Eels v Wests Tigers
Parramatta Stadium
Sunday, 3:30pm

The excitement factor ramps up by a factor of 10 when these two clubs square off, and this vital Sunday afternoon clash should be no different.

The Tigers climbed to third on the ladder and possibly stamped themselves as genuine title contenders last Sunday as they came home with a wet sail to swamp a badly out of sorts Panthers outfit at Campbelltown.

Meanwhile the Eels snapped a two-match losing streak with a gutsy win over the rudder-less (and Lockyer-less) Broncos up at Suncorp. Luckily for fans heading out to Parramatta Stadium this weekend, that win keeps the Eels’ faint finals hopes alive meaning both teams will have everything to play for.

Having looked to have wrapped up a finals berth for the first time in five years, could the Tigers be tempted to relax and take their foot off the gas? If the Tigers lose any kind of focus it could work in favour of a desperate Eels side who cannot afford another slip-up or it’s almost certainly curtains for 2010.

Parramatta will go in with virtually the same team that triumphed over the Broncos, with Daniel Anderson electing to again leave young gun Daniel Mortimer on the sidelines. Mortimer has not been named for Eels feeder team Wentworthville although there are rumours he will play.

But coaches don’t usually like to change a winning team – so even if Parramatta do somehow surge into the top eight it’s hard to see how Mortimer will fit back into the top grade side this season.

Timana Tahu has again been named to return from an ankle injury after he was a late withdrawal against Brisbane, replacing Jonathon Wright.

Ben Smith serves the second week of a two-week suspension meaning the impressive Justin Horo will again start and Taniela Lasalo keeps his bench spot alongside last week’s debutant Anthony Mitchell.

For the Tigers, prop Keith Galloway is still under an injury cloud after being a late withdrawal against the Panthers last week, but he has been named as a straight swap for Bryce Gibbs, who went off early in that game with a back complaint and will not take the field this week.

Wade McKinnon, who also withdrew before kick-off last week, has not been named, allowing Mitch Brown another chance in the custodian’s role.

Watch out Eels: The Tigers’ kicking game will be a vital weapon here. The Roosters laid down a blueprint for keeping Eels superstar Jarryd Hayne quiet: king long, kick early if necessary… and kick away from him whenever possible.

The Tigers lead the NRL for kicks into open space, with 70 per cent of kicks finding the turf, meaning they should be well equipped to follow that plan.

Also, the Eels have conceded more tries from kicks than any other team in the competition, with 27\. If Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah are on song with the boot the Eels’ back three will be in for a torrid afternoon.

Watch out Tigers: As much as Eels coach Daniel Anderson would have been delighted with the win last week, the fact that it was a real team effort will have pleased him the most.

Although there were some customary flashes of brilliance from Jarryd Hayne, Luke Burt showed that there are other Eels capable of a brilliant solo try, Justin Horo stepped into the starting role admirably and Justin Poore looks to have returned his best form.

But it was game breaker Feleti Mateo who really shone. With his playing future now decided the enigmatic Auckland-bound lock put in his best performance of the season. A team-high 134 running metres, two line-breaks, two line-break assists, a try assist, four offloads and a whopping 10 tackle-breaks handed Mateo the man of the match award and sounded a warning to future opponents that he is ready to cash in on his limitless potential.

Where it will be won: Focus. These are two of the real Jekyll-and-Hyde teams of the competition and you can never be sure which version is going to show up. It can make them a delight to watch but it can also make them an endless source of frustration for fans.

Having crossed the magical 30-point barrier, will the Tigers play out the season with one eye on September? And will the Eels be able to keep putting in, knowing the tiniest slip-up could end their season?

Parramatta have been either brilliant or terrible over the past month, and the Tigers ran riot over Penrith just a week after blowing a huge lead against Souths. Whichever coach is able to keep his troops focused on the job at hand will take a massive advantage into this one.

The history: Played 21, Parramatta 14, Wests Tigers 6, drawn 1\. The Tigers had the Eels’ measure earlier this year, prevailing 23-12 at the SFS, but Parramatta have dominated the Tigers, winning more than two thirds of their total matches.

The blue-and-golds hold a 7-3 record over the Tigers at Parramatta Stadium and have won six of the past eight clashes overall.

Conclusion: These two clubs played out one of the matches of the year in Round 26 last year with a spot in the finals on the line. In a match remembered for Benji Marshall’s brilliant round-the-back flick pass and Jarryd Hayne’s stunning chip-and-chase, the Eels came away with the win.

With the stakes again high at the back end of the season, will history repeat itself? Both teams rejoined the winner’s circle last week but with a bit more to play for and a strong home record the Eels deserve to start favourites here.

Televised: Channel Nine – Delayed 4pm; Fox Sports – Delayed 6pm.

WTF?! Our kicking game is the best in the NRL?! Maybe coz of all the shocking grubbers they put in 'finds the turf', unfortunately it's only 10m behind the defensive line

I had the same reaction! So either the stats are not showing a true picture of our kicking game, or we hugely underestimate it!

Laurie Daley's round 24 preview

Parramatta v Wests Tigers, Parramatta Stadium, Sunday 3pm (EST)
This will be an entertaining game and hopefully it will be played in dry conditions because there'll be plenty of ball movement from these two sides. Both teams have some tremendous backs out wide and I expect it to be a high-quality contest like we saw when they met at the back-end of last season. Jarryd Hayne was not as involved as he would have liked to be last week against Brisbane - even though the Eels got the points - and I get the feeling he will go up a level and get his side home.

As predictable as ever Snoz…

We will win this game.

