Ennis Could make the All Star Side

Menacing Bulldogs and NSW Origin hooker Michael Ennis could be the bolter in the NRL All Stars team to be announced on Friday despite his late addition to the shortlist last week.

Ennis narrowly missed making the original shortlist of 64 (four players from each club - two backs and two forawards) announced four weeks ago but was added last week when Canterbury team- mate Greg Eastwood was forced to withdraw with injury.

Despite having less exposure to the voting public who have been asked to select 16 players (one from each club) to join skipper Darren Lockyer and vice-captain Benji Marshall for the February 12 match, Ennis is polling well.

Voting closes at 11.59pm AEDT (10.59pm in Queensland) on Thursday (Jan 27) at http://www.nrl.com/allstars" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and coach Wayne Bennett will announce his team on Friday.

While Storm captain Cameron Smith is almost certain to fill the hooker's role, Ennis may find himself securing a bench spot for the match against the Indigenous All Stars at Skilled Park, Gold Coast.

To earn a spot, a player must first be the highest polling player in a position. Once a player from one club is placed in the team, no other player from that club can be chosen.

Ennis is up against Aiden Tolman, Ben Roberts and Bryson Goodwin for the Bulldogs spot in the team.

"It would be enormous," Ennis told NRL.com today. "While it is very disappointing for Greg, I am so grateful for the opportunity to be considered for selection.

"It was wonderful to watch last year and it is great for our game to turn on this event.

"It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to get all those players together. Even with Origin you still don't get to play with someone like Benji Marshall; and while I was fortunate to play with Darren Lockyer for a short time (at the Broncos) I'd love to play with him again.

"It would be really humbling. It would be a wonderful week and something to look back on when my career is finished. To look at that jersey with my kids; it really would be something to be proud of."

Ennis had the most humbling experience of his life last week when he was reduced to tears by what he and his Bulldogs team-mates experienced in flood-ravaged Grantham (near Ipswish QLD).

"It didn't fully hit me until I got home to my wife and three children," said Ennis, who spoke to locals who had lost everything … family members, homes, all their possessions.

He said he wrote about his encounter in The Sunday Telegraph last weekend as a way of dealing with the life-changing experience.

In the article he said: "Since returning home I'm a chnaged man; I didn't want to leave. I drew so much power from these brave people and they made me realise I have to love and cherish life and all it has to offer.

"I will never forget all the brave people I met - and I hope no one else forgets them."

Overview of NRL All Stars voting:
- The first player to be chosen in the NRL All Stars team will be the player who scores the highest number of overall votes in a position.
- Once a player from one club is placed in the team, no other player from that club can be chosen.
- If a player withdraws from the team due to injury, he will be replaced by someone from the bench.
- The open bench spot will then be replaced by someone from the injured player’s club, with the new player having recorded the second highest number of votes from that club, either as a forward, back or utility, depending on the position needed for the bench.
- The Australian and New Zealand captains are automatically included in the team.
- At the end of Stage Two voting, the coach selects from shortlisted players still available, the two remaining players to complete the 20-man squad.

Less than 2000 tickets are available for the Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars to be played at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast on February 12, 2011.

Tickets are available through Ticketek outlets, on 132 849 or http://www.ticketek.com.au" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

New Zealand customers can call 0800 842 538 or +61 132 849.

What a joke if this dropkick makes the side. He is only there because Eastwood pulled out. If Pritchard was still there he would of made it instead. I hope Tolman makes it.

God I hope this oxygen thief doesn't get selected. It's already a big enough travesty that he has played for the Blues .

Who cares… this just further emphasises that this game is no more than a simple Circus Treat to increase revenue into the game!

Imagine how big his head will get if he reads he might be an "ALL STAR"

Waiting for Laurie Daley to start crowing that Ennis is "All-Star Built."

How this clown has waffled his way through first grade is a joke. If he was anyone else the only FG team he would walk into would be Cronulla and not even they were desperate enough to sign him.

