apua New Guinea international Edene Gebbie has arrived in Brisbane for his mandatory 14-day quarantine period ahead of his transition down to Sydney to join Wests Tigers.

With no direct flights from Papua New Guinea to Sydney, Gebbie will quarantine in isolation in Brisbane for two weeks before linking up with his new teammates.

Having signed a train-and-trial deal with the club late last year, the 25-year-old has been delayed in joining the club due to raft of travel and biosecurity issues, but the finish line is certainly in sight for the talented outside back.

The club would like to extend its thanks to Marsden State High in Brisbane, who generously supplied Gebbie with training gear and equipment to get him ready for the start of the 2021 season with Wests Tigers.

Having starred for PNG Hunters and Wynnum-Manly in the Intrust Super Cup competition in Queensland, Gebbie will add further speed and competition for spots in the club's outside backs when he commences his train-and-trial contract.

Wests Tigers NRL squad kick off their season next Sunday against Canberra.

I think he'll be in the 17 sooner rather than later

Don’t get your hopes up.
He isn’t in the top 30 squad & hasn’t played a game of footy for nearly a year. Will be lucky to see him in 1sts this year.

Saw him today at the game, surprisingly smaller than I was expecting. Definitely won’t be playing first grade anytime soon. Don’t get your hopes up fellas

Gebbs will be available for selection in the coming weeks after having arthroscopic knee surgery. Speedy recovery.

fingers crossed he blitzes NSW Cup and makes his debut towards the end of the season. I see him as our long term left winger providing he makes the transition.

What's with all the talk about this guy? Is it because Melb have a Kumul going well?

He is very fast.

That puts him in the box seat I guess.

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe says Gebbie will be available for selection after round 10.

Tigers chief executive Justin Pascoe told The National yesterday that the 25-year old had undergone knee surgery after he arrived at the club last month.

He said the Koiari native's chances of debuting in the NRL this year would depend on his New South Wales Cup performances.

"Edene has been training with our NRL team," Pascoe said
"On his arrival where it was our first opportunity to do a medical review on Edene, we found a slight issue in his knee
"As a result he had a small operation to clean out his knee.

"He has been recovering from his operation and fitting in well with the team."

Pascoe said the focus of Gebbie's training for the past month had been physical rehab and he was also getting to know everyone around the club.

"He always has a big smile on his face," he said.
"Edene's contract is a train and trial deal which allows him to be selected after round 10, should we require.
"His chances this year would depend on his form in the reserve grade in which he should be back playing within the next two weeks."

Pascoe said their outside backs in previous seasons had lacked speed..

"Edene is a live wire," he said
"Our recruitment team identified speed as a factor missing from our squad and Edene has plenty of that.

"Hopefully, he gives his best in the reserve grade and anything is possible."
