Extra Wests Tigers game at Campbelltown Stadium not enough

COMMUNITY leaders are angry that the Wests Tigers will play only one additional game at Campbelltown Stadium next season after $8 million was spent upgrading the venue.

The Tigers will play four games each at its traditional home venues - Campbelltown and Leichhardt Oval - in the 2010 NRL season. The 2005 premiers will play three games at the Sydney Football Stadium and one at the SCG next year, compared to six games at SCG Sports Trust venues this year.

For the past three seasons the Tigers have played just three games at Campbelltown Stadium, saying the facilities were inadequate for the NRL competition.

Werriwa Federal Labor MP Chris Hayes (pictured) said the Tigers needed to make a greater commitment to Campbelltown after the Federal Government committed $8 million to upgrade the ground.

“The extra game is a step in the right direction, but it’s not enough. I’ll continue to call for more games at Campbelltown until Wests Tigers recognise the support they receive in southwest Sydney,” he said.

“I understand rugby league is now a business, but it’s a business that depends on the support of the fans.”

Mr Hayes said the Tigers should play “a minimum of six home games in Campbelltown”.

The redeveloped stadium will include 5000 extra seats and refurbished player facilities when completed in March.

Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys said it was vital to the “financial health” of the club to play three games at the SFS and one against South Sydney at the SCG.

“Playing at major venues like the SFS and SCG is an aspect of our business we clearly need to retain. But we do see the benefits of scheduling more games at our traditional venues,” he said.

Cr Paul Lake said five games at Campbelltown would be the council’s next goal. “If I was Stephen Humphreys I’d be asking the NRL to schedule Sunday afternoon games out here, because they are a lot better supported,” he said

hey we're getting there, slowly, but surely we cant go backwards from here

Rubbish

“We feel it is important to settle into a permanent home ground for these four marquee games. It gives us stability."

Hayes and Lake will continue to campaign for more games at Campbelltown for as long as they are in office. They are staunch rugby league supporters who want elite sport for the community. Without them the upgrade would never of happened.

Even though I doubt we will ever see a 6 x 6 split again I admire the passion these two councilors have.

Because of renovations at Leichhardt and Campbellown early in the year, the Tigers will be forced to use the SFS in the opening six rounds meaning there will be no repeat of this year's end of year blockbuster with the Eels.
>
But Humpreys said the club was hopeful the NRL will be flexible and allow a possible venue switch: "You never know. **We still want to be able to reserve the right to be able to move one if the commercial case was compelling,'**' he said.

This quote in the telecrap will make you happy then Alien….......if they want ........they could still move to the WSFS if it's a 'compelling commercial case'.............Of couse you wouldn't know this until well into the season proper........

It's great that the council supports Rugby League and want more in the area.

Unfortunately, in Balmain we have the greens who are supported by people who let their dogs crap all over the footpaths around the area.

I, like most supporters, would love to see more games at our traditional home grounds, but in all honesty, I can't see the case they have for moving many more games out to Campbelltown. They had 3 games last year, of which two were inperfect times, but the supposedly massive amount of support in the south west should really still be at those games. They can't whinge on about not getting enough games when their crowds are struggling to get over 15,000\. If anything they should be moving more games to Leichhardt, Sunday afternoon. Everyone in rugby league knows nothing beats Leichhardt on a Sunday. Do you ever hear Gus going on about Campbelltown on a sunday?? (as much as he goes on, "Nothing beats a Sunday afternoon at **LEICHHARDT**. If Campbelltown can get its act together this year and get 17,000+ average, then we should move games out there, but until then, it just wouldn't be worth their while commercially

I agree its not enough but its a start.

As was mentioned, we now need to get people out to the traditional games to prove to the club that they can be profitable and sustainable.

As for Leichhardt being better than Cambo…. it has a longer tradition in first grade Rugby League than Campbelltown, but its a matter of opinion what is better.

I personally prefer Campbelltown because I have a longer association with the ground.

So what ground is better?

