Farah and Potter in Pressers

It is interesting watching them in the press conferences. Robbie is a straight shooter on any subject. So the silence from him about Mick's future to me is interesting. There were a few times I thought he might jump in today and back up the coach and he didn't once. Farah was also gone out of his way to give Ricky Stuart a huge wrap when he has come under fire this season. I thought it would have been uplifting for Potter.

I don't think Robbie is pushing him out the door. I think he is pretty professional as a captain and would not do anything to upset the apple cart. However I reckon from his relative silence on the subject the past couple of seasons that maybe he does have some reservations about Potter.

It was interesting how he said in the press conference that he had been into Potter for a few months to pick Moses. So that is a fact, perhaps that Farah has been frustrated with some team selections.

I don't want to create something out of nothing. I just see it as interesting from a straight shooter like Farah that he has not come out and given 100% backing to the coach. Their relationship looks fine and professional if maybe a fraction cold in the pressers at least. Maybe that professional or cold/calculated distance between captain and coach is a good thing and is not that uncommon i don't know.

I have got this impression a little right from the start watching them in the media. I don't see a huge amount of mateship or bond. Maybe other people see it differently.

I've noticed similar things, and it seems as though potter's job is in far more jeopardy than last year.

my (crazy) theory is that we are after wayne bennett.

Broncos want to move on without him, start a new era.

The dragons are doing well with Mary and there'd be a lot of expectation/pressure if bennett went there.

wayne wants another premiership and a club like the tigers is probably his best bet since most other strong teams already have very good coaches/staff.

A lot of conspiracy theories if you ask me. Farah and Potter dont exhange xmas cards, but they both have a job to do, one is close to the best in the game at his job and the other is way better than people give him credit. I think its a pretty healthy situation when the coach is a little distant from the players.

I still think we will fall short of the mark this year, but next year and beyond under Potter and Farah will be good years

Yeah and thats fine. Get on with business and getting results. Certainly don't have to be best mates. Agree with all that.

You just dont see them like Bellamy/Cam Smith, Toovey/Lyon sort of sharing jokes or lavishing praise on one another.

Got to admit though it is nothing on the Stuart/Campese press conferences. Most of those you could cut the tension with a knife.

Its called Michael Hagan syndrome.

e.g having players in your squad who are that good they can influence a team more than your fairly ordinary coaching efforts. With a full side you are a gun. 2 players out and the side look like they don't want to even play.

Have a look at all those games that Newcastle won without Joey. Have a look at all the games we've won without Farah.

The proof of Potters pudding is how prepared, motivated and organized the team look when hit by injury, suspension or rep duty. He hasn't set the world on fire. Moses has been obviously been left out of the side for too long, Koro was given away at the worst time, and Austin should've ousted Anasta at 6 long before he got injured. You want your coach to be quick witted enough to pick up on these things.

My view is that we have the best young batch of youngsters the NRL has seen in a generation and they deserve the best coach going. Potter has to go a long way to make that obvious.

Sheens was past his use by date three years before we got rid of him, Potter has been here for 5 minutes FFS.

My two cents, Potter doesnt have it. But he is a really decent bloke who, despite being carved up in the media, has stayed classy. For that reason I am not going to bay for his blood.

I think Potter is actually a good coach but has not changed the side fast enough. Austin should have been the #6 a long time ago.

The players in the last 2 years seen to have all improved, especially the young players that to me is a sign of a good coach. look at Parra last year and the Raiders this year, there has not been anywhere near the same level of improvement of young players under one of the highest paid coaches in the game as our players under Mick.

The best coach is Bellamy and he is not going to come. Hasler and Toovey are highly thought of but I would not want either, Both have done well with a very good roster but Hasler for me has shown with lesser players at the Dogs that he has no attacking game plan. During the SOO period they hit it up with 5 forward runs every set and hardly looked like scoring a try.

Someone mentioned Wayne Bennett, yes he was a great coach, yes he would love the potential of the Tigers but for mine he has shown at the Knights he is no longer the supercoach. He always had fantastic players at the Raiders and Broncos that helps a lot. He took a over a very good roster at the Dragons and won a comp but he has hardly set the world on fire at the knights.

Hybird tiger is right we have the best bunch of NRL youngsters, probably the best bunch I have seen in my 30 plus years of watching Balmain/Wests Tigers. The only current coaches I would want is Bellamy and Ivan Cleary and we can't get either so I personally would stick with Mick for at least another season and bring in Brad Fitler (listen to him talk about tactics and back line play he has a lot to offer as a coach) at least part time to work with the halves/backs.

Thanks, recently married and been overseas so I have missed the last six weeks or so.

Look, I have some reservations about Potter (particularly his attacking plans) however I just honestly believe he has had a ridiculously tough slog since day one - given the injuries, the dysfunctional board/management etc. I think it's too early to judge him. I want to see him next season - especially if we manage to improve our strength and conditioning program and keep most players on the park.

IMO he deserves the chance to continue. With the exception of a few players, I think all his signings and cullings have been spot on, the young players seem to have responded to him (despite what's been written in the press), Farah's game has improved, and we have one of the strongest benches in the comp. I want to see him given a fair go and if he is given the chop now I don't believe that is fair.

Our improvement this year is obvious. We were never going to be able to maintain that intensity for the full season, especially against the stronger sides and during the rep period. So I would say we are well on track and our position on the table would be in line with expectations before the season started.

There was a great deal of criticism under Sheens that the players and coach were too close and that affected team selections. Now we ave a coach who holds a healthy distance from the playing group yet there is still criticism of team selections.

The board selected Potter to make these calls. He has a responsibility to not throw kids to the wolves too early and risk the problems we are seeing with Tedesco. We can have n opinion on when a player should be thrust into first grade, but the coach and the player are the ones who live or die by that decision and have to accept the reprocussions.

I am pretty comfortable with where we are at. We have had some disappointing losses, but we are playing with heart and it shows in our position on a congested ladder.

So at the start of the year most of the people on this forum agreed that if we finished any higher than 12th we'd over achieved. Now going into round 20 2 points off 4th place and people are still moaning about how potter has no idea.

Well for a guy with no idea he is sure getting some pretty good results.

As for the idea he should have picked Moses earlier, from what i have seen of Moses the last 18 months his biggest issues are defence and consistency. Lets wait another month and see where he is at. He hardly set the world on fire with his first 2 games.

I think Potter is doing a good job though he needed to toughen up and give Anasta the flick, Potter seems like a nice quiet guy and the media smash him for that.

I think you are reading into this too much. They actually shared a joke in the conference regarding the selection of Moses in first grade. I actually think that half season in State Cup is a key reason as to why Moses is confident and looks at home in first grade.

It worked for Brooks and it looks to have worked for Moses.

It has been many years since I have seen Farah have such a good season , his play is direct and is not over playing his hand, surely this must be the coaches influences . Some of the best bosses I have learnt and respected have never been to close to there staff and I took this into business myself …work is work with a little bit of celebration at times .
Farah is the captain and Potter is the coach there needs to be respect shown by both ,they don,t have to be mates , as some at the Tigers want a more matey relationship with there coach ,well that is the Titanic of Concord waiting to happen .