Ennis is the epitome of the bulldung club and their supporters. Trust me I know I'm related to a sizable chunk of them.

I'll also add that this media puff piece is a classic example of how the media get behind certain players and try to push the selection barrow for them. The way the media favour Ennis over more talented players in the #9 jersey is disgraceful. If it weren't for the Terrorgraph no would know who Ennis was.

A bit harsh Bogan, but I love your work…

Ennis can play football and does have good talent. Unfortunately, he isnt yet 'star power' like he and a few think he is and if he concentrates more on the basics of his game and cuts out the scrappy rubbish, he might reach his potential one day.

He is well down the list of Hookers which should get the nod ahead of him...

x 2 THE most over-rated 9 in the nrl. he should have his blue's jumper framed already cause he wont be getting anymore now that daley and bellamy are gone

I hope Ennis gets picked. I would dearly love none of our guys to play in this exhibition match.

Remember what happened to Gidley?

Does anybody else notice how it may not be just a coincidence that his own article on the qld floodings has come out around the time the all star team is selected?

When I read some of the article I thought 'that's good he's helping out' but at the same time I had a suspicion it was to help improve his image particularly after his origin brain explosion.

I'm starting to think that it may all be related to the all stars game as well.

Also what about all the other possible bolters?

x3.

I'm amazed at how some of the commentators say Ennis is 'better suited' to origin than Robbie. I mean, Cam Smith is the same style as Robbie, so does that mean Ennis is more suited to origin than Cam?

… and what is this 'origin style'? Throwing away penalties and going missing for large periods of the game.

No doubt that idiotic line of thought probably started out of a genius like Daley.

Ennis is a grub of a person and a grub of a footballer.
Wouldnt be Farahs bootlaces.
I hate how he puts on this rubbish act infront of the media, hope hes this years gidley

As much as you may dislike him as a player and on field persona it is not really correct to assume the worst about the man off the field. He is, by all reports, a devoted husband and father who does his best for them. Not really fair to make that kind of judgement call on a guy who you do not know

Our hate of Ennis is partly because we feel robbed as one of our own has been dudded for this guy. Ennis is obviously a germ to some degree, but like Smeg said, he could be a champion family man and credit to him if thats the case. It isnt his fault he gets picked ahead of Robbie. And lets face it, Robbie has been guilty of talking himself up the same way Ennis does.

We all have no doubt Ennis isnt even in the top 5 hookers in the game, but

he has talent. I do however, rate him the most overrated player in the comp.

For the record, i have Farah, Smith and Luke all on equal terms as number 9's with the rest well behind.

smeg - I'll concede that some people have an over-stated hatred of Ennis - but whether I like him or not - I find it very hard to respect a bloke who tries to make a name for himself by starting a blue and then immediately ducking behind his own prop when it kicks off!!!

Especially when it happens when his team is in possession on their own 30 metre line - and the resulting penalty wins the game for Qld!!!

He is a mug!!!

Ennis is no where near as bad as 95% of the posters on here make him out to be. Probably just outside the top 5 hookers in the NRL (Smith, Luke, Farah, Ballin and Friend), but he is by no means the worst. As for the people attacking his character, that's pretty low, from all reports I've heard he is a decent bloke off the field.

Yeah your right Sirro, however there is a major difference in the language used by the pair in interviews.

If a reporter asks Robbie about Origin, he's reply will be humble and a little hopeful, he'll talk up his chance but compare it to how Ennis does it.

Ennis will say something like " WE have the side to beat them, its all on OUR shoulders, WE'VE had a few series together now and it's time for US to stand up and deliver and reach OUR potential."

The regularity in which he is given air time, added to the way he approaches and sells himself during these interviews gives people a false belief in how good he is. You have to remember that there'd be quite a few people out there that may only see 1 or 2 games a week. If the dogs are going poorly, they may only see him play once a month - yet read about him 2 or 3 times in that period.

Dont get me wrong, he can play, you dont make this level without some talent, but as others have said he isn't realistically in the top 5 hookers in the game. You try convincing people that though…..
