Fans have right to ire over Cleary: Tigers

In light of the fact that this situation was none of our making and in actual fact I think we are in a more favourable leadership position heading into season 2019

I for one Im thinking I will just get over IC.

We are better off than when he got here and Im not gonna begrudge him for sucking up his pride (Gould Sacking) and going back to Penrith.

There's family, facilities and a Wad of cash for him.

Cant wait for Coach Maguire to get here.

With the dust settling I'm starting to feel the same. Real anger takes too much effort.

The pressure is really on them to win a comp… Not within the next five but two/three years imo... The way they go about things he won't be there if they haven't lifted a trophy by the end of '21

IMO, Maloney is the key to it happening. I know he was poor in their last match this season just gone but he is the one who makes it happen for them.

If they don't win one while Maloney is there, they probably won't at all.

Huge pressure on such a young side to aim up.

i have a little more respect for ivan, since he sent that text to the players, thought that was quite nice of him

Agree, very nice of him.

It's sort of like only twisting the knife in your back 5 times instead of six.

Rothfield describes the text as grovelling. His article is pretty spot on today.

Lost me with the written statement. The writing was on the wall then -in my mind. He was tempted by the offer that was too good to refuse and he struggled as our coach from then on.
Great outcome for us and not too fussed with what happens with the Clearys just glad we are free from it.

I know this would never happen, Maloney to wests tigers from 2019, sure would pull the rug out from underneath the panthers, and we would enjoy it very much.

Not really sure if it's good for Daddy to be coaching his boy at NRL level anyway. All players are accountable to the coach but, if the team goes badly, will Junior be treated the same as any other player? Could get awkward if claims of double standards, favouritism etc arise. (I heard Mummy's told Daddy not to yell at junior 😁)
Still, our Tigers got the better, proven coach IMHO so let them rot in hell for all I care.

Word is Penrith are contributing $400,000 to Maguire’s 2019 salary…...

I've heard it's a little more than that, but a positive outcome all the same.

Panthers coach Ivan Cleary slammed for Wests Tigers deceit

A WESTS Tigers legend has torn former coach Ivan Cleary to shreds over the real “carnage” he’s inflicted on his dumped club.

FORMER Wests Tigers coach Ivan Cleary’s underhanded move to Penrith has been scorched in an extraordinary bake from Tigers legend Benny Elias.
\
\
The Balmain legend said Cleary has inflicted “carnage” on the join venture club since he was appointed coach early in the 2017 NRL season.

Cleary oversaw the club’s dramatic recruitment and retention shake-up which resulted in fullback James Tedesco, playmaker Mitchell Moses and captain Aaron Woods leaving the club.

Elias says Cleary has blood on his hands for overseeing the dramatic overhaul and now walking away before fixing the problem he is accused of creating.

Officially released by the Wests Tigers on Sunday, Cleary is now free to return to Penrith on what is rumoured to be up to a five-year deal.

Penrith will reportedly finally announce Cleary’s signature on Monday afternoon.

Elias says it is “absolutely disgraceful” that Cleary has left the club to deal with a mess he created.

“Extremely disappointing. It’s a real frustrating time for the West Tigers fans I’ve got to say,” Elias told Macquarie Sports Radio’s Breakfast with Mark Levy and Mark Riddell.

“We thought we were going to start building a dynasty, that’s what he said. He was to have all the say in what was happening in the football world.
\
\
“In one stroke of a red pen he got rid of our three great juniors in Aaron Woods, Mitchell Moses and without doubt one of the greatest players in today’s game in Tedesco.

“They were the three people you build a side on, build a very good side on and unfortunately it was Ivan’s decision along with the board obviously to get rid of those three players because he had some scheme to make us a dynasty and 12 months later none of those players are there and he’s gone also.

“Rugby league fans have every right in the world to be angry at Ivan Cleary.

“There’s got to be compensation because what he’s done, he’s left carnage behind by getting out of his contract with two more years (remaining).”

“It’s absolutely disgraceful and not acceptable.

“All I want to say is shame on Ivan Cleary for what he’s done. There’s been no excuse and there’s been no reason for that.”

Cleary’s arrival will come after the Tigers and Panthers agreed to negotiate a release on the coach’s final two years of his deal at the joint venture.

Kiwis coach Michael Maguire was on Sunday then confirmed as his successor, allowing his return to the NRL after a season in the wilderness.

Tigers chief executive Justin Pascoe has also said Tigers fans are right to be angry at Cleary’s decision to walk away less than halfway through his contract.

“There are still two years left on his contract, so I think they’ve got every right,” Pascoe said.