Lets just agree we have two of the best grounds in the competition :sign:

There was something that used to beat a sunday at leichhardt matty and that was sunday arvo at lidcombe if you wanted passion and soul those wests fans of the 70s in the fibro days left everyone for dead if you have the slightest doubt hop on you tube and enter wests vs souths 1976 and you will be converted. However my point is you get to love what you grow up on.Please dont use phil gould as an example as the guy gets nauseas any further west than balmain and he dribbles crap all day as he drives his rooster loving west hating agendas to nearly zero support frm the public. But yes sunday arvo at leicchardt is special still. :supporter: :supporter:

After these upgrades to Campo, they deserve more games there.

Look for the good of the team, we need to keep the West ours, and also increase games at traditional venues, where we can regain our home ground advantage
I would be more than happy with this split…
6 games @ Campbelltown Stadium
4 games @ Leichhardt Oval.
2 games @ SFS.

None, repeat, None never at SCG....stuff the history, the ground sucks for a place to watch footy.

It's 10 years on , and we have to start thinking the long time benefit to our great club, and if playing an imbalance of games upset Oldtime Balmain fans ( like myself), well bad luck.

I think if the club offer In the Menbers Application , the above game split, more would be happy than the currnt 2010 offer...I for one would , even though I live closer to the SFS and SCG than Campo

Yeah, I would be happy with that split. I was a Balmain supporter up until 1999, but can see the advantage of moving more games to Campbelltown. If the new ground improvements have increased the capacity to around 25,000, it would make more sense to play more games there (as long as the crowds turn up). The west has a far greater growth capacity than the Balmain area.

That sort of split would need to happen over time though. We need to get good crowds out to Campbelltown over the next few years to prove that it is the way to go. Having a capacity of 25,000 and a crowd of 15,000 is no different to having a capacity of 20,000 and a crowd of 15,000…

What I think is being forgotton here is there might not be enough support in Campbelltown to warrant more games at the ground.

How many times has the place been sold out in the last 10 years….is it one or none? So those extra 5000 seats are no going to make no difference what so ever.

If anything there should be more games at Leichhardt where the majority of Tigers supporters are.

Some may say this old chestnut being brought up again but it is always the macarthur faithful coming up with these suggestion which are not supported by facts.

The fact being that the Macarthur people need to show that they deserve more games and turn up.

I don't think we will ever see a 6/6 split until LO or Cambeltown can hold at least 30k. I don't mind playing games at the SFS at all, it's fantastic for viewing, and even if it's only half full (20k) it still creates a fantastic atmosphere. I can live with the split being 5/5/2 or even 4/4/4\. I just hope the games at Moore Park are not at the SCG.

I agree 200% with this, worst view ever, can't see from any position.

I would much rather play that game at the SFS.

Oh my god people, don't turn this into that Campbelltown VS Leichhardt rubbish!

Both Leichhardt Oval and Campbelltown Stadium are awsome for Rugby League and both would get crowds of over 20k against our traditional rivals if the weather is good.

We should keep the number of games at Leichhardt and Campbelltown equal, I don't care if the Campbelltown/Macarthur area is growing more rapidly than the Balmain/Leichhardt area. The joint venture needs to be kept 50/50 for it to work best and keep everyone (or most people) happy. A goal for the Wests Tigers should be to have half of the home games at Campbelltown and half at Leichhardt.

I understand that for financial reasons we had to play some games at other venues but it doesn't seem there was any plan to get all our home games back to our real home grounds. If there have been plans they certainly haven't told the fans. We must have the most loyal fans in Sydney. We have had a pretty good home ground crowd averages for years even though we have so many home grounds. Our fans have been very patient and loyal. I think the Wests Tigers need to come out and just be honest. If they do want to eventually move all home games back to Campbelltown Stadium and Leichhardt Oval then they should say how long it is going to take and why. If they are not planing to move all home games to Campbelltown Stadium and Leichhardt Oval in the future then they should be honest. I think the fans deserve this atleast.

Agree about SCG disagree about your Campbelltown/Leichhardt split. Like it or not it is still a joint venture and it's not like Campbelltown Stadium is Suncorp Stadium standard anyway.

He's right though. Taking the emotion out of it and what ground is better, the facts and figures do not support extra games at Campbo…...simple

I think the reality is, in the long term more games will need to be played at Campbelltown if the NRL is serious about securing the area as a Rugby League heart land.
