydney winger Mitchell Stevens was suspended for just 10 weeks last night for biting a chunk out of an ear of an opposition player - despite arguing a fierce punch caused the horrific injury.

After a five-hour hearing, Stevens was found guilty of sinking his teeth into the left ear of Balmain's Jason Schirnack during a wild brawl at a NSW Cup game at North Sydney Oval on August 22.

The 21-year-old pleaded not guilty and said it was his fists that caused Schirnack to lose part of his ear, which plastic surgeons at Liverpool Hospital could not re-attach after the bloody game.

Stevens maintained his innocence afterwards and said "the truth does not always come out" before refusing to rule out an appeal.

Schirnack, whose left ear was still visibly scarred, came face to face with Stevens for the first time since the incident last night.

Schirnack, also 21, who played an NRL game with the Wests Tigers earlier this year, said he felt a "pinch" after he and Stevens wrestled.

"I just remember getting tackled, I tried to get a fast play-the-ball away and when I got up to play the ball he gave me a shove," Schirnack said.

"He hit me in the back of the head and then tackled me straight to the ground. That's when we started fighting.

"He was on top, I was on the bottom, everybody else came in and that's when I felt a pinch on the ear. I got up and noticed I was bleeding from the ear. It was like getting your ears pierced."

Stevens denied biting Schirnack and said the first he knew of the accusation was when Balmain players started complaining on-field.

His lawyer Les Nicholls questioned why Schirnack did not react immediately.

"Anybody who is a victim of biting wouldn't walk away 15m, talk to two trainers and then make a cry about it," Nicholls said. "You would be screaming and yelling and saying 'look what that bastard did to my ear'."

Nicholls even called on former world champion kickboxer Grant Barker as a witness who said he had seen a professional fighter lose part of his ear during a bout.

However, Balmain doctor Scott Byrne said there was no way a piece of ear could be removed by a punch.

"I challenge anyone to punch a piece of ear off," Byrne said. "In this case skin was missing and deeper layers of skin were missing, and that can't happen with a blunt trauma [or a punch]."

NSWRL counsel James McLeod said there was no question of a bite, and that the penalty needed to exceed the eight weeks Canterbury's Brad Morrin served for biting the elbow of Parramatta's Timana Tahu in 2007.

McLeod said panel members Graeme Wynn, Sean Garlick and Mark Coyne needed to hand down a penalty that would serve as a deterrent.Nicholls argued Schirnack had not required surgery and his injury was nowhere near as bad as boxer Evander Holyfield's, who had a chunk of his ear bitten off by Mike Tyson.