The Tigers are very good at keeping players quiet. Almost to their own detriment, they often focus too much on superstars and average players get too much space as a result.

The difference is, aside from Hayne and Mateo (and to a lesser extent Burt and Moi Moi), the Eels have nobody else to really pressure the Tigers.

Hayne will see almost no football, Mateo will get swamped, and there will be nobody else to pick up the scraps.

I expect the Eels will score maybe 2 or 3 tries and they will all be against the run of play tries from dumping it out the back when the Tigers get up and in on players like Hindmarsh and Mateo.

The Eels conversely have no right to believe they can defend the Tigers out of this one.

The strengths the Tigers have shown this season, both long range and extremely close range are areas the Eels cannot defend against.

I feel quietly confident after not feeling so V Penrith. The other thing to note is this is when we have seen Benji at his best, could this kickstart his finals form…let's hope so.

...

Funny, I could have sworn it wasn't the final round of the season… Obviously it wasn't remembered very clearly by whoever wrote this. Doesn't anybody check stats? It took me 30 seconds to look it up. Yep, round 24.

And I am sure many Wests Tigers fans remember the game most for the injury of Taniela...

It is a stupid stat IMO

The kicks don't go far, yeah they find the turf but they don't go far and then there is a poor kick chase.

I think that whole thing is kinda rubbish, best team in comp at finding ground lol.

Preview: Eels v Wests Tigers
John Greco

VENUE & TIME: Parramatta Stadium, August 22, 3.00pm (AEST)
COVERAGE: Channel 9
HEAD TO HEAD: Played 21 – Eels 14, Tigers 6, Drawn 1
LAST TIME: Round 3, 2010 – Tigers 23-12

WALKING WOUNDED: The Eels have no fresh injury concerns and have been boosted by the return of NSW Origin representative Timana Tahu from an ankle injury. Daniel Mortimer remains on the outer after being 'rested' for last weekend's win over the Broncos meaning another youngster Anthony Mitchell keeps his place. The Tigers were dealt a blow this week with prop Bryce Gibbs ruled out until at least the finals with a knee injury picked up in the early stages of Sunday's win over Penrith. 'Big Red' Keith Galloway is back to take his place while fullback Wade McKinnon still hasn't shrugged off his hamstring injury meaning Mitch Brown will wear the No.1 jersey again.

FORM: If wins were handed out for amount of media coverage a club can attract then the Eels would have their finals hopes already sewn up. Coach Daniel Anderson was reportedly close to being given the flick this week until his future was assured by club officials for the remainder of his contract while other reports also have Parramatta heavily in the market for Wallaby star Quade Cooper. Back-to-back losses to the Roosters and Titans looked to all but end the Eels' finals hopes but the win over Brisbane last weekend means their destiny is back in their own hands. Many thought the Tigers were on the slide after an unconvincing three weeks but Tim Sheens' men responded in the battle of the cats last weekend, piling on 43 points in their demolition of the Panthers. They now look odds on to qualify for the finals for the first time in five years and can basically sew up a top four spot with a win over the Eels.

WHO'S HOT: He may have been below his best earlier in the year - leading to the club allowing him to take up an offer with the Warriors in 2011 - but talented Eels back-rower Feleti Mateo has hit form at just the right time. Regarded as one of the most creative and damaging players in the NRL when he's on song, Mateo has shed the inconsistency from his game over the last few weeks and is now a key figure in whether the Blue and Gold's can continue their now customary late season run to the play-offs. Tigers back-rower Chris Heighington plays his 150th NRL game this weekend and you can bet this one will be just like the other 149, full of grit, powerful ball-running and non-stop hard work in defence. While Englishman Gareth Ellis gets many of the plaudits in the Tigers pack, Heighington is just as important a figure for Sheen's troops.

WE THINK: Both sides have been up and down over the last month making this contest a real toss of the coin clash. The Eels though should be the more desperate with their season to be consigned to the dustbin if they lose here. The Tigers may have won the encounter earlier in the year but it's been a rare success for them in this fixture of late, with the Eels winning eight of the last 10 in these western Sydney encounters. With that in mind and the fact the Eels looked so ominous in their win in Brisbane last Friday night, the home side might just have enough to get over the line.
Eels by 6.

Love being the underdog! Cannot wait for this one..

I agree, all focus is on parra, if wests-tigers play with attitude/committment like they did against panthers, it will be a good game.

Parramatta Eels v Wests Tigers
Greg Prichard
August 19, 2010 - 5:29PM

Sunday, Parramatta Stadium, 3pm
Referees: Shayne Hayne, Ben Cummins
Head to head: Eels 14, Tigers 6
Last clash: Tigers 23 bt Eels 12 at Sydney Football Stadium (rd 3 2010)
TAB SportsBet: Eels $1.67 Tigers $2.15
FootyTab: Tigers +2.5

The Eels, two points outside of the top eight in 10th place and with a poor points for-and-against differential of minus-54, probably need to win all three of their remaining games to make the finals, so although they have been inconsistent all season we should expect to see a high level of commitment from them here. They were very impressive in beating the Broncos on the road last weekend, with playmakers Kris Keating and Feleti Mateo starring and fullback Jarryd Hayne making some huge plays.

But it must be pointed out that while the Broncos were without their main playmaker - Darren Lockyer - the Tigers will have no shortage of playmakers to take on the Eels. Halfback Robert Lui played well for the Tigers in their big win over the Panthers last weekend, and forms a three-pronged playmaking union along with Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah. The desperate Eels will be very hard to beat at home, but because of the attacking potential of both sides this is a game that may not be decided until very late.
