I know there was a lot of criticism over Nofo and Teddy in last year’s team, but it’s still good to see Marsters there.

surely thats not Thurston at half.

Pretty sure Thurston topped the league for try assists in 2018

Season in Review: Esan Marsters
Author Dan Talintyre Timestamp Mon 17 Sep 2018, 03:30 PM

It's been a year to remember for young gun Esan Marsters.

While 2017 might have been the time that he finally got his shot at first-grade and ticked off his childhood dream, 2018 was the year that he proved to everyone that he certainly belongs in the big time.

One of two Wests Tigers players to play every game for the club this year, Marsters was a constant threat on the right edge as his combination with David Nofoaluma continued to improve each week.

He was named the club's Best New Talent at the end-of-season presentation night, was voted by players across the game in the Players' 13 Dream Team and made his international debut for New Zealand.

Having inked a contract extension with the club early in the year, Marsters went on to record an impressive season that included three tries, seven try-assists, nine linebreaks and 67 tackle breaks.

No back in the NRL made more offloads than Marsters (49) during the regular season.

Despite never kicking in the junior grades, Marsters took over the goal kicking on a full-time basis for Wests Tigers in Round 2 before going on to record 56 goals at a 76.71% conversion rate.

With a full season under his belt, the 22-year-old is certainly a player for the future and one of Wests Tigers brightest options to watch in 2019 — which will no doubt only improve following Moses Mbye's arrival to the club and Josh Reynolds' return from a season-ending injury in the year to come.

WHAT STOOD OUT IN 2018
Aside from his consistency in playing (and contributing) in every game this season, Marsters' attacking class again shone through in 2018 with his bullocking runs and skills close to the line. It was the attacking side of things that made him a star in the Holden Cup system and he proved again how tough he is to handle with team-high totals in tackle breaks and offloads. Marsters averaged over 130 metres per game, had seven try assists and nine linebreaks — all very good numbers for a player in his first full season.

WHAT'S TO COME IN 2019
While the left side of Wests Tigers seemed to be the more potent side throughout the year, don't be surprised if the right side takes over more in 2019\. Moses Mbye showed in his limited time with Wests Tigers just how good of a ball-playing option he is out the back, and with Josh Reynolds back from injury, the right side of Wests Tigers should fire again. Marsters and Nofoaluma finished the year playing very good footy together off the back of Mbye's arrival and you'd have to think that, with a full preseason all together, that quartet could be a dangerous combination for opposition defences in 2019.

Marsters holds no grudge towards Cleary

Esan Marsters says he holds no hard feelings over Ivan Cleary's departure from the Wests Tigers despite re-signing with the club under the assumption Cleary would be coaching the side into the future.

Wests Tigers forwards Russell Packer and Ben Matulino signed on long-term deals with the Tigers in 2018 with Cleary a key figure in their decision, while Robbie Farah's return was rubberstamped by the well-liked coach.

Cleary sent a text message to Wests Tigers players speaking of his departure on Saturday - which was obtained by NRL.com - but Marsters said he never received one due to a change of sim card in the United Kingdom. He learned of the message via social media.

Cleary handed Marsters his NRL debut in 2017 and is currently on tour with the Kiwis under expected replacement Michael Maguire.

"Leading into it there was a lot of build up with Ivan's future but in the end he's going where his heart is," Marsters told NRL.com in Hull following Saturday's Test match.

"It's disappointing but I can't be angry at him because he gave me my chance and that's why I'm here playing for the Kiwis at the moment.

"I'm grateful for him, I know it's a shock for many of our fans and the club but he's doing what's best for him and his family."

The joint venture has endured a tough five-year period with four different coaches.

Marsters was confident Maguire, who is expected to be announced as Wests Tigers coach for the next three seasons, would be a success at the club.

"He's been really good for me so far and helped me develop my game over here," Marsters said.

"I think knowing he's going to be at the Tigers now he'll probably put a bit more work into me over the coming weeks.

"Everyone is good at adapting, a lot of the boys have had different coaches so we're used to it.

"All we can do is control what we do on the field and that will start with having a great pre-season when it rolls around and we'll get back on track."

Marsters scored the opening try for the Kiwis overnight in their 18-16 loss to England in game one of the three-Test series in Hull on Saturday.

A late try sealed the win for England as the Kiwis let themselves down with ball control and discipline late.

"It was a different experience, very loud," Marsters said.

"It's all about learning from that and taking it to the next level. We're still trying to get combinations right and need to knuckle down and correct what went wrong.

"We're not phased by the 1-0 [series] scoreline, if we can fix a few things we're confident of winning the last two games of the series."

The Kiwis will travel to Liverpool on Sunday night (AEDT) ahead of the second Test at Anfield on November 4.

This kid is on his way to being a star of the game. Forget who the coach is Esan and play your game. being in the NZ squad with Madge will get him ready for a big 2019.

Id like to know what Esan _really_ thinks..im sure it aint the above

Actually I reckon it would be exactly what he thinks. Apart from the more outspoken ones, most players just suck it up and are happy to play NRL with their mates no matter who the coach is. It's the fans that go all hysterical when coaches or players walk before their contract is up.

Did anyone else see that try that Esan scored this morning .. ball going out wide in a backline move .. then the ball is turned back on the inside to a rampaging Esan going hard and unstoppable for the line .. !! It was definitely a set play .. so here's hoping Madge has more tricks like that using Esan up his sleeve for next season .. !!

Congrats to Esan for his selection in the Maori Team to play the Indigenous All-Stars on 15 February.

@happy_tiger but but peeps want to move him to the backrow :see_no_evil::hear_no_evil::speak_no_evil:

Im looking forward to this game, it's a much better concept than the all stars team. Is Shaun Johnson not a maori?
