Tiger switch an attacking eye-opener for Elijah

Former Penrith tackling machine Elijah Taylor says his mid-season switch to Concord last year was an eye-opener as he unleashed his rarely-seen attacking skills and he is keen to build on that in 2017.

The hard-working lock spent time at dummy half but was afforded a ball-playing role while in the back row as well, producing three try assists, four line break assists and a try in his 15 games with the Wests Tigers.

Taylor told NRL.com the club's new-look coaching roster under Jason Taylor as well as its trio of gifted young playmakers all encouraged him to get his hands on the ball in attack which has led to a vastly increased enjoyment of his footy since leaving the foot of the mountains.

"When I first met 'JT' and the coaching staff, my first meeting with them, they wanted me to focus on my attack with my passing," Taylor said.

"Their first pitch was leadership and then it was my attack. It was my defence later because they already knew I could do that."

Coming to the end of his first pre-season at the club would help immensely with combinations as well, the forward added.

"I know them all really well now, it's been good to develop relationships with our new coaches and work on our timing and combinations during the off-season," he said.

"The off-season has been very different compared to previous years. Everything we do is game specific. All the training we do when we get flogged, when we have to train hard, it's specific to rugby league; we're not running up sand dunes."

‌Taylor said the club's game plan was now built around himself and other ball-players in the pack getting involved with the ball in hand.

"They built their game plan around me getting the ball and helping with the structure," he said.

"Last year was a massive eye opener. When you get to play with the ball you have a bit more fun instead of just tackling your ring out.

"It's good for the team too but last year I really enjoyed my footy because I got my hands on the ball and I could ball play. The coaches encourage me to do it and it really opened my eyes to the other side of footy.

"The spine calls all the shots, I just work off them and help out where I can if need be. It's good the halves give me the opportunity to do that.

"All of our forwards can pass and we've really hammered that during the pre-season. Especially with defences so hard to break, that extra little skill factor could change a game."

Fullback James Tedesco – one of the most gifted attacking players in the competition – backed the strategy to get players like Taylor the ball in attack.

"'ET', he acts as another ball player, his passing and the way he can go into the line is as good as and the halves so having him as the lock definitely helps our attack and creates a bit of variety for us," Tedesco told NRL.com.

"The way he's been coaching some of our other back-rowers and locks as well and obviously 'Woodsy' (captain and prop Aaron Woods) can ball play as well so we've got a lot of options there.

"We know our attack can spark, we just need that consistency with our defence so I think that's our big area."

That was very evident yesterday and he looked really good. Just please JT keep him away from dummy half or defending in the middle as he lost his spark and looked half the player when you did that.

I'm pretty sure Taylor defended in the middle the entire time he was on the field as he is one of the only blokes in our side that can effectively slow down the ruck and has the work rate of a machine..

Agree wholeheartedly about keeping out of 9 in attack though…

"tackling your ring out!" - a unique turn of phrase from Elijah, the mind boggles at the thought!

In the trials, Elijah seems to be rotating with Aloiai in the middle third with Sue spending time on the right edge - might be a hint of what's to come in 2017 ?

So sick of this Taylorball. No wonder Paul Sironen said his son had to leave to get some ballplay.

Generally you have to be going forward to have success when you swing it wide. Sironen could have helped establish this forward momentum, but preferred standing out wide bludging and letting someone else do the dirty work.
The tigers need to start moving away from these highlight reel players and focus on a core group of players that are prepared to roll their sleeves up and put in the hard work.

Young siro was lazy. He was a forward without drive to do his job

This is good news ET is just brilliant as a ball player and he plays 80 so our back row has two 80 minute players in ET & Lawrence.

Not sold on how effective Lawrence is over 80 minutes though.

Agree but he does at least run a good line in attack I think Aloai will become our best second rower this year.
If the roster doesn't change Sue will play in the front toe with Woods.

Interesting that 3 Sydney clubs are chasing Chris McQueen. He would be ideal to replace Lawrence.

I really think Lawrence should be playing no more thank 50 minutes. I love the guy and you know your going to get 110%, but i really think getting one of the younger guys on while he gets a breather is the way to go.

Lawrence does run good lines but perhaps if he varied it up a little instead of just running the outside-in one where he just gets smashed by the defence because they know 100% that is where he is headed, especially on those decoy runs he always seems to get lumped with. He gets annihilated every time and you would have to think it takes a massive toll on his body which is why he usually loses his effectiveness. He is too tough for his own good, would like to see some of the other bigger blokes take their share to ease his punishment a bit.
As for McQueen, he would be handy but wouldn't be worth the hefty price tag he would be asking for. He will no doubt end up at the Roosters, they always have a spare $600 000 laying around somehow.

If they are going to play him 80min, they should consider giving him a week off every now and then.

Exactly what i said months ago. He either plays 60 minutes a week or they monitor him and give him a weeks rest to freshen him up every now and then. We cant have him fall away late in the year like he did in 2016.

On Elijah, his performance on Friday night is the first thing to get me really excited. He was unbelievable IMO.

When he was unsigned i said i didnt care if he stayed. His form fell away late in the year and i didnt know if we could carry just a small backrower who makes 40 tackles. But if he plays like he did on Friday he will be the most influential forward in the game. He basically played 3 position all in one. His ball playing was great and fast, his defence was superb, and when he just got the ball and ran hard he made as good as yards as any other middle player. 80 minutes of Brooks and Moses playing off that every week will be brilliant to watch.

The Tigers showed glimpses last year of changing the game. Every now and then a new style comes into shake the game up. A few games last year we made deliberate efforts to promote the ball through our forwards and then our young backs played off the back of that instinctively. It broke down the structured defences. The way our forwards played lead by Woods and Taylor showed the intentions of Jason Taylor and its a formula that could turn Rugby League back to the entertaining days.

I suspect that his perceived drop in form was just a ploy to get Moses to take more control.

Wasn't a doubt in my mind that he needed to be kept…I just presumed you were having a Heighington moment....
