Extra Wests Tigers game at Campbelltown Stadium not enough

COMMUNITY leaders are angry that the Wests Tigers will play only one additional game at Campbelltown Stadium next season after $8 million was spent upgrading the venue.
The Tigers will play four games each at its traditional home venues - Campbelltown and Leichhardt Oval - in the 2010 NRL season. The 2005 premiers will play three games at the Sydney Football Stadium and one at the SCG next year, compared to six games at SCG Sports Trust venues this year.
For the past three seasons the Tigers have played just three games at Campbelltown Stadium, saying the facilities were inadequate for the NRL competition.
Werriwa Federal Labor MP Chris Hayes (pictured) said the Tigers needed to make a greater commitment to Campbelltown after the Federal Government committed $8 million to upgrade the ground.
“The extra game is a step in the right direction, but it’s not enough. I’ll continue to call for more games at Campbelltown until Wests Tigers recognise the support they receive in southwest Sydney,” he said.
“I understand rugby league is now a business, but it’s a business that depends on the support of the fans.”
Mr Hayes said the Tigers should play “a minimum of six home games in Campbelltown”.
The redeveloped stadium will include 5000 extra seats and refurbished player facilities when completed in March.
Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys said it was vital to the “financial health” of the club to play three games at the SFS and one against South Sydney at the SCG.
“Playing at major venues like the SFS and SCG is an aspect of our business we clearly need to retain. But we do see the benefits of scheduling more games at our traditional venues,” he said.
Cr Paul Lake said five games at Campbelltown would be the council’s next goal. “If I was Stephen Humphreys I’d be asking the NRL to schedule Sunday afternoon games out here, because they are a lot better supported,” he said
