Failing to Build Pressure

Here are some interesting stats off nrl.com about the Tigers in 2012 so far:

POSSESSION: 16th. Stone-cold lowest in the NRL.

EFFECTIVE POSSESSION: Lowest in the NRL. (not sure how its calculated)

COMPLETED SETS: Just 139 and 2nd least amount in the NRL. We have only completed 1 set more than the Roosters who have least.

ERRORS: 76 errors. 6th most. I actually thought we would be higher.

MISSED TACKLES: 218\. 2nd highest amount in the NRL.

TACKLES BREAKS: 130\. Lowest in the NRL by a long way. 20 behind the 15th placed Titans and 100 less than the Sharks.

LINE BREAKS: 15 in 7 games. Equal last.

ALL RUN METRES: 6718\. Lowest in the NRL by a long way. 700 less than the 15th placed Warriors.

TACKLES MADE: 1933 and 5th most tackles made. Only 36 tackles off the most.

OFFLOADS: 52 offloads. 3rd fewest in the NRL.

My summation: No possession = putting pressure on our defence = tired when we eventually get the ball = ineffective attack.

IIf you listen to the past greats of the game like Sterling, Wally Lewis, Andrew Johns and now Lockyer, they are always harping on about building and applying constant pressure on your opponents and using that as a foundation for winning a football game. We aint building pressure and we aint winning games. By and large this isn’t just a 2012 problem. We’ve struggled with this in previous years too. Signs have been better the last 2 games, especially the notably tighter defence. Lets hope rd 7 marks the start of a tigers winning streak.

Some pretty darn poor stats there. Sure does remind me of '07-'09, our lack of cohesion attack put too much pressure on our defence. Which appears to stem from a lack of a half back.

How many line drop-outs do we force? I don't think we had any on Friday night and probably few all year thanks to our terrible short kicking game. Yet we always seem to have to deal with repeat sets.

Not very many. This is because we have the worst kicking game in the comp.

One of the biggest issues with our team is that we always try and score off everyplay and never try and build any pressure.

Look at the Souths match as a prime example. Scrum to us 10 meters out, 7min to go and Marshall puts Ryan over the sideline on tackle one. Any good team gets to the 5th and either takes the FG or tries to get a repeat set. But not us, we have to try and score points when we don't need them.

I don't know what everyone is complaining about , we are fantastic at building pressure

Now we just have to learn how to build pressure on the opposition instead of ourselves

With a continuing poor kicking game , sub standard defence , lack of yardage and bad discipline we will struggle to build pressure

yeah, it really pained me but Peter Wallace and the Broncs forcing those four sets in a row on our line, eventually resulting in a try despite our great defence.

I kept thinking 'we do that against Souths and we'd have the win on the board'.

X2
Lowest tackle breaks and highest missed tackles means we are missing the 2 simplest facets to Rugby League which I teach my kids..run hard and tackle hard.

Not very many. This is because **we have the worst kicking game in the comp**.

One of the biggest issues with our team is that **we always try and score off everyplay** and never try and build any pressure.

These are the two reasons we are going so bad this year.
We have a pitiful kicking game that lets the other team out of jail consistently and we put so much pressure on ourselves to score every tackle (see Marshall) that we force ourselves into errors that also let teams off the hook.

We need everyone in every position to be playing at their best. At this stage one step forward then two back. We keep getting glimpses of improvement and then bang we're hit with a sensationally inept piece of football that destroys everything we were just building to. There have been instances where Marshall's passing is as sharp as ever but then a center will miss a crucial tackle. Our forwards hitting it up and actually making ground but then Marshall's kick at the end of a rare good set is shocking. Our defence around the ruck will be tight and dominant for 5 tackles but then we go to sleep on the last and let the softest try in. Pressure ! The only pressure these guys are creating is on them selves and the pressure bubbling away in my veins. I have developed one of those pulsating veins in my forehead since the start of this season.
