Ellis a better import than I was: Hanley

Wests Tigers back-rower Gareth Ellis has been described as the club's greatest English import by the man many believed would hold that title forever.

Great Britain champion Ellery Hanley, named the greatest British rugby league player of all time in 2007, says Ellis' feats in the black and gold eclipse anything he did for the club.

Ellis, who is confident of returning from a foot injury against the Bulldogs in round 18, has been named the Tigers' player of the year in each of his three seasons at the club.

"He's way up there (as one of England's best ever imports) in my opinion," Hanley, who is in Sydney to be inducted into the Tigers Hall of Fame at a gala dinner on Wednesday, said on Friday.

"I put him above even myself, and I believe that.

"I was a very honest player on the football paddock and did all the right things.

"(But) what he's been very good at is being consistent. To be voted the player of the season by the Wests Tigers is absolutely wonderful.

"He deserves all the honours and big wraps he's received. He's been outstanding.

"There's no question about it. He's looked after himself and he's a true athlete.

"It gives me great pleasure in saying that.

"To come from England and to play out in Australia in the hardest competition and to perform week in, week out consistently. He's done a good job."

While Ellis was humbled by the praise from Hanley, he had even better news for Tigers fans desperate to see him back on the field.

"I started running this week for the first time in about 11 weeks so that's been different," Ellis told AAP.

The 31-year-old, who will return to the English Super League with Hull FC at the end of the season, said while he is shattered to have missed so much of his final year with the Tigers he does see a silver lining in the injury-ravaged campaign.

A tough-as-nails player, Ellis typically is carrying half a dozen niggling injuries by the halfway mark of the year.

But by featuring in just four matches in 2012 due to a Jones fracture in his left foot, he believes the rest of his body has never felt better.

And that spells bad news for rival clubs when he makes a comeback with eight weeks left before the finals.

"There's not many seasons you go through where you're not nursing some injury throughout the year," Ellis said.

"So to be able to have this time off during the year is not the greatest thing, but looking at the positives it should be a great addition to our squad when I get back.

"I'll be a bit fresher. I can bring the boys through that are nursing injuries and add a bit of enthusiasm to the squad again."

ELLERY HANLEY WALKS THE HALLOWED LEICHHARDT OVAL TURF ONCE MORE

The sign on the historic old scoreboard at Leichhardt Oval said it all – ‘Welcome Home Ellery, Up the Tigers’.

One of the greatest rugby league players of all time in English international Ellery Hanley returned to Leichhardt Oval today as a guest of the Wests Tigers ahead of Sunday’s clash against the Sydney Roosters.

Hanley may have played only eight matches for Balmain in 1988 but his impact on the team was massive, helping the Tigers to win six sudden death matches to qualify for the grand final against Canterbury. Unfortunately Hanley was knocked out early in the first half by Canterbury’s Terry Lamb and failed to return for the second half as the Tigers went down in the premiership decider.

Hanley joined the Western Suburbs Magpies the following year before returning to the Balmain Tigers in 1996-97\. In all, Hanley played 34 matches for Balmain in a 491 game career from 1978-97.

Nicknamed ‘The Black Pearl’, Hanley was reacquainted at Leichhardt Oval with his former Balmain team-mates in Paul Sironen, Garry Jack, Ben Elias and Gary Freeman. They were also joined by Wests Tigers English international back-rower Gareth Ellis.

Hanley will attend the Roosters match and is a special guest at the Wests Tigers Gala Dinner at Curzon Hall, Marsfield, on Thursday, June 28.

“I’m looking forward to Sunday. I really encourage everybody to come out. I’m excited,’’ Hanley said.

“I have no doubt that the Tigers will win. They are in good form, they are playing well, they are defending well and their discipline is good.

“It is great for me to be here and everybody has made me feel so welcome. I couldn’t believe when I walked in and saw the ‘Welcome Home Ellery’ sign.

"It really struck me and gave me a wonderful thrill to think that the people still think of me so highly after all these years.”

Hanley was something special. I think Ellis is a great player - I liken him to Paul Sironen - however I'm not sure he is at Hanley's level.

Cant agree with Ellery here.

Gareth is a great player, but is not a legend. He has been outplayed in most Internationals between ENG and AUS I have ever seen. Hanley was - a lot of the times - man of the match or damned near it during such fixtures.

Hanley also came to Balmain, a side chockful of stars and shone….in fact he carried us to the GF in '88\. Gareth has been a warrior for us...very reliable...but doesnt have that X factor that Ellery had. Hanley was more skillful and a better leader of men.

Ellery is still our best overseas import. I was hoping this year would see Gareth surpass him but his negligable contribution to the season thus far will probably see him not quite achieve this status.

Who will ever forget "Ellery eats Celery"

Personally I think Gareth will need to win a premiership to be classed a better player than Hanley

Terry Lamb you'll always be a low life in my eyes after the dog shot you landed on Hanley in 88

Mate I think you are overrating Hanley a fair bit especially in international games

Could only play one side of the field effectively and Sirro used to make a mess of him once Australia worked him out

Personally think Schofield in international football stood up more often than Hanley

It's really hard to compare them, considering they played different positions and had very different games. However, I reckon Schofield was the best of the lot for both Wests and Balmain.

Don't forget the legendary Harvey Howard

Ellis>Hanley due to longevity and consistency.

Can still remember Hanley's first game with the tigers; big crowd at Leichardt, he skirts round to the right, almost running backwards, thinking wtf is he doing, he then straightens and hits the accelerator and someone with his devastating left hand fend and he is away.

Was at the GF in 1988\. Lamb should have been cited and suspended for 12 months. Roach was suspended for 6 weeks for a nothing hit on Chris Mortimer in the 5th place mid-week playoff. If Roach plays in the GF, we win, he would of sorted out that Bulldog pack that was fairly average. That soft cock Dunn was man of the match, Roach would of mauled him.

The injustice of it all, i cant let it go…........