“There was a long-term commitment from the club to him and from him to the club. We certainly looked for stability when we made that appointment.

“That was our focus 18 months ago when we appointed Ivan.

“Fans are passionate, they buy into messaging that is out there and fans buy into directions that clubs are taking and a big part of that is the coach.”

In a chaotic seven-day period, Manly have also announced Des Hasler as their new coach and South Sydney have lured Wayne Bennett on a two-year deal that begins in 2020.

The final piece of the puzzle is expected to be complete after Brisbane’s board meeting on Tuesday night, when Anthony Seibold will be officially confirmed as Bennett’s successor.

Back door is just angry because IC saw what a waste of space his nephew moses was.The rest of what he said is fairly right though

The only one of the three players anybody made a decision to "get rid of" was Mitchell Moses. The club bent over backwards to keep Tedesco and Woods. It's pretty obvious what's still burning at Benny…

Quite the embelishment to suggest Cleary got rid of Woods and Tedesco, but if it helps him grind his ax so be it. What i will say is that it was obvious from the get go that Ivan did not have the drawing power many were desperate to believe he had. Nada. Zilch. Losing those two was proof.

Who is Ivan Cleary?

Don't answer that, I don't really care.

He's somebody that we used to know….

Which lead me to write this (to the tune of Somebody that I Used to Know)

Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy that you'd signed
Told myself that you were on the bus
Thought you were glad to be away from Gus
But it’s a lie and it's an ache I still remember

As Tigers fans you‘re addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found out, we could not make sense
And then you weren’t clear in your press conference
I'll admit that I am glad it’s all over

But you didn't have to cut us off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And we don't even need your son
Cause in the Dally M’s Luke Brooks he nearly won
I'll admit that I am glad it’s all over

No, you didn't have to stoop so low
Send your text without addressing all the players
I guess that I don't need that though
At the awards night you were a poor no show
And now you're just somebody that we used to know

Now and then I think of how you screwed us over
Had us believing you would see out your contract
But I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
Now I think that you are really just a liar
The talk of buses and team was really just for show
But it’s a win for us because we signed Maguire
And now you're just somebody that we used to know

Apologies to the original artist - Gotye

A bit of deflection going on there for Benny especially with whats going on with Balmain atm.
Those with the biggest mouths are not necessarily the ones we want to listen to, yet Benny seems to have made a second career out of it. Embarrassing himself again and too thick skinned to care.

‘He’s tough but fair’: Tigers legends back Michael Maguire to finish the club’s rebuild

WESTS Tigers premiership winners Pat Richards and John Skandalis have backed new coach Michael Maguire to finish Ivan Cleary’s rebuild at the NRL club.

WESTS Tigers premiership winners Pat Richards and John Skandalis have backed new coach Michael Maguire to finish Ivan Cleary’s rebuild at the NRL club.

Maguire will take over as Tigers coach on a three-year deal after his appointment was confirmed on Sunday, with Cleary headed to Penrith on a long-term deal.

The former South Sydney mentor becomes the Tigers’ fifth coach in eight years, but the first to arrive with premiership-winning experience since Tim Sheens in 2003.

“I think his record speaks for itself,” Skandalis, who is now an assistant with the club’s NSW Cup side, said.

“He got a premiership in England as well with Wigan and came over to Souths and got a premiership there. He’s doing a great job with the Kiwis at the moment.

“His record is enough to say he’s a very good coach and good fit for the club.”

The Tigers haven’t played finals football since 2011, but last year had their second-best defensive season in the joint-venture’s history as they finished ninth.

“Ivan has left the club in a good spot as well,” Richards said while playing in the Battle of the Smashers charity cricket match with Skandalis on Sunday.

“Madge (Maguire) is not coming in to a side that is struggling, they played really well last year and I think Madge will really help them continue to grow.

“He’s great with the young guys coming through … He’ll be tough on them but he’s fair as well.”

Maguire will arrive at the club’s Concord headquarters when he returns from New Zealand’s tour of England next month, and will be there when senior players return for pre-season training on November 15.

He will be the only change to the club’s football staff, as the Tigers made clear throughout talks with both he and Bennett they wanted to keep their current department in place.

“We were very transparent and forthright through the process that we feel like we’ve got a really strong high performance and football department,” chief executive Justin Pascoe told AAP.

“We’re comfortable and confident in the program and I think you saw the improvement levels in strength and fitness and all the key attributes last year so that will just continue.”

This is the type of outcome you achieve when you keep things in-house and dont play things out in the media

I recall calls & demands for the club to inform & update fans, set the media straight etc etc

You dont play their game, you stay in control by only saying things when youre ready to say something, not when the media or public want you to.

Correct
