Eddy Pettybourne tells of struggle at Wests Tigers

Star Wigan signing Eddy Pettybourne has revealed his season at Wests Tigers last year left him so depressed he asked his family to stay away from NRL games in which he was playing.

Pettybourne, 25, made his competitive debut for the Super League champions in their losing competition opener against Huddersfield before flying back for the World Club Challenge against Sydney Roosters next Saturday and a warm-up against the Warriors last Wednesday.

Eligible for Australia, New Zealand, Samoa and the team he played for in the 2013 World Cup, the US, Pettybourne said his sole season with Wests Tigers had been difficult.

''I signed under Tim Sheens and obviously he got the sack,'' he said. ''I had my plans ready with him. It was kind of hard coming in.

''Mick Potter was a good coach but he just wasn't probably my style. There were times there that I was broken mentally, wasn't playing good footy.

''Everything else was just piling up. There are times there when it was stressful. It was getting to the point where I was telling my family, 'Don't come to the games' and that. My mum and dad, they love coming to watch footy. They're Rabbitohs fans.

''They were always there for me, when I was in the dumps. I was telling my family, 'Just stay home, watch it on TV'. You're in the hole, you think there's no point. It's tough, that's just life I guess.

''I was finding it pretty hard at the Tigers, just getting in the team was pretty tough. It was a good experience, working under Mick Potter. It just wasn't my style, I wasn't playing good footy over there and he's given me the opportunity to come here.''

Pettybourne went into a Florida training camp underdone but believes he is up to speed and ready for the season ahead. The call-up to the US, due to his mother's American Samoa background, gave him the opportunity to check out the set-up at DW Stadium in Wigan.

He was impressed and fills the boots of Parramatta-bound forward Lee Mossop.

The South Sydney junior, who was called up for the Kiwis in 2009 but did not play, had fans chanting his name after a couple of big hits in a pre-season game against St Helens.

''I've got an opportunity to go back to the NRL and prove I can play footy,'' he said.

''That's a big part of it but seeing my family there and supporting me, that's probably going to drive me more.''

Its not just a case sometimes of a new coach inheriting players….a particular coach is always a big part of a players move to a new club

It all started to go wrong when he bleached his hair in the pre season. Wow look at me.

It was hard for him to play for Wests Tigers. It was also hard for most fans watching him play for Wests Tigers.

Good result all round I think. For him and for the Wests Tigers.

I was one who had high hopes for Pettybourne but he didn't live up to my expectations as well. Not as if he couldn't crack first grade under a new coach especially with that injury toll.

Hope he goes well over there (under a new coach)

If depression is the case, Pettybourne would have struggled. All easy to laugh at him. But, if you have been touched by it in some way, you wouldn't. And given the tragedy that struck the club at the beginning of 2013, we know the consequences.

"Mick Potter wasn't my style" Don't worry Eddy not many players born after 1980 are Potters style.

Well these are all your players now Potter….NO Excuses.

So we get that you're not Potter's greatest fan. So just who would you have appointed as coach when Sheens was sacked, or would you have kept Timmy Boy? Just interested to know that's all, 'cause you sure aren't cutting Potter any slack.

Depression isn't a word to use lightly - Look at Corey Paterson as an example of that.

Pettybourne is using it lightly.

We have a word for people like Pettybourne at my work.

"Precious"

well we have two words. the other one starts with B, and is usually associated with Female dogs. Pettybourne is definitely a little one of those.

Not a Potter fan I take it…if Sheenius was such a good coach why did desperate Parra reject him?

I'm not sure how to interpret what he said, but it seems as though he's saying playing at the Tigers gave him depression.

Maybe it was best for both parties , wish him well . Not nice to sign for a club thinking a certain coach will be coaching you only to find out that is not the case.

Wow what a cop out …we had an average pack and Eddie was given the chance .problem is Eddie is one paced and not a first grade Nrl player .its easy to come on when playing for souths after there big pack has made a dent in their opposition .. It's hard when you have to make the dents .. Enjoy ESL Eddie ,cause it's more to your pace
